Do you keep up with Technology

Post » Thu Sep 15, 2011 5:03 pm

Just wandering if there is anyone out there like me who likes to do things the old fashion way ie Talk to people, No texting, buying 500-600 dollar ipad ipod that you dont need, No Facebook cause i have friends in the real world...well maybe not but you get my point. It amazes me when i look over to someone anyone in a public area like a park, you know just to hang out and people watch they are all playing with a ipad or there phone. Maybe it stimes from me being raised in the country far away from city life and playing outside all day every day when i was younger.

Nah, can't say I keep up with it. I also absoluterly hate how things like applying for school (at least here) has to be done through the net.

Having the registration online is great. I was waiting for a spot to open up for Latin, I check from home when I get in at 2 in the morning and I see a few empty spots, click register and I'm in the course. I couldn't imagine having to go to the university, stand in line and wait for an appointment to talk to someone just so they can check if there is a opening for me or not.

My cellphone can't even browse the internet, so I don't keep up with technology in that sense. I'm up-to-date with computer technology though, I just don't care about that overpriced portable stuff.

I try my best to avoid getting swept up into all these tech fad. I do not have a facebook account, hopefully never will. I only have a basic phone that can make calls and text and I have a dedicated $30 music player. I only get things I need. I do not like having to rely on technology so much.

Could you image what would happen to 1st world countries if somehow all the electronic devices in the world just stopped functioning and would not come back on?

1. I talk to people

2. I text (whenever possible when work related as it is simpler than telling someone 5 times what to do before they are finished doing an operation -- no offense coworkers, you're just not used to doing certain things, it's not your fault :P)

3. I'd never own an Apple device, but am interested in the Asus Transformer/Slider and Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.8

4. I don't have facebook, but do have G+ and Twitter (the latter quickly becoming an extremely valuable news and research tool for me)

I also spend a good few hours a day reading tech/infosys/sysadmin/hacker news. I also spend a good amount of time testing out things

Oh yeah? Now I'm looking for a job, and I have to register my e-mail, account number and birth number (both on the bank card) along with more personal information, which will be stored on a server. I don't like that, relying on the internet to store my personal information, information which can be easily stolen, information that can be useful for indentity theft if somebody feels like that.

I want a god damned application form in the mail! Not bits and bytes...

I do both. I don't use electronics when I'm hanging out with people unless I need to settle a bet with someone present or something. I keep up with technology, partially because it's a big part of my job and partially because I love software and gadgets. I don't keep up with social internet fads, but that is NOT the same thing as "keeping up with technology."

Cell phones barely work in my area as well as being devoid of reasonably priced broadband options but does just getting an http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003922SEW count?

I'm so old-school I go back before the existence of language, and just don't talk to anyone ever, over any medium.

I stay abriast of things I'm interested in and that apply to what I want to do. Digital audio recording, and having enough specs to run the latest Bethesda game on the PC.
Twitter and Facebook and Ipads, Kindles and all manner of hand held devices are out of my realm. All I want is a cell phone minus all the bells and whistles, THAT WONT DROP CALLS! (apparently non-existent), with no texting (which it does, but I don't use) or other wonders.

I'm happy to work with my 19th century word processing technology that fills my garage. Hand set printing type, and cast iron letterpresses with all the accoutrements. I'm all about that technology....and the smell of fresh printer's ink on freshly printed paper...you have no idea.

I have never owned a apple device and just don't understand this whole gadget fad. i have not had a Facebook page and so on. i am only on this forum because i wanted to gripe about FNV to the developer myself so i figured why not participated a little but this is the first time i have been on forums. Its not that i dislike tech its just for me 90% of it is totally useless.

Computer wise, yes. I just bought a new laptop at the beginning of the summer. However, phone wise, no; I still have my Motorola RAZR. :P

I'll have to agree with you about having to submit applications on the internet. I went down to a few retail and grocery places in town, with a resume, and they told me to go home and fill out the application online. You'd think the fact that I showed up in person, with my resume that I show a little more initiative then facelessly submitting one online.

As for other technology, I'm not really all that up to date. I have a cell phone, none of the current smart phones or anything. I don't text much at all, and rarely use it. It doubles as my house phone as well. After a while if disliking facebook I got an account because it really helps to keep track of friends. Especially when we all now live on opposite sides of the country, or some of them even over in Europe now. That said, I don't understand the constant need to update via status and all that crap.

Technology has its uses, but also has become WAY too ingrained in peoples lives now.

And before the Internet there was (and still is) the phone system which was so incredibly easy to steal information from using social engineering it wasn't (and still isn't, sadly) even funny

Ever since getting a smart phone, I realize how attached I actually am to the online world. Its an odd feeling, knowing the information of the world is at the tips of my fingers, any time, any place. It's practically become a separate part of my brain, I don't bother to remember phone numbers, addresses, hell I rely so much on my navigation app I don't know if I could leave my home town without it. If there were ever to be a technological apocalypse, I'd probably be one of the first to die  . I don't know how I would function without such basic things like google and wikipedia. (How would I ever find out all the answer to my mundane questions without these magnificent tools? An encyclopedia? What's that?)

I only get the technology that I need and fits me. A PC for work and games (which I upgrade only when the need arises), one console for games that aren't on the PC or that my PC can't handle (I'm very selective and cautious about games), a very cheap cellphone (call and text). High-speed internet with just enough speed for efficient internet browsing (FF), downloads and low cost. Cheap but good quality headset for times when the outside world demands silence (university).

I have no MP3-player. (Why would I listen to music on the bus/train when I can sleep or study?)
I have no i[Insert product]. (I absolutely detest Apple *stabs Apple voodoo doll*)
I have no laptops/tablets. (Desktop for life)
My PC speakers haven't been upgraded since before the turn of the millenium. (See no need to, since they still work and perform to my expectations.)
My monitor from the early noughties was upgraded only because it broke down. (And bought a cheap higher-res LCD monitor)
I have a digital tuner but only because the government decided to scrap the anolog network. (So no extra channels)
I do enjoy the luxury of whitegoods as long as they're cheap and efficient.

Apart from that, I'm centralizing my media center (spatial reasons) and upgrading the PC (work and gaming reasons) once I move to a new apartment.

The internet to me, is a source of entertainment and knowledge. But trusting it to store fragile information is as dumb and dangerous as walking blindly on a shooting range. It's bound to go wrong sooner ot later.

Don't remember who said it and how it exactly went, but it was something like "Assume that anything made for all will be taken advantage of and abused". I think it was that, or something bearing a similiar or the exact same meaning.

I tend to keep up with what tech is out there and read quite a few tech news sites on a daily basis. However, as a result of this I tend not to become enamored with much of the new tech that comes out, and in terms of the actual things I buy I tend to keep things pretty simple. Basically, because I've kept up on the progression of technology and what's available, I tend to view all new tech as simply tools that could potentially be used to do the things I actually want to do- sometimes those new tools offer an easier or more efficient way of doing things, while many other times they just add an unnecessary level of complication, or offer only a marginal improvements for a very hefty price tag.

In short, I'm perfectly capable of texting kids to tell them to get off my lawn, but just find it much simpler and more satisfying to yell at them out the window.

I do keep up but I don't buy things. The ipad for example, I know what it does and how it works, even used one but I don't own one. I don't feel the need to buy a gadget I don't need.
