Answering questions regarding the PC for a couple hours.

If Bethesda didn't care one bit about PC gamers they wouldn't continuously support the modding community and take advice from it.

Don't confuse caring about with having a free base to do things that they normally would pay people for...

They "take advice from" people, because it's cheaper than hiring someone to do it... Like they should have in the first place.

They really "phoned it in"...

Game is a console port straight up... And I like many others was delusional to think otherwise.

I have more questions! How would you compare the size and frequency of the 'zones' as opposed to Oblivion - as in how often do you feel you are sitting at a loading screen? I'd say you have a pretty average computer (and I mean no offense, it's just a good system to judge off of for most people) so this could give us an idea of what to expect.

P.S. Quit your [censored]in' about the UI. The OP is the only one in this thread qualified to speak on the matter, and he has stated that it's not that big of a deal and isn't significantly affecting his experience. Grow a pair.

On the PC it's very fast...the loading screens were maybe 10 seconds at the absolute most when I first entered Whiterun...going into and out of houses was fast (less than 5 seconds on average). My PC specs are above somewhere if you want a comparison.

The loading times on the Xbox as compared to even a mediocre PC are not even comparable...some xbox loads are 20-30 seconds.

The Zones themselves are large, I went into 2 "random dungeons" and each one took me about 40-50 minutes to fight through...and they were both unique. The outside world is obviously quite large as well, in addition they seem to have many more settlements "outside" the city zones.

PS - Take the whiny "this is a console port" argument to another thread, please. Whether it is and or it isn't (and it definitely was) it doesn't matter because it STILL plays great on the PC.

One more question - can you mark your own places on the map?

Yes, you can mark one "destination" as a personal map marker. You cannot just create notes all over though, just one map marker which will show up on your compass as well as the map.

Add in the game on an SSD and load times are 1-2 seconds. :gun:

No you can't assign spells to anything but your favorites list and you pull them off of that. Expect a mod for that.
Yes you can.

5-10 seconds is pretty bad loadtime imo, but I got an SSD so I am not concerned.

Yes you can.

I didn't see any option to do so.

Also, I'd say 5 seconds were on the high end. Really they're so fast it's not even a second thought. I never "waited" on a loading screen.

I'm running this on a Phenom x4 965 @3.4GHz
with my 6970 PCS+ and I notice with everything (and the extras set to Ultra)
I get smooth 60 everywhere except when I'm viewing large distances like outside in large cities then I get ~30-40 FPS.

Yeah the game really plays smooth and it's so incredibly scalable.

First of all, thanks for making this thread with mature and reasonable answers. It's nice to see people enjoying the game instead of complaining about every last little thing. I still have 4 hours until unlock so these kinds of threads help move the time.

My question: I remember reading somewhere that you could combine entire armor and weapons to a hotkey and change between them for different strategies. Have you seen this?

Thanks!

Well I can comment about weapons because I was using a long sword and a dagger in my offhand. Every time I equipped my longsword in my mainhand the game "remembered" that I was using my dagger in my offhand and automatically equipped it. I'm assuming the same would be true for a Mace/Shield or a Mace/Spell as well.

Armor I didn't swap very often (it was so early in the game I barely had more than one set of armor!) so I cannot comment on that.

Note: This was not by hotkey in my case but simply selecting the Long Sword as my main hand weapon in the favorites menu.

It's actually made for DX 9... in terms of it's shaders and such.

Can you set full reflections in water like you could for Oblivion and Fallout 3? I notice a distinct lack of them in screen shots.

UI mod will be first on the list for our upcoming Skyrim mods. I'll put money on that.

Damn, I sure hope so!!! This dose not look good at all! This one main reason why I despise consoles!!! Most all games made today are mainly made for consoles and the PC version gets fu????! I have a xbox controller for my PC but cant stand using the damn thing. Its BS that they make some keys unchangeable! PC's NEED to have all key bindings changeable. In Rage, there keys that you could not change....really pi$$ed me off too cuz I'm left handed and it made things really hard. It seriously disappoints me that Bethesda has so neglected its PC fan base like this.

Heya,

Awesome that you can do this for us. Now that you have covered most of the PC issues (UI mainly) thats put me at ease a bit ready for tomorrow morning so thanks for that.

I just want to ask, in your short time in skyrim did you notice any light sources creating dynamic shadows on your character, NPS, environmental objects in exterior locations. I know some interior lighting has this because i have seen on a few videos. But on the same videos in outside locations its hard to tell, even at night when it should be blatantly obvious. Not a gamebreaker just adds to the immersion when a game has good lighting and shadows imo and i was just curious.

Thanks pal.

Yes on high/ultra settings there is dynamic lighting in outdoor areas. Off of torches or whatever may pass by you.

Yes quite obviously that would be the console limitation but the redist came with DX10 structure I would check but I don't have afterburner.

Did you take a look at crafting? If so what is woodcutting / cooking / smithing like?

Do you get to create your own arrows with materials or are we restricted to buying and finding them only? I'm guessing if you can't chop wood and loot bits of it then it won't be possible.

Guards still appear in places that I didn't think they would. I was pickpocketing someone in their house and the guard came out of their closet...I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. But no, it's not at all like Oblivion.

Are the books vast and interesting?

I'm on part 6 of the Lusty Argonian...

But yes the amount of reading material in that game can potentially fill up a day in itself.

I did some alchemy, it's pretty neat and it forces you to make potions to find out what ingredients it uses. For instance if I mix A with B and they both happen to have "Frost Resist" it'll make a frost resist potion and from that point on I now know that is one of their four attributes (it shows up on the item).

Smithing I messed around with some, pretty intuitive and looks to be potentially very deep for a crafting system. Lots to make.

Didn't touch Enchanting (didn't have the time to find many magical items tbh) 7 hours in this game is like scratching the surface of an ocean of content.

Didn't do any woodcutting or cooking.
