2012

We should make t-shirts. On the front says "I survived the apocalypse", on the back a list of all the apocalypses we have had so far in chronological order

This is genius.
A bunch of people will commit suicide, then nothing will happen; and we will all laugh.

You get that uncomfortable tingling in the back of you're neck that tells you that you're going to hell for reading my posts? That means you're still human, hold onto that.

This is what think too.

Considering I don't believe in mysticism and psychic clairvoyance and all that dross, I don't believe the Mayan thing is any more than the end of the calender, or so I've read. I don't believe aligned numerical dates cause the pandora box to open. I believe the world as we know it will end in nuclear war, but we all have our own 'end of the world' beliefs Im sure.

At least one person actually did this before the Large Hadron Collider was activated, because the stupid sensationalist media had to go on about how it could create a black hole and svck up the earth or something along those lines.

I fully expect some people to do it again. And for a lot of people to feel very very silly on December 22th.
I don't see what our world loses if some nutjobs end their days in such an act of lunacy. And before you start pointing fingers yes I have lost people to suicide.
Though the person you referred to was, I think, a 12 year old Indian girl so I think that was just plain unfortunate. When I think of a hysteria-induced suicide I think of some badly educated drug addict loony who due to his condition believes such nonsense.

I dont understand those who would or have commited suicide due to some doomsday theory.

If turns out to be real, your probably gonna die anyway. Slight chance of survival depending on what happens. And if nothing happens, your gonna survive.
But if you commit suicide *before* anything happens, Thats a guaranteed death.

Just seems a bit common sense that you should wait and see.

Just for clarification, I'm not asking if it will happen, I don't believe in it. I'm asking what you think people that do believe in it will be doing that day.

Some people just can't deal with any additional stress and anxiety, no matter how nonsensical it might seem to the rest of us. When a person's in that much of a bad place, the most unexpected things can be the final straw. It's really rather sad.

I would rather kill myself than be burnt alive or crushed/drowned or whatever.

If that was indeed the case, I doubt you would've made such a cheap shot. But well done, you've got your reaction.

Most of the world uses dd-mm-yy or (yy)yy-mm-dd; the US's unique format is often a little confusing to the rest of us...

But thats my point. It might not happen.

Id rather any of them than kill myself for no reason.

Edit- But sure, if its definetly gonna happen and there is no doubt your about to die horribly, i might join you then. But only if we're absolutly sure :P

I did explain a likely reason a few posts back: it's not necessarily the likelihood of impeding unpleasantness (or lack thereof) but that it's just adding to an already intolerable level of anxiety and uncertainty in such individuals. The media have a lot to answer for...

Well,suppose thats true.
No doubt the media would/will go into a frenzy on the lead up to the next date.

Edit-Thought they had already started earlier actually, I seen a headline on news Website. "European leaders warn of a Grim 2012"
Turns out they meant recession :P

Definitely going to be end of the world parties, you can guarantee that.

Probably a bit of hysteria, given how much of the media spotlight has shown on this doomsday prophecy. It'll be interesting to see what happens, because whether or not you believe it in you certainly know about it, and you'll be thinking about it as the date comes closer (not to mention the media will be all over it). I expect the crazy folks to be out and about, so some [censored] could go down.

Of course, any sort of disaster, natural or not, leading up to the date is just going to increase the buzz tenfold.

I just wrote a poem from this girl I like. You can say I was a secret admirer, making himself known in a very large way and on the what I consider to be a perfect day to do so. So while I had a crappy ass 2011, and no doubt an equally [censored] 2012, I made someone's new year a blast.

I imagine a number of people will suicide. I don't know if most of the world is taking it seriously, but I don't believe it will happen.

Haha well if it DID happen the commiting suicide is just dumb. I mean, if you're gonna die anyway, you might as well sit back and enjoy the show!

And that way is not confusing?

You say the date as December 21st, 2012, so why not write it mm-dd-yy?

I don't say that: I say "the 21st of December, 2012" (edit: as Pokoyo already said, had I read further down!) But it's not just that, people generally expect things like numbers to be in ascending or descending order of magnitude, or at least I do.
