Do you ever bring a follower?

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 1:13 pm

I've noticed, I am level 58, had the game since it came out and have only brought one follower with me to fight for a little while... I have never used one ever since...

I am just curious, do you guys use Followers often or no?

After I finish the College of Winterhold quest I will bring one. But for now I am a lonely mage.

I bring marcurio along, although I usually get him to wait behind while I deal with enemies using my stealth, it's good to have a mage when [censored] goes down.

Occasionaly (mostly for RP), but without the "moveto player" command to keep them close to you when off-roading etc, it would be mostly painful.

Derkeethus as he's awesome and Anekke Crag-Jumper are the two I use the most. They're both pretty good at sneaking unlike the clunky housecarls you get. I know they're not all that useful sometimes but it adds another element to combat which I find to be fun. I need to be careful with my bow so I don't shoot them in the face and gives me an excuse to use Restoration spells more often (which takes forever to level).

My mage brings Erik the Slayer with her everywhere. She's a squishy mage, and most of the time he makes for a very good damage sponge. My usual strategy in tough battles now is to flank the enemy and get on with the killing while they're distracted trying to turn Erik into paste. He's been pretty good at not setting off traps in dungeons, too. Or if he does, he usually only hurts himself instead of me, which is appreciated. :P

(Plus, his "earnest, vaguely naive farmboy" character amuses the heck out of me most of the time. I always know to save my game in a dungeon and to prep for a boss fight when he blurts out with, "I don't think I like where this is going!")

Meeko will tag along sometimes too, but I never bring him into dungeons with me. He has a tendency to get in between me and my spell targets in enclosed spaces, which never ends well.

I do miss a lot of the options (like telling them to equip clothing or armor for RP purposes, or to use ranged vs. melee, etc.) and story/dialogue you'd get from companion mods in Morrowind or Oblivion, but...eh. I was anticipating that the vanilla game companions would be hollow shells compared to, say, Julan. I'm just happy I've found one I like enough to put up with hearing the same lines of dialogue repeated over and over.

Derkeethus is very useful, trust me. I use him all the time and half the time, I don't need to do much because of him.

The only companion i bring with me is Meeko, and that's mostly because of a mod that makes him essential, otherwise I wouldn't bother. Companions in Skyrim really aren't worth the trouble of going out of your way to protect.

Derkeethus is the only follower that is essential. You can use him on vanilla Skyrim. I would love to get Meeko as an essential Dog but you can't have both a Dog and a Humanoid... Bethesda should make it so, if you ask me.

I have Lydia tagging along pretty much all the time.

In Fallout and FNV, apart from Dogmeat, I rarely had any followers.

Bingo! She is great! One of the few that doesn't run up your ass when you stop. Or constantly barks to no end. But usually it's two Dead Thrall Female Bandit Chiefs.

I always bring the Dark Brotherhood Initiate (The female one) with my Argonian archer. This is because she can't be killed, and has high skill points in Sneak, One Handed, Archery, and Light Armor. I either use her for distractions when I'm trying to snipe some guy or to help out when I'm fighting close range.

Haven't ru n into Derkeethus yet, if I do, I may have to git it a shot.

With the power of mods multiple followers can be possible, sadly though, that is currently only available to pc users. (blame Sony and Microshaft for that)

Whenever I need extra firepower I use Sanguine Rose or summon Lucien Lachance. Or a plain Atronach.

I've been trying out this one that lets you have up to 10 followers. So far I only had three at most but the mod has been working out quite well. http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1345602-wiprel-multiple-followers/.

Ive pretty much never used followers except when it is required in any bethesda game. They always seem to just get in the way, and i am usually able to deal with any enemies on my own.

I did once and ended up shouting him off a cliff. Now, I just use my handy-dandy "Summon Dremora/Atronarch" spells. Better than a companion, if I might say so. And I might.

My meleee warrior used two. The first one was a mage. It seemed to me that after most of my fights my warrior sported a friendly-fire icicle in the head. Later I tried another melee warrior who also used archery. If I could get him to use archery it was fine but too often he would rush in with his sword. At that point I had to be careful to not not hit my follower. For me, that becomes tedious after awhile.

On the plus side, I like having some companionship on my adventures and there's a nice roleplaying aspect as well. On the debit side is gameplay. They can kill you or you can kill them unintentionally and trying to prevent either of those scenarios can be a pain in the neck.

I most adventure solo these days. Though I'm sure I will try a follower again in the future.

Derkeethus, my follower, got into a fight with one of my Dremora Lords and actually did an End-Kill on the Dremora.
