Anyone else gave Katawa Shoujo a try?

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 8:29 pm

Still haven't got around to this. I did try one of the other novels... Something Remembrance? The writing was terrible.

I think VNs are meant for rainy weather and a cup of cacao. :) It's summer here, so I have a bit to wait before I can report back.

True Rememberance? I started it but it didn't particularly grab me either.

Also I saw it priced at $34.95 (cant find a UK site) Is that how much Vns usually are, seems alot.

Also for those who care and liked the soundtrack. KS devs have released it for download (im late, but hadnt seen it posted).
Let's see... last VN I bought I paid $120-ish for (got it at a discount! :))... so, that's quite cheap. Clannad'll set you back $70 minimum.

That better have been a good VN for that price. I will likely have to pay extra to that anyway. I live in the UK, couldnt find a VN sold here, ended up finding it on J-list. Never bought from them before, hopefully they ship stuff to the UK, but god knows how much that will cost. I may wait until I find more VNs, save money to ship multiple things at once. Assuming thats an option.

Also some people reccomended "kana little sister" before, looked it up on wikipedia. No, dear god no. I dont care how many feels you say it has, that stuff just seems way too creepy.

I dunno if they ship internationally, but http://www.rightstuf.com/rssite/main/ has pretty good prices on VNs. The one you were talking about is $27.96 versus the $34.95 on J-list.

For Kana, you should look up a real review before jumping to conclusions. If you look on google you can find two good ones, look for the ones from escapistmagazine.com (the article, not the user review) and forevergeek.com.

J-List owns JAST USA, a licensor of VNs for English releases, they're a safe company, but as Narmy mentioned, you may be able to save a little bit with Rightstuf.

You may also want to check out MangaGamer, they're a European company for English translations and they have some good VNs too (most notably KiraKira and Higurashi)

Actually, I'd say you're quite likely to really enjoy KiraKira, and you can get it as a digital download from MangaGamer, so no worries about shipping either. (Kira-Kira Curtain Call isn't quite as good, but if you're a fan of the original it adds a bit, shame it doesn't stand up well on its own like KiraKira does)

Oh, goodness, I had forgotten MangaGamer is going to release ef - a fairy tale of the two. I'll finally be able to complete them!!!!! (probably won't come out for a while, though)

Ok just checked those places, mangagamer didnt have the VN in stock, I am unsure about rightstuf but Jlist said they do ship to most places. Not sure if they ship stuff from Japan or their place in the US.

I think you said you imported things before, I know its not the same distance, but how expensive is importing something like a game ?

MangaGamer is a competitor to JAST, so of course they don't have Yume Miru Kusuri, they have their own releases. They also offer digital downloads of them, so stock isn't an issue. I recommend you check out KiraKira from theirs (the full version, not the all ages versions, otherwise you'd miss out some of the story I'd think, since there were a couple of key points in the more advlt scenes). There's a demo for it, so you can get a sample before you buy. JAST is a USA company, they just have license agreements with Japanese game manufacturers, but everything they release is produced in the US (they license the game, translate it, have it pressed and published, box it, and sell it).

Importing was that $120 I mentioned. They also aren't in English, since you're buying from Japan. You have to use a text hoker to grab the text (AGTH is a popular one, short for Anime Game Text hoker) and then a translator to translate it (Atlas is a popular one due to having an extensive dictionary and fan-made dictionaries specifically for anime game words not in the default dictionary, but costs money) if you don't know how to read Japanese characters.

The VN has english subs, and Japanese voices. Personally I hope voices can be switched off. I always like the voices in my head more.

Was that just the cost of importing, or buying the product and the import cost.
It looks like there is a downloadable version, but its the same price :/ God I hate that, should be cheaper, uses less resources and takes space on my laptop.

Usually is, though I don't know why anyone would want to do that :(

All the costs added together, since it's either through a middle-man service or a company that is housed in Japan and ships internationally.

That's pretty common. Short of Steam's sales, most of their games aren't cheaper than the retail version. On consoles it's even worse: the digital version is oftentimes more expensive than the retail version.

