Do you care about achievments/trophies?

Post » Sun Sep 18, 2011 10:54 pm

I have never understood the appeal of achievments in games.. I see so many people making topics about how to get x achievement.. its like theyre playing the game just for that. I honestly have never give a **** about them and never will.

lets say im playing DXHR... im totally immersed in my mission.. but I think hey I got to deviate and go and flush 10 toilets to get the toilet flush achivement.. not that that exists though Im sure the example is clear.

Some games give you an achievment just for doing part of the mainquest.. wtf is even the point? you were always going to do it anyway. Assassins creed is a prime example of this.. 'run up a building' achievment earned... well gee whizz lucky me <_<

If they actually unlocked something.. or you accumulated points to use as a discount on games then SURE.. id care. And some people like really beat themselfs up over not getting that one achievment, I feel like shaking them by the shoulders screaming 'wake up damnit'

It seems to be a generation thing to me.. I certainly didnt need a 'kraid defeated' achievment to enjoy super metroid. So yeah, achievments svck. -_-

Depends on the game.

In somewhat shallow action/platformer games? Or in simple Flash games? Or in games with long amounts of grinding, like WoW? Sure, it's something to aim for while doing other stuff. (Or the Badges on Kongregate - it's one more way to find games that might be worth playing).

In story heavy / RPG style games? Meh. Don't really get much out of them.

I don't mind them, I've never found them to be that big of a hindrance. I pay attention to them and will occasionally go out of my way to get one.

I mostly don't care, some achievements are a good challenge, like finding all the magicks in magicka etc.

Right now I feel that achievements were something fun to begin with. However they have become sullied and marred due to the gaming industry + moron 5 year old kiddies needing to display their "Prowess" as some would say. Found fun with some achievements and having them be extra little goals to accomplish however some turn out to be real..."headaches" to put it politely. So far the most difficult one i've seen is for Warhawk on the PS3 where you have to shoot another person with a sniper rifle while using a jet pack. There are also several others that are quite difficult if not near impossible to earn unless you are lucky or put a HUGE amount of time into it.

One achievement requires you to become a general which requires vast amounts of medals and i've only seen a few people that made it to general. Myself I think I made it to like Lieutenant or Captain forget which.

No not really.

But I do at least try some of the challenges the achievements suggest. I don't get the whole bragging thing.

Depends. If I like the game, I feel the need to 100% it, even if it means doing things I dont like in game e.g alpha protocol JJE.

Other times, that comnpletionist part of me makes the game more fun. If I didnt feel the need to go for everything in deus ex HR. I wouldnt have done a pacifist playthrough.
Even the JJE in AP showed me new content e.g Mina is a total [censored].

Most cases I dont care, only if I like the game do I feel the need to get everything. Or if I have most of them and need one or two (like DAO just romance alistair and zevran and get all endings).

Besides becuase of that we have achivement hunter. I watch for funny commentries, not guides.

Allthough I didntry hard in BFME2 to get some. They unlock heros I can use in skirmish mode.

Please put up a poll, and NO, I do not care about achievements. In fact, it annoys me that forum boards like Xbox Live shows your gamerscore, almost as if it is a sin to not have many achievements.

I generally don't care about achievements. In FO3 I never pursued them (I wasn't logged into GFWL), in FONV I didn't pay attention to them.

Portal was the first game where achievements were kind of cool, but then what I was really enjoyed were the challenge levels - the achievements were just a means to keeping track of my successes there. I'll admit I did pursue two achievements (really long jump, take out every possible camera) so I'd have 100%, but neither was terribly difficult and the latter gave me an excuse to play through the single player campaign again. :)

In TF2 some achievements feel like I've achieved something neat, but most are tracking . . . well normal things rather than displaying specific feats. Every now and then I'll do something really awesome and it will be capped off with an achievement, which is icing on the cake.

In fact, it annoys me that forum boards like Xbox Live shows your gamerscore, almost as if it is a sin to not have many achievements.

That would annoy me as well - although thankfully I don't hang out on any forums like that. The Escapist has forum-specific achievements, but most are just silly. The four I have displayed at the moment reveal that:

1. I have a beard
2. I got "Rust Monster" on a personality quiz
3. A post of mine was included in the Letters to the Editor once. While this might be something of an achievement, I didn't even realize they selected user posts for this, so it's not like I was working for it. :)
4. That I've posted in at least 10 different sections, hardly a difficult accomplishment.

I'm neutral, and I don't care about the way other people enjoy their games, if they want to go for achievements, more power to 'em. I guess they add just another layer of satisfaction. I think the argument that they are pointless is stupid, because it's a video game for pete's sake! It's already pretty pointless.

Some are fun to get if you look for an extra challenge. Like the non lethal playthrough of Deus Ex HR. Sure you can go through the game, say you didn't kill anyone, but it's nice to get an achievement for it. :D

Or like the Gnome Chompski achievement in Left4Dead 2, where you have to carry a garden gnome through an entire campaign. It's a weird funny extra challenge.

I don't care for actually getting 100% achievements on all games, or any kind of 'gamer score' if Steam had such a thing. And I definitely don't care about the 'finished the tutorial!' type of achievements that you always get by just playing the game, but I can see how they're a handy thing for developers because they can see what percentage of players makes it to certain points in the game.

This. I love trying to get as many Gears of War achievements I can. And I always loved the Fallout 3 ones, some of them had funny looking pictures. :P

Generally no, I don't care about achievements. They are a nice bonus (the 'ping' of achievement in the top right hand corner is always good to see) but I can live without them.

Having said that, I did go on an achievement hunting mission when I realised that after two Mass Effect 2 playthroughs I had gained 94%. Hmm, when so close it would be wrong to not make the effort to get the remaining 6%, or so I thought. So I then spent the next couple of evenings trying for the remaining five or six that I needed. Some were fine, just a bit of concentration and awareness of what I'm trying to do and it worked a treat. The last two were a nightmare and I didn't enjoy them at all. Especially the
Spoiler
collect all 6 data packets on Aite
mission.

On Fallout 3 I have 80%, and the remainder amounts to 'reach level X with good/neutral/evil' karma, and the entirety of Mothership Zeta. So, no I won't be chasing them down anytime soon.

For Fallout New Vegas I have around 48% after my first (and only) finished playthrough. Then a whole load of DLCs came out, which reduced it to about 38%.

Considering the only games I play are Bethesda or Obsidian games, I couldn't care less about achievements. Even if I played other types of games, at my age I'm beyond the need for bragging to my friends about achievements for something that doesn't amount to a hill of beans..

Don't understand the point behind them, don't get the obsession the public has for them, hate how Sony and Microsoft pretty much force developers to implement them into all of their games, and worst of all, view them as a cheap way for devs to add content and replay value to a game...without actually adding anything at all.

So yeah...I hate them.

It seems to be a generation thing to me..

Only in that it's recent generations of games that have internet access and "communities". Long before we had achievements there were high score lists and people loudly proclaiming their accomplishments in arcades.

Not really, except if I've run out of stuff to do in the game. Then achievements can provide interesting new things to strive for and make the game more exciting again.
