Absolutely Disappointing.

I don't think you need steam after activating it, though I could be wrong. give it a chance! The game is fantastic, only minor flaws distract from it.

When I started installing Skyrim I read the Bethesda QA and it says you only need to be logged in to Steam to register your copy and after that you don't need to log in while you play.

Correct. Just make your own desktop icon that points straight to the TESV.exe. No more Steam, LEGITIMATELY!!! (No 3rd party work around that is frowned upon.) The launcher needs Steam running but the game exe itself does not.

P.S.
The launcher needs Steam running but the game exe itself does not.

Meaning change what needs changing, close Steam then run the game exe from your icon

Steam is like mandatory ADWARE (Spam). After closing the game; I get screen after screen of ads.

I have it in offline mode. The game still won't start without the malware.

Skyrim isn't multiplayer - no need for steam really. Get a diff DRM

Like wolfpup said, if you change the path the desktop icon takes you can avoid steam.

Read the post right above yours. It's only mandatory to activate the game.

When you take a look at the rest of the industry, Skyrim is a gaming masterpiece. Even ignoring the state of the games industry, it's still a freaking masterpiece.

Sadly, this media saturated world engenders a short-attention span and quick frustration times amongst less discerning consumers, who have something of a sense of entitlement towards instant gratification for little effort.

Bethesda also gives PC users the ability to literally edit anything in the game they want... and people complain...

I am a dedicated PC gamer and I hate console ports, but the Skyrim UI isn't that difficult to get used to. It may be slightly fiddly at first but after ten minutes I was used to it.

Seriously, people shouldn't be letting tiny things like the UI ruin the game for them. I mean seriously - the UI? Gameplay, character controls and graphics are far more important, and these are exceptional in my opinion.

You're right, off course. Skyrim has all the appearences of being one of the best games ever. Many people have obviously done tremendous work in fabricating this game. More's the pity that the annoyance at the unwieldy interface for PC could heve been so easily avoided. No PC gamer would have complained about an interface very much like Fallout or Oblivion.

It's a minor part of the game in terms of programming, but it can ruin your game.

ROFL... Yes thank for giving us the opportunity to fix and tweak things Bethesda should have done before releasing the PC version of this game.

Let's praise them saving money releasing an unfinished "half-assed" crock of [censored] "console port" they call a PC UI... We the community will fix it, and they will count their money.

Thank you Bethesda.

nevermind the UI. what about the bad graphics? just in casae Bethesda has no idea what good graphics are, here is an example:

I have to say, based on the general reaction to the game, the reviews, my experience so far... If you don't like it thats not the games problem sorry.

You said yourself though the story, combat and gameplay are great, it's just other technical stuff that's getting in the way. Hope you get it sorted as this is worth enjoying.

Nope. It has to remain installed, you just don't have to run it. A fair compromise I think.

 Kind of surprising the "Polish Oblivion" sequel moved up so much in the world while the actually Oblivion sequel kind of mess up where the UI is concerned (playing Two Worlds II right now).

You do realize it doesn't matter if you buy their game or not? They've already gotten the money for it. The only thing you are supporting by buying a physical copy of a game, is your local game store. Not the game developers.

No .ini file edits needed for me.
Laggy mouse acceleration?
Clunky interface?
You didn't know Steam was required to play? Did a lot of research on this game, didn't you? BTW, Steam is an awesome program. BEST SALES EVER!
Bethesda will not miss you.

Yeah until they go bust or enough hardware alterations happen.
Then youre expensive legally bought product is junk.

Proof?
Try getting blank tapes for betamax, still the best and most indestructable recording system out there.

Try redeeming the code that comes with the game for fable 2 "now with free code!" proudly on the box.

Shoot man, rely on outside sources and youll always end up with the short stick.
Fact of life.

The only thing disappointing for me is that Bethesda still thinks it must be a good idea to have the mouse accel while in menus. WHY IS THAT STILL HERE? People have complained about it since FO3. It's just dumb. That, and Khajiit tails act like half stiff noodles (SPAGHETTI NOODLES [because you know minds will be in the gutter unless I clarify]).

I am extremely disappointed with Skyrim. I went and bought the hard copy, not being a fan of digital downloads. Tried to install it, and it requires steam. This is a bad enough. I need Steam to run in the background to play Skyrim. Why is this necessary? My computer isn't the best, and running Skyrim isn't the easiest for it, so I have to run this spyware CRAP in the background too? Apparently this was done with Fallout as well, but I didn't play them so I was unaware of this idiocy.

So I start playing the game, and the interface is just plain clunky. The lack of options in game annoys me to no end. I shouldn't have to hap-hazardly edit an INI file to make the game playable. Not even so much as a way to turn off the laggy mouse acceleration in game. Really Bethesda?

On the plus side, I don't get the complaints about graphics. I think they're gorgeous. Story is great and combat is enjoyable.

In the end though, I think this is where the relationship between Bethesda and my wallet ends. Truth be told, if Massachusetts hadn't made laws against returning software after purchase, I'd have brought this back to the store already and gotten my money back. An unfinished PC game isn't worth $60.

The purchase may be final but don't worry Bethesda, I promise it will be the last.

Steam is actually pretty good thing to happen.

And i absolutely agree with the horrible UI. Everything is after so many windows and amount of button pushes.
GFX are bit better than oblivion even with the ini tweaks. However some of the textures are totally horrible and recycled in many places. However i can blame consoles dragging behind in the GFX power for that GFX being average.

Combat is a bit better than oblivion. Story is okay and looks better than at least oblivions one. Sad to see the map is actually smaller and the removal of stats etc,
