Albums of the Year 2011

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 4:10 pm

Which of their previous albums does it most resemble?

It's definitely quite a bit like Appeal to Reason, but it has some throwback to Suffer & The Witness and Siren Song of the Counter Culture to a lesser extent. I feel it was actually a bit better of an album than Appeal to Reason though.

I didn't even know they had a new album out :o, I'll have to get that asap
I haven't looked into much new music this year, the only things that come to mind are the new children of bodom album which wasn't as good as people said it was and RHCPs new album which was also pretty disappointing.

It came out during Summer, definitely check it out when you get a chance!

I've loved:
* Black Veil Brides - Set The World On Fire
* Hollywood Undead - American Tragedy

I've been disappointed in:
* Lights - Siberia
* Blue October - Any Man In America

This year's been pretty rubbish for music I have to say (American Tragedy is [censored] amazing though). Was very upset with my disappointed list :( Last year was better.

Aww, I really like Any Man In America. I can't stop listening to it, which surprised me because I was not pleased with Approaching Normal at all.

I also really liked Neighborhoods by Blink 182. :P

EDIT:
Wasting Light by Foo Fighters
Going Out In Style by Dropkick Murphys
Bastion OST (really awesome)

ENOUGH OF THE GENRE WARS ALREADY

:stare:

Good to know that the Anna Calvi album was good - I've had that on my wishlist for a while.

Worst :
"Lulu" by Metallica/Lou Reed

You just spoke negatively of something involving Lou Reed.......my soul hurts now.

I just went and listened to it, and am not surprised that Metallica fans hate it. It doesn't feel like a Lou Reed project either. Its combining Lou Reed's emphasis on emotion in the music, and Metallica's melodic riffs (which I usually find very boring), so they kind of rub against one another at first, but if you listen to the entire album in one sitting, just meditating on it, it really is an amazing experience.

'Course most people who like Metallica don't listen to music for artistic merit, so its understandable that they hate this.

OT: These two that Princess Stomper mentioned: Wasting Light by Foo Fighters
Going Out In Style by Dropkick Murphys

I've enjoyed a lot of the 2011 albums I've bought this year.

Really? It pales in comparison to Those Who Tell the Truth... and How Strange, Innocence in my opinion.

Anyone have any thoughts on Mogwai's hardcoe Will Never Die, But You Will? Haven't gotten around to it yet.

"Shorthand review: This is the indulgent sound of the angst of millionaires. ... At this point (eighth song in, halfway through CD2), my attention span was completely extinguished. “Tell me what it is you want … tell me what it is you want!” For the torment to be over, Lou. ... There were times when I thought: “Hey, I should put some music on”. Before I realized that I did have music on and I had committed to going the distance with it. UGH. ... Some people should have their license for being famous revoked. Too many legacy-tarnishing missteps equal a forced retirement, plain and simple. These are the same dudes that wrote ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’ and ‘Hit The Lights’, hell even ‘Sad But True’? Along with the dude who was in the band that did ‘Venus In Furs’, ‘Waiting For My Man’ and even ‘Walk On The Wild Side’? It’s a cavalcade of indulgence and half-formed ideas. Why wasn’t anybody around to tell them “NO”? ... “For worship of someone who actively despises you,” sings Lou in ‘The View’. Yeah, sorry guys don’t give yourself too much credit; the best I can muster for this is second-hand embarrassment." - Conan Neutron, Collapse Board (The review is brilliantly-written, but has swearing hence not linking)

'Course most people who like Metallica don't listen to music for artistic merit, so its understandable that they hate this.

Well, that's because they haven't done anything with artistic merit since The Black Album!

Eh? I didn't mention those. Must have me confused with someone else. :)

Well, Death Magnetic was revolutionary in a way. It's like the white flag of the Loudness War :hehe:

Very good choice with American Tragedy friend.

And the mentioned Rise Against and Five Finger Death Punch albums were also worthy of some attention.

Anyone have any thoughts on Mogwai's hardcoe Will Never Die, But You Will? Haven't gotten around to it yet.

I really enjoy Take Care, Take Care, Take Care... Maybe because I try to be open minded when I listen to something, and so when I listen to the album, I'm not comparing it to their past works, I'm just taking it for what it is. Also, I happen the feel like the album is just simple and happy -- Explosions are just enjoying life and making music is what it sounds like to me.

