do you travel on horse or foot?

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 1:43 am

For the first 100 hours or so, I used the horse. Went through two of em. I prefer it, it looks cool, seems faster and is more enjoyable for me to explore. The issue is combat, how horses behave around combat is just to irritating to tolerate for me anymore.

Always on foot.

I find horses too slow to be of any benefit, and I find it MUCH easier to navigate difficult terrain on foot. Horses also wander off when you dismount which is annoying. I also don't like them charging into combat.

The one exception was an old friend...
Spoiler
Shadowmere
who I used for a bit for nostalgia, but then I gave up and went back to on foot.

I run, or if I've been there before I fast travel. I will also use carriages to get to a city the first time.

I really don't worry too much about missing anything because the game does a pretty good job to send you somewhere you've never been before when doing quests. Even using the rules I listed here I have been all over Skyrim.

If a horse could carry loot they would have at least one plus, but since they don't they are totally useless.
Spoiler
I tried to use Shadowmere after I got it and it died very soon by running off a
20 foot drop. I figured if that was supposed to be the best horse,
and I can't even keep it alive, then there really isn't any point in having a
horse at all.

Also this. If something looks like a reasonable distance to run (<15 minute run straight as the crow flies, with no interruptions) I'll go on foot, and often stop to check out anything along the way that looks interesting, or just to get the map marker. Trouble with that is I don't know if it's going to be a leisurely walk along a path, or an impossible nightmare of mountains and sheer cliffs.

I'll almost always fast travel if I have a spot nearby my destination.

Horses are too much of a pain in the keester. So, foot for me. I got a horse forced on me doing some quests..... and I didn't really care for it. The controls svck, no mounted combat, no mounted dialog, and everything in the third cousin must think horsemeat is a delicacy...... as they ALL try and kill the horse. Also, horses are flat out stupid.... Dragon lands? Every horse in the stable comes out to fight....... WRONG. Horses are PREY, if the big lizard lands (PREDATOR!!) the horses should RUN the opposite direction.... Even a war horse wouldn't take on a dragon single handed. (single hooved??)

Hey guys, i have a little question... Hasnt got much to do with this, but its a real problem to me and i need help...
The problem is, that im an asassin khajit, and i use 3rd person view ALOT! Just because it looks cool and you can look around a corner. The problem is, since ive become a werewolf (companion quest) my 3rd person view is extremely zoomed in. When i havent got a weapon drawn, i cant see the whole upperbody of my character, and its so for on the left, and zoomed in i can barely see anything. Before i became a werewolf i didnt had this problem. But, does it go normal again when i do the quest where you have to kill the witches and cut their head of and you cant turn into a werewolf anymore, or is this a never ending bug/mode or something like that?

Are you on a console? If so press the right stick in an hold it. You can then zoom in and out with the left stick.

I usually avoid horses in these games. The tactical limitations do not outweigh the tactical advantages.

what tactical advantage?

Only thing they're good for is quickly crossing untraversed terrain (may as well fast travel otherwise) or hauling a surplus of loot back.

I ride them time to time for the hell of it... and I'll just gallop past most encounters (wolves, mudcrabs, maybe bears) and only stop to pick up rarities like ninroot. I mostly travel by foot... using fast travel to avoid covering the same ground before it's had a chance to regrow flowers/herbs

I just can't stand being the only person in Skyrim who rides a horse :/ unless this is a glitch in just my game.. I've seen one other person using a horse and he was a random hunter trotting between Ivarstead and Helgen. I find using a horse almost ruins the role playing efforts...

Yeah, you're right, there should be more horses. Legionaries patrolling the road on horseback, even farmers leading a horse would be cool to see.

100% on foot. I tried a horse a couple of times and wasn't too impressed.

Now, if we could fight from horseback, that would be different.

I travel on foot mostly. My horse is untrustworthy, frequently walks off and sometimes gets killed in the most stupidest of ways (he once walked off a cliff).
His nickname is "Graqefruit" by the way. And I dislike having to be a baby sitter or re-load for that idiot. So I will only use him for climbing up mountains.

I tried caring for a horse 3 times. But they are all suicidal it seems. So now I go on foot or steal one if guards are giving chase. I much prefer to travel by werewolf now.

I travel on horse using Frost. I try to dismount well before I would get into combat. The time it takes to do this is a lot less than the time it would take to walk everywhere. Also, I'm pretty sure my horse can go up steeper cliffs than my character, which helps exploring.

Travelling on foot is so much better in so many ways in my opinion, it feels better to explore on foot and there are too many limitations on horses.

I do like that with horses you can basically walk up a shear cliff face though, pretty entertaining.

On horse, it must be my 3rd horse... may them rest in peace.

But when I'm really in overweight that i'm not even able to get back to my horse... I transform into werewolf form and run to my horse, and wait for 1 hour to transform back to human... and I take my horse to go the town, and sell all the junk I got in dungeon.

Foot or fast travel. After my first couple of journeys on a horse I decided that something that I couldn't fight from, or wandered off while I was doing whatever I was doing at the destination, was next to useless.
