Even though i agree that peoples reaction can be over the top i can't agree with the highlighted yellow. MMO's don't work that way i'm afraid, you can release in game footage even if some things might change, take ArcheAge as an example.
Are we saying that gamer's in the west are to immature to understand the difference or beta.
Sometimes it's better to not have an NDA and let the supporters grow with the development as it progresses. WOW had no NDA for the beta and open forums for anyone to read but not comment if you were not in the beta.
XLGames have let us watch ArcheAge from CBT1 with nothing hidden, once the beta is over they go to work in fixing what needs to be fix and then they continue with the next beta.
I am sensible enough to know that it's early days but being up front with your product get you a lot of respect in the mmo world.
Just looking at the posts here, I'd venture to say people [east, west, north, or south] don't see that "beta = not yet finished". All of the "animation is clunky", "textures svck", stuff is sort of proof they aren't equating "finished/polished" and "unfinished/rough/beta".
Personal opinion incoming: Just because you can release information/footage, doesn't mean you should, or that people will remember that it is BETA if you do. I remember the OMG MOUNTED COMBAT IS IN OBLIVION posts when a screenshot of a beta build with a mounted character had a drawn sword. The devs were, apparently, trying to get mounted combat into the game, but they couldn't make it work the way they wanted, and they scrapped it. People started rants about why they lied about mounted combat, based on that one beta build screenshot, when they found out there was no mounted combat in Oblivion, regardless of whether the *devs* had actually announced it or not. When one of the trailers came out for Skyrim people started speculating about horses based on a look at a saddled horse tethered outside a building. People did not like it when I pointed out that Morrowind had saddle guars even though they couldn't be ridden, and there was no official information yet about riding horses.
I also have a feeling that some posters, if they could see everything "transparently", would be even more upset and rant-inclined if they see their favorite idea/weapon/armor/magic whatever isn't in the game. Or they did include it, but didn't implement it the way the poster wanted, for whatever reason.
