Albums of the Year 2011

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 3:55 pm

I know I'm a bit early, but given it's November and I only have 2 albums this year left to look forward to, it's probably about time to start this thread. What are your picks for the album of the year so far? Personally, Taake's Noregs Vaapen has been my favourite, although Primordial's Redemption at the Puritan's Hand is excellent; Goatmoon's Varjot is very good too.

Of course, feel free to mention any albums that disappointed you, too. Everyone knows Morbid Angel's latest is an absolute stinker, and I'm not too fond of Ulver's Wars of the Roses either. I'm also still eagerly awaiting Leviathan's new one (with a name that's probably censored) and I've just ordered Giant Squid's Cenotes, which came out last week.

So, Best (and of course worst) albums of the year so far - and ones you're still looking forward to.

I've found that most albums from musicians I like this year have had a few brilliant songs and then the rest are pretty mediocre, like with Nero's Welcome Reality and Justice's Audio, Video, Disco. Hopefully next year will be better, with (maybe) Deadmau5's artist album, and surely Daft Punk must be going to release something soon.

Not a whole lot this year. These are the only 2 albums I got this year:

Blackfield - Welcome to my DNA
Steven Wilson - Grace for Drowning

Wilson has been busy.

My music expansion has been slowing down recently, I need to find new bands. :P

Oh yeah I forgot. I don't listen to a whole lot of game music but the http://supergiantgames.bandcamp.com/album/bastion-original-soundtrack is awesome.

I'm surprised I have so little music from 2011. I've been mostly catching up on all the decades of music I've missed.

I really liked http://www.allmusic.com/album/helplessness-blues-r2136980 by the Fleet Foxes. The (mostly solo) group AWOLNATION is new, and their http://www.allmusic.com/album/megalithic-symphony-r2137186 is a fun listen.

I was sort of disappointed by http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-king-of-limbs-r2147056 for a few reasons. It's not bad by any means, but it had no strong stand-out tracks and was much too short. It pales in comparison to their older stuff.

Apparently I've mostly listened to new indie rock albums. The new ones by Iron & Wine, Bon Iver, and The Decemberists aren't all that special. Bon Iver irked me at first but it's grown on me. The others I haven't listened to again. From memory Iron & Wine's album was pretty good, but apparently not good enough to make me listen again.

^ povuholo, how is Grace for Drowning?

Andrew Jackson Jihad - Knife Man

The Antlers - Burst Apart

Dumbo Gets Mad - Elephants at the Door

Tyler, The Creator - Goblin

Those are my favorite albums from this year, maybe even the only albums from this year that I have, I can quite remember...

EDIT: Also the Bon Iver s/t.

Pretty good! Some King Crimson influences, which is no surprise considering he has been busy re-mixing their albums... While also working on that Blackfield album and his solo album. And god knows if he's doing anything with Porcupine Tree at the moment. A very busy man.

I also saw him live in Paradiso here in The Netherlands last week, it was great.

I can't name a single album released this year. I also can't name one released last year. The most recent music I've listened to this week was released in 1824. I r not kool

Mastodon's The Hunter. It's not as heavy as their other albums, but it's still pretty damn amazing. There's also:

Machine Head - Unto the Locust
Psychostick - Space Vampires vs Zombie Dinosaurs in 3D

Not looking forward to anything else, I don't think Lamb of God's new album comes out until next year.

Favourite album this year would have to be Scurrilous by Protest The Hero. Runner up would be Neighborhoods by Blink 182.

Only album left that I'm still looking forward to is Rise Against's new album. I know it's already out, I just haven't gotten around to getting/listening to it yet.

I've only bought two but I like them quite a bit.

From Chaos To Eternity by Rhapsody of Fire

and

The Beginning of Times by Amorphis

There are other albums I got this year that I like more, but they weren't released this year.

The only album I bought this year was Explosions In the Sky's Take Care, Take Care, Take Care and I wasn't very impressed. It is a little bit of a disappointment, because I haven't found any good post-rock lately, and EITS first two albums were pretty good.

Definitely Ladytron's "Gravity The Seducer" for me. It's their usual late '70s-style anologue vibe but with a hefty dose of what sounds like fellow retro-ists Stereolab mixed in, too. Great stuff. Still can't get used to the bloody awful band name, though... :shakehead:

I haven't been able to pursue new music as much as I would have liked (mostly being due to a lack of time for anything, really), but the top couple of picks so far (and that I can remember off the top of my head):

Braids - Native Speaker
Bon Iver - Bon Iver
Wolves in the Throne Room - Celestial Lineage
Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues

the only music i bought was the new five finger death punch album. Thought that most of it was pretty good, the title song american capitalist was pretty cool, and so was over and under it. Not my favorite album of theres but still pretty good

I've barely been following music this year sadly.

and I'm not too fond of Ulver's Wars of the Roses either.

I think I listened to that once or twice, thought it was decent, but never listened to it again.. I should have learned from Shadows that it might take time to uncover it's awesomeness.. That or it really is a step down. I can't remember

I'm also still eagerly awaiting Leviathan's new one (with a name that's probably censored)

This is basically all I've been waiting for. Very excited :celebration:

I also need to give the new Oranssi Pazuzu a proper listen. And those albums you mentioned. I like your taste. :foodndrink:

Many good albums this year..... if I were to pick the best, it'd be between Negative Plane - Stained Glass Revelations, and Mitochondrion - Parasignosis.

But many other excellent releases from Aosoth, Vader, Throneum, Pestilential Shadows, Sabbat...
