Adoption is nice, but why not make our own babies ?

Post » Wed Aug 29, 2012 2:23 am

you sir are right but speaking of khajits i hope you can marry khajit males/female

You're right. I do feel that the game badly needs a Khajiit who can be a potential spouse. And maybe some adoptable Khajiit kittens as well.

Actually not sure how many adoptable kids there will be. I know that there is at least one new one, since the trailer had an adoptable child named Lucia, and there is no Lucia in Skyrim (she even looks like of like Lucia the Lamplighter... a homage to Fallout 3, maybe). Not sure if the kids from Honorhall will be available or not, but I hope they are.

I can think of several reasons.

1. Equality. Bethesda has done their best to allow same-gender couples the same rights as opposite-gender ones. Homosixual couples would not be able to produce children.
2. Interfertility. Neither would marriages in which one of the people was Argonian or Khajiit, and possibly orc as well.
3. Genetics. They would have to have a mechanic for determining the physical appearance and capabilities of any number of combinations, from Nord-Altmer to Breton-Bosmer.
4. Mechanics. They would have to create an infant growth mechanic: infant to toddler to small child to... et cetera.
5. Logistics. How is an 8-1/2 months pregnant female Dragonborn going to climb mountains, battle dragons, and flatten bandits?

1) I hate it when real world ethics and costumes become hurdles for enjoying a game experience. But if you think about it,it's like saying the game shouldn't allow you to hunt deers and bears because people shouldn't kill animals in real life.
2) They could make some new character models perhaps ?
3) Well the kids would be kids, their physical appearance would be the one of the new character models, based on who's the parents of the kid.
4) Hm. Perhaps it could involve a quest where something happens (Sheogorath played with time again) and you get some years fast forward or something.

5) Again, this could be addressed with just a screen telling you "9 months later..." after you decided to make a child.

Yeah, that's totally not a reason they haven't considered it. That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Yes, that's Racial Phylogeny, I remember that. None recorded yet, which means it's not actually discounted.

I guess, but not even a lusty argonian maid would like to polish a barbed spear. I doubt many people would line up to test if it's possible.

You mean in-game months ?
I wouldn't have a problem. But it could be made so it doesn't need to take 9 months.

Why would you ever want to add another horrifying looking, unkillable monster to Skyrim?

Haha not.
But is there any piece of in-game book that states that in the game's world pregnancy takes 9 months ?
Anyway, the game could just show you a black screen with large letters telling you "9 months later..." after you push the confirmation button on the birth option.

Bretons: They are a race of both human and elven ancestry.

In Oblivion there was that Orc gladiator.

I said from the beginning that natural reproduction was just too complicated in a game like Skyrim, for the reasons I already stated. My opinion has not changed.

I look forward to the day when Heathfire hits the PS3, and I can reach the next level of cozy domesticity: a home I build with my own hands in the snowy woods, a roaring fire with dinner cooking over it, my beloved spouse at my side, my housecarl at my back, my cherished child playing with my loyal dog Meeko at my feet, and my personal bard in the corner, playing Ragnar the Red. Epic to the maximum.

The race would according to lore be the mother's, so no hybrids - but there still must be a baby for each race.

But my main reason not to like the idea is what others already stated - you have to wait nine months for the baby to be born, which isn't very fun for the female PC. And it doesn't end there, you know - it takes several years before a child isn't totally dependent on her parents - mostly the mother. Not very fun for the female PC. Or maybe we could get an armored baby sling so we could carry the baby with us when we go draugr-hunting?

But ok, let's do it with realism. Giving birth has historically been (and still is, in some parts of the world) probably the most dangerous thing a woman can do. So make sure to stack up with healing potions and spells before it's time to deliver the baby, unless you (or the wife, for male PC's) won't die in the process! And then get that armored sling on and go adventuring. Every hour, you'd be forced into "baby conversation", when baby wants to feed, get a new diaper or just wants to be entertained. Even in the middle of fights. Oh, and monsters, bandits and beast can of course kill your baby, so you must defend the little one as well as yourself. Or, you could leave the baby at home, which wouldn't be a problem for males, but females would need to hire a wetnurse. Or, in worst case, a goat, which probably would mean your baby is dead next time you come home.

Ok, I was being sarcastic when I first started writing this, but I've change my mind - babies could be fun, but only with a hardcoe, realistic mode.

Cos some people play as a male and marry a male and some people play as a female and marry a female. So adoption means that it can include every player choise.

I wish so. I'm not big on the reproduction ideas, too complicated, but if we can adopt, it would be nice to be able to adopt non-human children.

I can only think of one game that included childbirth and that was FO:3.

As a woman with grown children I'd just as soon skip having labor pains in my games. :P

I'm now picturing a tired Dragonborn back home after a backbreaking trip into a barrow, yelling at the child WHAT THE HELL YOU DIDN'T DO YOUR HOMEWORK and unintentionally shouting the house to the ground.