Well the voices are also in Japanese so it would be distracting hearing 1 language while trying to read another. Same reason I didnt have Russian voices in metro 2033. Also like I said, I just like the voices I come up with in my head more, than the voices chosen. It always happens when I read something, only to see it voiced later I am dissapointed.

How much did the shipping add if you dont mind me asking ?

Yeah I see some things, and just wonder why people would buy digital versions. Seems like it has no benefit, aside from being impatient.

Impossible to say with middle-man services, haven't used a dedicated service for Visual Novels in some time, since the one I used before closed.

Yeah they are starting to wear off. Which makes me sad. I liked the feels. Now I need to find more good VNs.
I wasnt as effected as you, but they did effect me. Well I can always play rin and Lilly's paths. I just dont expect much out of them, Rin is hit and miss, I find her annoying. And Lilly dosent seem interesting at all, and people talk about how she is perfect, blah, blah. If she is perfect, then the path will be dull.

Screw it, I will buy that VN (its shipping a disk, how expensive can it be). Will likely post here again to reccomend it, if I think it gives feels.

Finally got some free time to finish the Emi and Shizune paths, bringing me to 100%. I'm afraid these two are rather unimpressive. Emi's is ok, but too generic and childish, while Shizune's is just plain boring. Oh well, Hanako's and Lilly's were worth it.

And Lilly dosent seem interesting at all, and people talk about how she is perfect, blah, blah. If she is perfect, then the path will be dull.
I had similar doubts when I started on her path, but while she is less flawed than most of the other heroines, her path is still great (minus the ending).

About half-way through the second animated version of Kanon. Really enjoying it so far.

Does anyone have experience with the VN and care to give an opinion?

I was just thinking about this thread.

The VN I ordered is going to take a while, but the total cost was $46.95.
Which is great, becuase its not too expensive. And I know some people who like VNs arent in the US. I live in the UK, so yeah this is great. VNs arent as expensive to import as I worried.

Also http://vndb.org/v155 looks like it has potential.

(off topic)
How can I forget spoilers ? I may have had the VN I ordered spoiled for me :/

Yup, it's one of my all-time favorites. The 2006 anime is a really good adaption of the VN (unlike say, Tsukihime), so if you like the anime then you will most likely like the VN as well.

I like how it has a lot of choices, but is fairly flexible in which choices you can pick to get the endings you want.

Is Tsukihime a good VN ? VNDB has given it high ratings, but is because it has a good story ? Or do you start to care, about the characters ?
Both would be best, but I like VNs which effect me emotionaly, despite there being no grand story. E.g Narcissu.

The story and characters are both good, but it's not a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_novel#Nakige type game.

Ok YMK arrived, so far its hit and miss. Its funny, the paths seem to handle different things, one is drugs, the other is bullying. Not sure about the other one.
But six isnt handled well, the one scene I forced myself to read, ws sut bad, and it dragged. Also I didnt even know much about the character I ended up with... I actually ended up with her on accident, didnt expect that (ws trying for the bullying route, apparently its most depressing).

It has potential, but so far I think KS is better.

The quest for feels continues. I will start from scratch, hope to get on the right path.

Late update:

I dont think I can play this. Aeka's route, I dont want to keep reading. Its just evil, [censored] I cant. Rage, sadness I just want to scream, to reach into the story and kill people. [censored] the developer, [censored] the game, [censored] it all. I feel like I dont know, I feel ill and angry. Why the [censored] did I read this far. I cant think of how to word this, just screaming and swearing.

Last edit: Forced myself to finish it. I was near the end. I am glad its over. I dont think I could play it again though, I am satisfied keeping this as my only save/playthrough.

Some Fuko in Clannad will help amazingly there's actually a smilie that looks perfect for her! :sorcerer: Haven't tried the VN but the anime is absolutely worth watching. Sad at times, really, really sad at times but overall heartwarming.

Has anyone gone back after a while to replay parts of KS yet? I was thinking of going back through Lilly's route over the next few days to see if it grabs me the way it did originally.
