Ammunition Types

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:54 am

Primary: simple ammo you find everywhere, nothing special
FMJ: Ammo that will go through several walls and enemies before stopping, extra damage. Somewhat rare and expensive
Hollow Point: Increased damage ammo. Scarce but fair price
Incendiary: Ammo thats sets enemies on fire. Rare but expensive
Explosive: Ammo that knocks enemies directly over and will do damage if the round hits near them. Scarce but expensive
Buckshot:(Shotguns only)Increased damage ammo. Common but expensive( dont hit your teammates kiddys :nothanks: no one survives buckshot)
Metal Slug:(Shotguns only)One huge round that does crazy damage when it hits, inaccurate and will go through enemies
Electric: Ammo thats temporarily stun enemies. Rare but cheap. Extra damage to robots
Anything you guys can add?

Shotgun slugs should seriously be in the game, not all shotguns shoot buck shot and I think video games fail to recognize that.

This

And I'd love to see, Hollow Point and Full Metal Jacket ammo types make a return.

I'm lukewarm on the Borderlands ammo types, poison and acid and such.

Heck I'd take most of them if the gore animations were upgraded. Sounds like fun blowing a huge crater in your enemy with an explosive shell.

Eh... I don't know about different ammo types like FMJ and such.
But I do have a list of calibers I'd like to see.

7.62
(low tier sniper rifle)
5.56 (assault rifles)
.32 (hunting rifle, .32 revolver)
.45 ACP (thompson)
.50 BMG (second tier sniper rifle)
.44 Magnum (revolver, heavy pistol?)
.22 (varmint rifle, homemade pistol?)
10mm (SMG, 10mm pistol)
9mm (9mm pistol)
5mm (minigun, second tier smg)
shotgun shells (HK CAWS?, pump shotgun?, sawed off?)

I am all for ammo types, but 5+ types per caliber is over kill. Keep it to the basics.
For most small arms: Regular, Armor Piercing, and Hollow Point.
For Shotguns: Bug Shot, Flechette Rounds, and Slugs.

Caliber wise using different measurements between pistol rounds and rifle rounds would increase clarity.
Pistols: 10mm (.38 or .40), and 11.45mm (.45 ACP).
Rifles: .223 (5.56mm), .308 (7.62mm), .338 (8.85 mm)
Shotguns: 12 gauge

Mini-guns could use the 223 instead of 5mm rounds, and heavy machinegun under big guns could use the 338.

That is still 18 types of ammo. More then enough for variation, and not so many the differences would be to small to matter.

actually a FMJ would have less damage, because it penetrates more effectively less kinetic energy transfer over to the body, so the proper effect of a FMJ should be:

Reduced damage, lowers armours damage threshold.

Well I think it's stupid that the chinese and the regular assault rifle use 5,56 ammo.

I don't understand why they take a gun, and base it on two real life assault rifles (namely the AK47 and the G3), but the only similarity with their real life counterparts is their looks...the guns in Fallout 3 certainly does not play the same role as the AK47 or the G3 does in real life. They are much weaker.

I think both of them should use 308. I know that the AK47 use 7.62x39 and the G3 use the NATO 7.62x51 irl, but for the sake of making assault rifle ammo a little more useful, you should be able to use the same ammo on both guns...

As for additional ammo, it would be nice with a bottle of poison, which you could dip projectiles like darts, railway spikes or other pointy ammo which isn't bullet projectiles in.

And for silenced weapons:
You could also add sub-sonic bullets, because most ammunition break the soundbarrier, and then it is rather hopeless to try silence it. The notion of silencing an AK47 or a G3 for instance is horsecrap.

I would also very much like to see Full Metal Jacket and Jacket Hollow Point distinction is ammo. Other types (like explosive rounds) - not so much, but I guess a more variety of ammo can't hurt.

As for caliber types, I'd like to see some fictional\rarely used calibers - like for example 14mm or Caseless rounds.

I want .50 cal Ammo in the game for .50 cal weapons! It is the biggest round you can get. Any bigger and you start talking about Cannon shells.

The M2 Machine Gun, Browning .50 Caliber Machine Gun and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrett_M82.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is one of the few games I've seen that has actually included slugs for shotguns, and yes, it would be nice to see that.

Although I think Erebos is correct, it would not really be feasible to implement as many different types of rounds as some are suggesting, it would probably be kept to the basics.

Fallout tactics had solid Slugs and other types of shells. And more then two types of Shotguns. The double barrel in fallout 3 would have been better if you could fire both at once.

Well the double barrel acquired from Point Lookout did fire both barrels at once and I didn't care for it. Maybe if you could change it, to have the ability to pick one or two barrels. I mean with a double barrel buck shot would be ideal two fire both barrels. Having a large area covered, but it just a regular shotgun I think slugs would be the way to go. More accurate, powerful, you just have to hit you target.

STALKER had it right with the 2 types per caliber, standard and armor piercing. depending on whether you were fighting mutants or armored npcs one was more effective than the other. you get choices but it doesnt over complicate the game with millions of ammo types.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FMJ

Advantages:
- Because the bullets do not expand on impact, they are more effective at piercing armor.
- They are more reliable at penetrating the body to reach vital organs.

Disadvantages:
- They cause smaller holes and thus cause less damage, whereas hollow point bullets expand upon impact to cause larger holes.
- Similarly, they have less stopping power, as most of their momentum is conserved.
