Answering questions regarding the PC for a couple hours.

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 3:28 am

If anyone has any questions about the PC version of the game I got to play this morning for about 7 hours...I'm at work now so obviously I'm not playing but I'd be happy to answer any questions regarding the game.

No spoilers in this thread please.

How bad exactly is the menu to control with a mouse? Is it smooth/fluid or a nightmare like many people seem to think? Anything particularly off-putting about the overall game experience?

Hiya, hope you enjoyed your 7ish hours play time :) still waiting for my copy to arrive. Anyways a lot of people are complaining about the UI and lack of mouse control of the UI, menu navigation and such. Have you experienced any probs in this regard?

How does it run? What are your specs? Resolution? Does it ever go below 60?

my impression with the PC UI is that its better controlled with the WASD. im serious. if u treat it like the console is treating it u will be fine. its just faster and easier than using the mouse.
the UI is exactly the same as the consoles with the exception of having the numbers as shortcuts. many say it svcks. i say "its not PC centric but it works well with a controller and it works just as well with the keyboard. not better. not worse"

i love the graphics so far. with some easy to INI tweaks u can bump stuff up a little (like shadows on trees and ground, farther LOD etc).

Not bad at all. It takes a little bit of getting used to and the UI definitely suffers from a bit of consoleitus but it's not bad. Essentially Tab is your "escape" key or "cancel" key. I had a bit of trouble getting used to the UI for about 10 minutes (which is where most rants are coming from) but quickly got used to it.

The one major problem I saw was that you cannot rebind keys that are passively bound to something else in the UI. For instance I wanted to rebind my F key to "sneak". By doing this I could not Favorite an item in my inventory because "F" is used as the default and you cannot rebind it for setting favorites. The same goes for R (which happens to be the key they make you use to drop items).. YOu cannot rebind that one either. That's the only two I noticed so far.

It's not a nightmare at all...it runs awesome on my PC and the graphics are WAY better than I anticipated. So far I really have nothing bad to say about the game...it's frickin skyrim.

See above.

1920 Res on High/Ultra settings with a GTX 560. It's always at 40+. In one instance when there were MANY NPCs on the screen it probably dropped to 30, but nothing bad.

If you had to name one thing you didn't like besides the UI about the game (and that's not a blatant spoiler), what would it be?

UI mod will be first on the list for our upcoming Skyrim mods. I'll put money on that.

That some of the perks are mostly useless. Don't bother getting lockpicking perks, you wont need them if you're even somewhat decent at the lockpicking minigame. As hilarious as this may seem...

Other than that the AI can still be exploited...I won't say how or anything to not tempt people but this is something that so long as you don't actively cheese the game it won't cheese you back.

Probably. It definitely suffers from consoleitus

Are there one button configurable hotkeys for both map and journal?

Can you use the WASD keys to navigate the menu similar to the d-pad for controllers?

Can you crank ini settings to get really good draw distance, how is the max draw distance out of the box compared to the screens we have seen, for example the scene on the tundra with the two giants and mammoths?

So I take it you can open any lock based on your skills and not your avatars skill, unlike Fallout 3, were you had to be at least a certain level?

Yes map is M and Journal is J. By default. As is inventory and skills configurable. This is something they did well, except the fact you cannot bind them to R or F due to overlap.

No it doesn't really work that way for the PC. You're going to be clicking on options much more often.

Didn't have time to tweak the ini at all...I just jumped into playing...had everything at max and the draw distance is just crazy long. You can basically see across the entire map.

Yep...you can walk up to a master lock and try to pick it. Your pick will instantly snap if you're like 20 skill but you can attempt it.

No. If you're talking about the UI... Also no. Some people just don't like to adjust to things...all in all it's a VERY minor inconvience for maybe 15 minutes until you get used to it.

A simple question from me:

Was it worth the painstaking, mind-consuming, soul-tearing wait? :o

Can you assign spells, items, etc to the number keys? One review said you can't.

That is great news regarding the map and journal as those were absurd oversights in Beth last 2 games, but you can't use the WASD keys like the d-pad, that is terrible, I have read a few review for the pc version and yet again there are complaints about the UI being not well optimized for pc. Arrgghh.

Yes you can. Left click = Right hand. Right click = Left Hand. It's that simple.

From the 7 hours I played it? Absolutely. I'm actually going to start over again when I get home and really pour into this game. I unfortuantely rushed this morning (I was too excited) and I forgot how to REALLY play a TES game. Slowly and taking everything in. It's GOTY (for me).

No you can't assign spells to anything but your favorites list and you pull them off of that. Expect a mod for that.

It's not well optimized but at the same time it's not so cumbersome that it's unplayable. Take your time with the game, some people want to play this game like it's an arcade console game. It's not.

How does key remapping work/ can you remap?

E.g. I was thinking in what I've been reading about making the spacebar the normal "select button" and E the jump. Could I do this?

Yes, pretty much everything is rebindable. As I said earlier though the only things you really shouldn't rebind are the R and F keys. They overlap with your inventory functions to create a favorite and to drop an item. By rebinding either of these two keys you'll cause the inventory hoykeys to stop working as well (and there's no way to rebind those). The only way to fix it is to set R and F to their default functions...which happens to be R = Sheathe weapons and F = 3rd person mode.

You can do what you said.

Couple questions,
1. Does the bow and arrow have special finish moves like up close melee?
2. Can you see jewelry on your hands even with gloves on?
3. Does casting a frost spell have an environmental effect like fire does on grass. I.e. does frost freeze water?
