So... about the game footage

Post » Wed Apr 17, 2013 9:28 am

My theory is that ZOS, in an effort to keep download size reasonable for Beta testers, have not included all the high res textures with the Beta Client.

As others have said, those who played the game at PAX reported just how good the game looked.

Shh... You can't try to make sense into these guys.
You know, it's clearly just like they say it is. They know it all and the game is doomed.

ZOS really does need to release a PAX build or better 5-10 minute demo of pure gameplay from the same starting section perhaps running on a proper, decent rig on ultra... that'll shut up the internetz hate.

The hate is, unfortunately, starting to feel quite depressing/worrying.

Easily fixed, just show the real goods off, even if it's just a tiny taste to settle the 'rumbling stomach'.

I will admit that their unwillingness to release any official gameplay footage is disheartening.

Do any companies do this during closed, private beta? That doesn't make sense to me. If they were ready to show, it would be an open, public beta.

I guess letting people play the game at PAX wasn't good enough?

i don`t understand these ppl who say that they R disappointed about the game cuz it looks bad!
i mean the game is still in beta and STILL it looks much better that many famous MMOs. i mean it`s an MMORPG and not a freaking single player games. the graphics don`t need to be perfect it`s actually the game play that has to be fun!
it`s too bad that online pre-purches at gamerstop is not available in y region or i would have pre-ordered it :(
i absolutely loved the combat and and atmosphere. it really reminded me of SP TES games..just what i wanted!

Agreed. I would like to see at least some gameplay footage.
For me, not releasing footage means that gameplay svcks so bad that they are afraid for people to see it.
I have to say I am kinda of scared.

I would be more worried if it was polished and done. They would be less likely to make changes at that point. They seem to be doing beta the way you're supposed to, with prototypes that can change. But now future games are going to treat betas like free trial weekend, maybe test server load but never be able to make any meaningful art or gameplay changes because they'll be too afraid of leaking unfinished work. This is why we can't have nice things.

Extremely disappointed, looks horrible. Textures look like Morrowind, animations are stiff and choppy as hell. Faces and expressions from character creation look like KotOR 1. UI and the whole feel is so generic. All in all, looks like something the cat spew out 10 years ago. EDIT: and just to remember that its budget could have fed an African nation.
you know anything about Beta's? they dont have High res textures in during beta and limit the grapjics settings usallly around beta 3 or 4 they give more options but high res packs usally dont happen until open. have been in 3 of the last AAA mmo's and all did the same thing except fof SWTOR they seem to have forgotten to put the high res texture packs in 18 onths after launch lol

The models were way better than vanilla Morrowinds. The animations were clunky, but a) it's a mmorpg, B) it's a TES game.

I didn't have any real problems with the video, the graphics didn't really stand out as bad to me but I've never been that concerned with graphics. Could hardly tell if it were worse than in any of the promotional footage.

One things that stood out as bad to me was the bad lip movement while talking to NPC. Didn't like the look of the UI and how stamina was drained in chunks rather than smoothly, but there will be UI mods so I'm not worried too much. But overall I'm excited for the game whenever it is released.

As others have said, those who played the game at PAX reported just how good the game looked.

Also, the Beta participants are supposed to be testing specific things when they test. If I am testing certain quests in the starting area do I really need the highest quality graphics to make sure the quest is not somehow broken?

Lastly, remember this is not a preview. It is very early Beta.

1. It's beta, I dont know how many times that has to be repeated.

2. Animations are the ONLY real issue with the game at this point, and there has been enough posting about that to ensure at least someone at ZOS knows about it. We can only hope they fix those animations, just as they changed so many other parts about the game after hearing player feedback.

3. KOTOR 1 had no character customization, you picked preset faces, now stop trolling.

4. The UI is supposed to be as minimalist as possible. Unfortunately there are certain aspects to an MMO that require UI elements - namely a chat box, minimap/radar, and hotbar. You'll never get away from those.

5. African nations could feed themselves if they werent so busy spreading aids and shooting each other. Hurricane Katrina destroyed New Orleans, Hurricane Ike similarly destroyed Galveston - difference is that Galveston was completely rebuilt in 2 weeks and new orleans is still a sewer, I'll give you three guesses why.

For me, not releasing gameplay footage means that it isn't finished, and they don't want people to start reading into and over-reacting to something that isn't final.

Look what people are already doing with the leaked footage; OMG EVERYTHING SUXXORS AND THE GAME TOTALLY TANKS. Even though no one but the devs know what version that beta tester had, and what they were testing with it. And all the heavens and deities forbid some item/system/aspect of the game is in the beta version, and they can't get it to work correctly, and they scrap it from the game. More OMG THE DEVS LIED AND ALL LIFE IN THIS SECTOR OF THE GALAXY IS RUINED FOR 50 GAZILLION YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! rants.

I'm still hoping that they don't release anything until it is finished. Then people can either play it or decide their time would be better spent elsewhere.

In my experience developers that show off real gameplay footage tend to have more confidence in their product. I'm not saying this is the case with ESO....it just has me concerned i guess.

I had no problem with the vid to a certain extent but stop saying it was on the lowest setting because it wasn't, not that i actually agree with most of what the OP said

Custom Settings
Res 1920x1080
Sub Sampling Normal
View Distance High
Texture Res High
Shadows Ultra
Particle Density High

Those are not the lowest settings but you have to remember that it's not the final build.

There will always be people who see 5 minutes of footage of a game in BETA, on youtube, playing on low settings, and instantly bash the game and say it is going to fail. People put way too much stock into graphics these days. Personally, I thought it looked promising. Granted, we didn't see that much really, and the guy playing was an idiot. I still play DAoC and that has graphics from like 2003. WoW still looks like a pathetic cartoon. Graphics are not really top notch when it comes to MMO's. People have stated that ESO on ultra will look just as good as Skyrim. That's good enough for me. Also, things like graphics, character animations, and UI can all get polished before the game actually releases. What is more important to me is fixing things like bugs, class balancing, PvP, end-game content, quest glitches, making questing organic, making combat feel "weighted", etc. All the things that make the game enjoyable. Graphics are cool for the first couple days, but then it comes down to gameplay. If the classes are all broke or there is some combination that is way OP (and trust me, people will figure it out within a couple months) then all the PvP will suffer.

There are two things I noticed in the video that I didn't really care for:

1) that awful highlighting of enemies to help you see which enemy you're targeting. I really hope that can be adjusted in the settings when the game releases. I would rather not even have it, but I know a lot of people will want it.

2) The whole revive right where you died seems pretty lame. I hope this is just something that can be down at really low levels, something that is just in beta, or something that has a very long cooldown. An xp debt is not really an acceptable penalty in my opinion. You will just make up the lost xp in a few minutes probably. Maybe I am just old school or what not but games need to have some sort of penalty in them. Some things should be some what challenging in a game, especially an MMORPG.

That seemed to be the only option window the player didn't scroll down to show all of the options. I wonder why...