As for hardcoe... I also really enjoy this one. I hear a lot of criticism on the electronics on this album (most people saying they would have preferred another guitar rather than keys), but I think it gives it a certain vibe which I like. Also, some of the pieces boarder on drone (along the lines of Earth) which is pretty cool. Be sure and check out the final track on the CD version (it's not on the vinyl), Music for a Forgotten Future. It's a piece Mogwai, apparently, wrote for some art exhibition, and it's pretty nice.

Ooops, you are correct. That would be Mr.Wood Elf.

But yeah, being someone who can't sit through most Metallica songs (not because its too 'hardcoe', or because I only like soft music, I am just not a fan of music made by musicians for musicians, they are just far too technical for me) I was surprised by this, sure, its not great, but I don't think its terrible either. Also note that I enjoyed some of Metallica's early work.

THAT being said, I do LOVE me some Megadeath. Why? Because I can feel something behind that music, the person writing these songs is emotionally invested in them. This isn't to say that I enjoy any song that evokes emotion (would rather eat my own spleen than be forced to sit through a Morrisey or The Smiths song) but that it has to have some psychological value or it just feels dry and arbitrary to me.

In no order whatsoever, due to me being an indecisive tit.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvJrwvFS-84 What nu-metal should sound like. Also manages to mix dub and metal while still having the great pump-up songs that they do so well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0E6Bpoetzgs Visceral, punkish, aggressive and strangely catchy, and also uses the Entombed guitar sound, Darker Handcraft is possible the best thing they've ever done, as the linked track, Every Walk a Quarantine and Slumcult and Gather adequately demonstrate.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCBT6Xf_AGA&feature=related - Easily my stoner/sludge album of the year, this album flows majestically, and manages to sound forlorn while avoiding sounding completely depressing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vNBeoPOZls - Much more conventional, straight forward (and dare I say it, commerical) than their other albums, The Hunter is still a absolute stormer of an album, and could see them getting even bigger in the future.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0sg6UrQjC4 While not being as good as their last album, Plains of the Purple Buffalo is still a beautiful piece of art, its uplifting, souring nature seems to give me a feeling of weightlessness at times.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pgv6dKV03dA Probably the closest thing I've got to an 'album of the year', Helplessness Blues is flawless from start to finish.

Don't misinterpret my comparison to the earlier albums. I'm not one of those people who thinks that every album after the first few is bad, but I do compare them. It's another way of saying, "in a given month, I'll listen to album X twice as much as album Y". That the two I prefer were the first two are coincidence. I do listen with an open mind, but some albums are more pleasing than others.

Mogwai, however, have been so consistent, so I'm not surprised their last is a good one. I don't mind their keyboard work on other albums, in fact I think its a highlight. I'll pick this album up next time I'm in the store.

Yeah, I mean I definitely don't think it's their best. I'd love to hear more "Six Days at the Bottom of the Ocean," but that song's already written, so I just kind of try to take new material for what it is. I do enjoy the sound on the album though -- it's just kind of simple, straight to the point and happy sounding.

Hah, are you a Beirut fan? Definitely my favorite band. :D

Of course, Beirut is awesome.

Really? It pales in comparison to Those Who Tell the Truth... and How Strange, Innocence in my opinion.

I like all their work. Take Care, Take Care, Take Care may not be their best but that doesn't mean it's bad nor does it stop me from enjoying it.

[censored] Up - David Comes To Life
Dropkick Murphys - Going Out In Style

They're the only two I can think of right now. Anticipating albums from Sonic Boom Six and The Skints some time soon, but that might be into next year now.

EDIT: Regarding "worst" albums, I can't really comment since if I don't like, I don't listen. In terms of disappointments though, I felt pretty let down by Taking Back Sunday's new album. I was expecting good things, since they'd returned with the same line-up from Tell All Your Friends. That said, TAYF was an exceptional album, and not something they could easily beat.

The thing that early Metallica and Megadeth have in common is Dave Mustaine. You're probably connecting specifically with his songwriting. I'm not sure what to think of the new Megadeth album, though - I thought it sounded like it was cobbled together and that's exactly what it turned out to be - a contract-fulfiller where they just polished up some outtakes from previous albums. It has its moments, but is disappointing compared to previous albums. Still, at least it's better than Metallica's 'Lulu'!

The Smiths at least did 'How Soon Is Now' - you have to at least credit them that much. Not one of my favourite bands, though.

Definitely, along with Kvelertak. Pitch perfect live as well, if anyone has the chance to see them live, do it.

Oh, Sleeper - Children of Fire

I was about to say "blimey, are they still going?" until I realised the "oh" was probably part of the band name! I take it they're not Louise Wener's indie band...

Nope they are a metalcore band that's only a few years old.
