I'd like to start by saying that I do not hate Fallout: New Vegas or any other Fallout game - Far from it. It seems like most games nowadays are generic war shooters, like Call of Duty and Medal of Honour, but the Fallout series is a much needed breath of fresh air.
I loved Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. I've spent hours on each one, exploring and listening to timeless classics on the radios (Lone Star being my favourite). I played Fallout 3 from start to 'finish', as well as all the DLCs, and I still go back to it regularly when I feel the need to squash Rad-Scorpions. Absolutely amazing game. Fallout: New Vegas was, in my opinion, even better than it's predecessor and fulfilled all of my expectations with no problems at all. Well, almost....
On the days leading up to release, I was hearing a lot of talk about bugs in New Vegas - Glitches that make something happen that shouldn't have. I knew there would be bugs, New Vegas is a huge game after all, so there were bound to be some bugs. For the majority of my time playing New Vegas, I didn't have a problem with bugs (The occasional glitched-up Rad-Scorpion corpse, but nothing too bad), but then, at the peak of my enjoyment, I was hit by an unholy Triforce of bugs.
These bugs didn't prevent me from playing the game - there were ways around them - but they seriously lowered my enjoyment.
The first was that 'Old Cowboy Hat' glitch, which some of you may know. After doing a debt collecting quest for the 'Atomic Wrangler' you're sent to kill a man on the strip. I go to kill him, take his hat as proof I killed him, then collect my money. Next time I try to enter the strip - the game freezes.
At first, I didn't know what to link this to. I had done quite a bit between finishing the quest and entering the strip again, so I returned to my most recent save file - one which was made after completing the quest. After redoing most of my hard work, I tried entering again and the game froze. I 'Googled' it and found the cause, and a way to prevent it.
If I were to wear an 'Old Cowboy Hat' while entering the strip (And keep wearing it throughout my time there), the game would not freeze. It solved my problem, but when my hat was too badly damaged I would have to find another 'Old Cowboy Hat' before being able to enter the strip again, which was annoying and made the game a lot less enjoyable.
Luckly, this problem was recently patched.
The second of my problems was the worst. My character had been pretty good throughout my time in the Mojave Wasteland, and when it came the time for me to choose a faction I chose to join the NCR. Turns out that wasn't an option.
The NCR Ambassador never appeared. Now where in the NCR Embassy - Not in either building, not in between buildings, and not just stuck behind a door somewhere which I didn't notice (I checked behind all doors - nothing). Because of this bug, I haven't finished the game - I worked hard to be accepted by NCR (fighting the temptation to steal everything they own) and I didn't want to end the game without fighting for them. So I didn't.
I checked recently and found that they still haven't patched this.
The third was the most common bug I found. Everyone I spoke to found the same bug, and agreed it was a major pain to deal with. I'm not talking about a glitch here - I'm talking about Cazadors.
These orange-winged butterflies and incredibly annoying, strong, and always come it groups. It took me two blasts from the Alien Blaster to kill one of them, and then I ran out of power cells. After that I just avoided the mountain areas, which is a shame because it limits my exploring.
I'm not expecting this to be 'patched' in any way. I'm not asking for them to be removed - I'm just kind of miffed they're so powerful.
Now, all of these problems I had with the game, although limiting what I could do, were still very minor. The song 'Lone Star' and the companion Veronica are worth these problems, and there's so much more the game offers. I just thinks it's a shame that I could be so happy playing and then hit with a problem like that. It's like giving a child a lollipop then taking it away.
Has anyone else encountered problems like these?
