Anyone else gave Katawa Shoujo a try?

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 3:58 pm

It's the same as reading a book, why are you comparing it to video games?
VNs are considered video games, must be the interaction. But That excuse dosnet mean much when you have games like Planetarian or narcissu with no choice.

They are a medium I really like, you have the focus on the story/characters becuase its a book, but you can still have control over the story, and feel the consequences of your actions. Also they seem to have good replay value, to see the different, paths, or find out more about the characters.

Well... this isn't something that I'd expect to see on the gamesas forums. Well, it's not like I'm complaining about it all all.

Damn, I remember how I got into KS, frequenting around on PC Gamer and one of the comments went along the lines of "Pssh... Katawa Shoujo for best free game of the year". Due to my insanely curious nature I had no choice but to check it out, little did I know what I was about to get myself into. I've always been a minor fan of anime and manga, I don't watch too many though, the ones that I've watched and actually enjoyed are Death Note, Evangelion (series and movies) and Tora Dora (mainly because it's a nice breeze of fresh air compared to the former two).

Played it, I decided to just go with what I felt right. I ended up going down the Emi route. I hate Hiaso due to his terrible ability to pick up on topics and his even worse choice of words.

At the moment, after a break of about 3 weeks, I still have the Rin path to complete but I fear for my sanity if I attempt it. According to various people, it is the most emotionally involving of the arcs. Damn, the Lilly and Hanako ones messed me up a ton, so I'm treading into Rin territory with extreme caution.

Sorry if there's any grammatical errors, I'm very sleepy. :)

Most people end up on Emi's path first, its easiest to get stuck on.
It took me 2 manly picnics before getting Hanako's path.

Rin I wouldnt worry, it seems to be hit and miss. People either get hit hard by the path, or they feel nothing. Atleast thats what I have seen.

Yes Hisao is horrible at times. Hanako spoilers

Like the six in her route. She shows him her scars, an intimate moment, showing she trusts him. "damn she has curves in all the right places!"

I reccomend Narcissu if you havent already read it. (at this point, its like im trying to get people into a cult, a glorious, depressing cult).

I've actualy never played Skyrim to be honest, too expensive for me ATM.

I'd just rather punch dragons or blow up the unrighteous than play, or rather read and occasionally click on, a thing like a visual novel.

I'm also not into that whole Japanese thing.

Also, no I don't like Micheal Bay, but I do like Clint Eastwood's movies (Both the ones he stares in and the ones he directed)

Again, try playing it before you bash it.

It is free to download, what do you have to loose?

We must convert more people...

After this thread reaches its limit, can someone make a general VN thread ? Would be good to get reccomendations, and people here are more civil than other sites.

KSG is civil. I don't know anywhere that discusses KS that isn't.

Oh yeah they are civil, but most posts are "that feel", or draw/fanfic stuff.

I was speaking more about VNs than KS. I asked around on /jp/ not a pleasent place. Made /v/ look amazing by comparison.

Shhh, it wouldnt look like I have derailed the thread if that were the topic to begin with :P

Also it could be more convenient, people may play VNs, but not really be interested in KS. They may post in a VN thread though.

A general VN thread would be a good idea I think too. Was thinking about that last night as this thread has lasted longer than I expected it to.

Not complaining about that though :) It's nice to be able to talk about VN's.

I kinda wanted this thread to last long, hoped it would get more people interested in the game and VNs.

Little by little. I firmly believe that some games find their audience regardless of advertising. Something like Katawa Shoujo in particular did that. If the audience is open to their mechanics and are willing to embrace the storylines and characters, settings and themes that are in VN's then they're in for a world of great entertainment and thoughts and feelings. For those that are shut off, their loss...

I dont know, I only tried it because people kept talking about it. I didnt look twice at the game. I just saw it and thought it was [censored] up. Then I just went in, skeptical about it, and found I enjoyed it. If I didnt see people talking about how it wasnt some creepy/sleezy fetish thing, I think I would still have seen it as one.
Glad I tried it though. It was a great thing to read, and got me into VNs. Which imo are better than games.

