You know what I never understood?...

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 3:19 am

I never got how almost all dungeons have a bunch of candles and lights scattered throughout them. I mean, aren't these things supposed to be old, abandoned crypts? Then why are there a million lit candles in the very bottom of every cave and dungeon. Just wondering, it just seemed a little unrealistic.

The corpses walking around fit the lore, but never ending candles don't. Unless magic was involved...

In a world of talking dogs, cat men, and dragons a few lights in a cave is unrealistic ? .

Because, Oblivion. Seriously, all dungeons in that game were beyond ridiculously dark and lacking in ambient light. Was great when you were trying to sneak. Enemy can't see you...but you can't see them either.

Also, magic. There's an enternal burning candle in Windhelm...so they're all eternal burning candles and torches (except the ones you get <_<) in skyrim.

As I recall someone talked about the Drauger lighting them, as it was described in a in game book.
But I need verification on this.

I'm pretty sure, and now I'm no expert, but this maaaay just be where gameplay > realism. I'm not sure how pitch black dungeons would work out.

Also I do believe that if a fort is full of bandits or ghosts or draugr that they would most likely have lights around.

I'm guessing they're there for the convenience of 360 / PS3 users who sit on the couch playing the game a mile away from their TV screen.

It's a shame really, as it kills the atmosphere completely.

There's also fresh fruit.

The Draugr may be dead, but that doesn't mean they don't go to the grocery store like everyone else.
Did I say grocery store? I meant THE GENERAL GOODS STORE. I WORK THERE FOR BELETHOR.

Draugr are supposed to care for their dead masters, so they probably light the candles so they can see. and the candles could be enchanted
edit: yes, the book is "amongst the draugr". some researcher discovered how to get along without them seeing him/her as a threat

You know it would be wonderful that those candles are only stupid thing in this game!

But unfortunately that's not the case.

It's not just the candles. You'll find fresh food, books written in the last 50 years, weapons that never changed design, etc, etc.

Honestly, the dungeons are far, far too bright. I was one of those guys who even thought most of the dungeons in Oblivion were too bright and played with mods like Real Lights and Darker Dungeons. Similar stuff was in the works for PC players of Skyrim, but I don't know the status because it's been months since I've been in the mod forum.

Having dark dungeons adds more depth to the game. Torches and night eye mean something. Of course some of the dungeons are inhabited and should be brighter, or at least have bright sections. Others have daylight or magic sources keeping them bright.

I never found this book in Skyrim, and I made it a point to read every book I came across at least once (in the case of 2920, or The Real Barenziah, several times), and I can't seem to recall this one.
