Do you care about achievments/trophies?

Post » Sun Sep 18, 2011 6:13 pm

I used to be way into achievements. I would go out of my way to get them in WoW. Now, if it's one that I think might be fun, I'll go for it. Such as if it is actually an achievement that's unique or challenging. Ones that are just grindfests or timesinks or routine events get real old and I don't really care about those. The only games that come to mind now that I have all the achievements for are Mass Effect 2 and I think CoD 2.

I only go for achievements if I like a game and it isn't frustrating to play.

After you've played the game for a long time it's nice to know if there's still some things you haven't done and to go do them.

No. Most achivements are like "clear this part of the game". And aren't really achivements. The only achivements I care about are in the style of "Beat the game on hardest difficulty without taking damage under 1 hour" or something like that. Not that I really care about them either, it's just that they are the type to give braging rights.

I like them, they give you goals and things to keep the game fresh.

Nope. Couldn't care less about them. If I have to play a game over and over to get all the trophies so I can gain "the most" out of it for my dollar, then the developers didn't do their jobs. I find it especially annoying If you are giving me a trophy for opening a door that has to be opened to get to the end of a level regardless... that's nothing to brag about. They also break immersion for me. It's like having an annoying fifth grader doped up on Ritalin and Cheetos jumping on your lap while playing. "BLAMO! ZOMG!1!!!11!1 YOU JUST KILLED A MONSTER!!1!!11! LOLOLOZLZOZLZOZLOZ! I'M GONNA TELL ALL MY FRIENDS ON THE TWITTERS AN FACEBOOK ABOUT THIIIS!!11!!! LOLZLOLZLOZ!!!
Yeah. Did I mention I hate trophies?

I don't care for them much anymore I used to try and get every one though, but they're just a meaningless reward number to add to another meaningless number, unless showing off how much time you can waste is meaningful to you.

I care about achievements just because I want to do everything in the games that I buy. Most of the time achievements offer some kind of creativity to the game.

I enjoy them when they track a stat of some sort.

And then you achieve whatever it is and it stops tracking the stat :(

I enjoy achievement hunting, it's pretty much what I do to waste time/ challenge myself.

I don't like achievements either. When I think of getting achievements I see a twelve year old going to school and bragging about getting the head shot achievement on Call of Duty to his friends at lunch time. Then a huge bragging session breaks out about which kid has got this or that achievement.

I don't want to feel like a twelve year old. If I get one then great! If not. dang. I'm not going to go back through the game just to get it.

I really like getting them and depending on the game I'll actually actively try to get them. They add that extra bit of challenge to the game and you can tell when a developer embraces them. There are some games that only have achievements for finishing a level or when you complete an in-game challenge, these are the games where the developers didn't think the achievements were too important. If you beat RAAM in Gears 1 on hardcoe you get an achievement that unlocks him in multiplayer, in GTA 4 there are achievements for destroying 10 cars in under 10 seconds and rolling a car more then 5 times, but one of my favourite achievements is from Borderlands. In the Treacher's Landing area of Borderlands there is a mid-sized boat you can jump on, when you do you get the secret achievement "You're on a Boat!". Overall I think achievements are great additions to games.

I enjoy them. It's simply fun to have the game I'm playing point out, "hey, you just killed your 18th giant death spider. Awesome." It makes the moment in which you unlock the achievement stand out, and it also makes you reflect on the fun you're already having.

I absolutely do not go out of my way to get achievements.

I only really care about getting achievements if I've gone through the game once already and really liked it. Then I'll try to get all of them (or at least all I can). The one exception to that was Dragon Age 2. I hated that game, but after my first playthrough, I only had a handful of achievements left to get. So I forced myself to get the rest of them. Sakes alive, talk about a game with little to no replay ability.... :banghead:

I wish more games would give you unlocks for getting achievements, at least in older games you'd go through some massive convoluted process involving catching the fairy on the third stage, finding three chocobo feathers, then backtracking two levels (but only after completing second stage of the third secondary objective), until you reach a floating gemstone that would take you to a bonus world filled with halberd wielding cows, and once you reached the end of that you would find a merchant that would finally sell you your characters final weapon/spell (oh what, you don't have enough money? too bad, you can only reach this merchant once).

Now you do all that and you get a pop-up saying ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED - Too Much Time on Your Hands

That was the one thing in Mass Effect that had me completely sold on getting the whole trilogy. I still sport the "N7" gamer pic I unlocked by beating it on insanity. I wish they had put in more little perks into obtaining the achievements in ME2 though.

Depends on the game. I also DESPISE multiplayer-specific achievements. So what happens if you shut the servers down? Hmmmmm? You cut off a part of the game, albeit a small one, that's what! <_<