I thought you would have one anyway, isnt pheonix wright supposed to be good, but only on DS ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snEC0fTgoaY. I really want this VN now, damnit I wish translators would translate faster, it was released in 2003 damnit.
Also JAST USA acted like dikes
On February 24, 2009, a fan-made translation patch was released. The patch, while requiring a copy of the original game, translated the game's entire script. This allowed fans who didn't understand Japanese to enjoy the story as well. As of 7/09, this patch was taken offline, as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JAST_USA bought the rights.
As of July 2011, JAST USA has officially announced that Saya no Uta will be released in English.

Fans translated it years ago, for free. Whats the excuse of the people being paid to do this ?

3DS games aren't compatible with the original DS.

The fans sold the translation to JAST, so it's theirs now.

Ah, dont really pay attention to hand helds, not enough games to interest me.
Then why is it taking so long if they already have the translation ? They had the work done for them.

Licensing, negotiation, and all that stuff. A staff member posted about it on their website:

"Thanks for your comments, and we agree that getting these games out can be frustrating for all involved. We’re doing the best we can, and the Japanese companies are also doing the best they can, but it always takes longer and requires jumping through more hoops than any of us would like. We ask for your continuing patience and support as we move forward. If we can make another couple of successful Nitroplus releases, then Nitroplus is likely to be less cautious in the future."

Damn red tape, slowing things down.
Still I suppose if it helps get more good VNs translated I will be fine. I may see what else nitroplus has on offer while waiting for this.

VNDB says they have 1 other thing translated into english... And its on DVD... Goddamnit.
Any well known/good western made VNs ?

Well, I'll make sure to get around to at least starting on Rin's path sometime this week, I've been moving a lot of stuff around lately so I haven't really had much time to devote the time to complete a five hour playthrough - damn these exams and their constant revision!

Oh man, you would not imagine the amount of times that I've cringed or had to stop and shake my head at some of the things that come out of Hiaso's mouth, damn that boy.

Hmm, a cult? It's been a while since I've been apart of a good ol' fashioned cult, they just don't make 'em like they used to. On a more serious note, I think I'll definitely check it out some time soon. :)

Kara no shojo is pretty good. Its actually quite a bit darker than I expected it to be, and its tying in themes I didnt expect. I cant elaborate becuase I only know hicks has played it, but not finished it. I havent either, but damn im enjoying this.

Allthough I reloaded once to get out of a scene that was just painful to read. I dont see why they need to include six when its not relevant.

But damn this game man, Im suprised just how some of these characters who seem unimportant, end up having a strong link to the plot (atleast it seems that way so far).
Now, back to reading.

Meant to ask before. Are you enjoying the music in Kara?

Was wondering how I'd respond to Rin's path now that it's been a number of weeks since I played and whether the Shadow of Truth track would still be as effective.

Yep. The feels were still felt. Same with Lilly and Red Velvet. :)

The music is amazing. I love the title music, and some of the music creeps me out for some reason, genuinely makes me nervous, its weird.
How far into KNS are you ?

Found some of the creepy music.
Why does http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFFm16YQfDY make me so damn uncomfortable.

Gahhhhhhhh, I got the game over screen. Where did I go wrong damnit.
Reload button, why arent you saving me from this fate!

Well this has replay value, 2:48AM... Sleep is overrated.
ok this is the first time, in a long time I feel I need a walkthrough. Dear god, why give me 3 options, then all have them take me down the same path damnit.

Just up to Song 2 March 8th, just before he starts masquerading at the school.

I got distracted by Thief II and foolishly starting to learn the Korean alphabet. Using it to try and write English is causing people frustration when I leave notes in it. :D It's good practise though to get me familiar with the letters.

That and I realllly need to finish off my Mass Effect 2 character so it's ready for import in ME3.

Im going to warn you, it seems you will likely get the game over ending.
I had to use a guide to get past it (as soon as I got past it, I put stopped reading the guide, I dont want this totally spoiled), and im still not sure who the hell the killer is, and the changes I made werent any obvious ones, too me atleast. Seems I still have quite a way to go before concluding this story. Worst part was the ending was such a tease.

Also we need a new thread.

Oh god, I think I have another bad ending, I know the killer, but I havent been able to stop them.

Ok this is amazing, im at a moral choice, and I really dont know what to do.
