357 hand loads don't modify damage to gun, plus 357 doesn't come in an AP variant anyway.

.357 JHP modifiers: Damage x 1.25, DT - 3, weapon spread x.80. So it hits harder than a normal round, penetrates armor better than a normal round, and is even more accurate than a normal round.

.44 magnum SWC modifiers: Damage x1.2, DT - 6. So it hits a bit harder and penatrates armor significantly better. Again, no downside. .44 mag also has no standard AP version.

.45-70 Gov't hand load rounds have the same advantages as the .44 mag, but does do more damage to the gun. But at the repair required to make those you can fix your gun with just a couple repair kits.

You might be right about 10mm, but I don't use those in any guns anyway.

I play cowboy style too and I must say,in my experience hand loaded ammo is better and degrades weapons LESS across the board... Cowboy perk + Trail Carbine + .44 mag SWC is the shizzle, my fizzle!

PS
Maybe Frankie is thinking of surplus ammo?

I hotkey all my primary weapons as sniper rifles:
Left: Modified/Silenced Sniper
Right: Ratslayer
Down: Modified 9mm
Upper Left: Frag grenades
Upper Right: Dynamite
I also keep a modified Cowboy repeater and Service rifle as back ups.

I hotkey my armor in the lower left and right slots:
Lower Left: Wasteland doctor fatigues/ Ranger grey hat/ Authority glasses
( I look like a frosty rockstar...lol)
Lower Right: Combat armor Reinforced Mk II

Nope... I could be wrong on which handloaded ammo, and the actual stats, but pretty much all the types were comparable to the AP or HP real versions, and the one's I checked seemed like lesser versions of the genuine store bought ones.

I can't say for sure about weapon degrading either, but I have the built to destroy perk, only shoot hand loads and have no problem maintaining my weapons.

As far as advantages/disadvantages go, I use hand load .308 and .44 mag swc...

.308 hand load is a compromise between HP and normal rounds (same DT specs + 50% more damage), and from experience, I can say they work great on deathclaws.

I don't know specs on .44 mag swc, but from experience they do good damage against armored foes... (there's no AP version of the .44 mag)

I really wish someone could produce definitive specs...

EDIT:
according to the wiki 45-70 gov't swc hand loads do DAM x 1.20, DT -6.00, so specs for .44 mag swc are probably similar.

Sorry, I don't understand your question. My gun skill is 90. My character is a sniper. I keep those four weapons around because they're light (all four only weigh 16.5 lbs), and they cover all ranges well. Ratslayer for long range sniping of weaker or normalish targets, Sniper Rifle for long range hard targets, All American for general use when I can't snipe effectively, and the 10mm for nuisance control and as a holdout weapon. I'm playing hardcoe, and I'm not using followers, so I have to pay attention to how much I carry. I wear the Armored Vault suit most of the time, because ideally my enemies will die before they get too close, and I like the way it looks. I keep the 34 Security Armor around for when I need more protection. 16 DR, but only 100 health so it wears out quickly, but it's super cheap to repair. I don't put it on alot, but it's nice to have when I need it.

if I were a traveller on the highway I'd be rather put out to say the least to see a heavily-armed man watching me through the scope of a sniper rifle. Wouldn't make me inclined to stop and say hello.

I laughed at this for a while XD
I changed out my Q-35 Modulator and YCS/86 for Pew-Pew and AER14 Prototype.
And I sold my Assault Carbine for a 12.7mm SMG with silencer.
Spoiler
I just miss turning invisible by crouching with my stealth suit. :cryvaultboy:

[off-topicness] But anyhow... I'm still extremely surprised about how my second character played out! Just a tid bit of information [/off-topicness]

Level 11, just got the game a few days ago :D

Hunting Rifle+Scope+Hidden = Dead unless they got good armor.
Cowboy Repeater packs quite a punch once fully repaired, choice number 2.
Caravan Shotgun for indoors hopefully find an upgrade soon. Two shot reload is not ideal in "OH SH!T" situations.
Last but not least is my Service Rifle, I'll have this on my back while running from spot to spot in the waste, 20 round clip and decent stopping power make it ideal for the lil guys i run across.

As for armor, I just recently fought through a swarm of Cazadors to get a Combat Armor, Reinforced MK II and helmet. Tough as nails but well worth the fight. I'll probably not wear the helmet, the ranger hat and authority glasses look just too damn cool to replace :)

-One small caliber pistol or SMG.
-One carbine or light rifle for mid-range combat.
-One sniper rifle, model depending on the prey.
-One or two shotguns for alley sweeping.
-A couple mixed grendades, never know who you need to frag, EMP, or incinerate.
-A grenade launcher or flame weapon for those really dirty jobs.
-A melee or unarmed weapon for the quiet touch.
-Advanced Combat Armor or Reinforced Leather Armor, depending on the job or what my looting haul will be.
-A combat helmet for head protection.

That's how I roll.
