Are we stuck with this UI on pc?

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 3:58 pm

I use a wired 360 controller on the PC.
The only problem I have with the UI.

It needs a function that lets you rearrange the favorites list.
It's annoying to switch to something at the bottom of the list just to have to switch to something at the top of the list.
This becomes especially true for Mages or anyone who has a favorites list stretching into the 10+ item range.

I'd like to be able to put certain commonly used skills next to each other.

Give some options on how we want it sorted.
Attack > Utility (Think of how the Final Fantasy games sorted magic)
Utility > Attack
Custom sort

What would actually be cool is if the favorites had tabs at the top.
So far, left and right on the d-pad are not used for the favorites menu only up and down.

Make 2 Favorites Categories
Item Favorites and Magic Favorites

Because when you think about it. It's the abundance of Magic being mixed with the sword, shield, bow, torch etc. that is causing alot of up and down scrolling through the favorites while playing.
Wheras if you added in left and right, you could get away with 1 button press instead of 9 button presses.

... Do they make a mouse/keyboard that has rumble?
... Do you own, said mouse/keyboard?
Then use a controller.

PC user here. I love the UI. It's intuitive and far faster than the Oblivion or Morrowind UIs were. Haven't had any problems with it.

you're just weird

I would not be very optimistic about the atrocious UI being fixed by gamesas themselves, mostly likely it will fall exclusively on modders. I only hope they don't make this same mistake in TES6.

Stranger things have happened though, as they did sort of improve the disorganized journal in Morrowind in the Bloodmoon expansion.

Don't get me started on the crappy quest journal here.

I understand "trim the fat" and getting rid of excessive stuff, but the quest journal in this game is horrible.

Especially the Misc section. Gives me an objective but doesn't bother to tell me where? WTF.

The misc section does show you for the most part the general area you need to be in. You just need to spend more time paying attention to your options in the journal in relation to having it 'show on map'

The basic design of the UI is not going to change, of course, and personally I find it more convenient to use than any previous RPG I've played.
Where to begin...

- no in-menu paper doll model to preview what's equipped
- why do I need to scroll through multiple lists to see my inventory? why is my inventory not laid out plainly so I can view it in its entirety at once like Morrowind
- no visual indicator of status effects without going out of game, into the Active Effects menu
- a hotkey system that any diablo-clone would put to shame
- I should not need to go into a paused submenu to see what my skill/weapon hotkey assignments are
- I should be able to easily and painlessly set up a specific dual-wield or sword+shield combo to one hotkey, and have it predicably change to that specific setup, without wondering if pressing that hotkey will result in two iron swords, 1 iron sword + spell, or 1 iron sword + torch
- the constellation system that makes "cool" looking navigation a priority over just laying out all the perk tree info in a format where you can take it all in at once.

If you want to see changes to the basic design of the UI, you will need to wait for some sort of mod to do that.

Personally, I found Morrowind's inventory menu to be rather inconvenient compared with more recent games.

The problems people have been experiencing with hotkeys and keybinding issues are likely to be fixed in an upcoming patch, from what I gather of the dev comments in http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1261029-keybinding-issues-2-hotkeys-favorites-numpad-drop-item-take-book-spend-dragon-soul-etc/

What are you referring to specifically?

If you are experiencing technical issues with keybindings or activating certain menu functions, feel free to post a description of your issue in the following discussion thread from the PC Support section:

Good for you!

It works fine for me.
Yes, the PC interface "works" in the sense that it's not outright broken, but it's also clumsy and unintuitive.

Doesn't work with M+KB? I can access everything I need with Tab, WASD, and E. All within hands reach, and it's fast, too. I really don't see the point behind this whining.

when we pc players have access to a screen thats much closer to us...tons and tons more possible keybinds not including modifiers which could then double that number....much greater range of motion/speed/accuracy of the mouse......and we then have to settle for literally the simplest possible thing they can think of that doesnt take advantage of literally anything the pc has to offer....thats more than a slight annoyance...especially when its something you have to use constantly throughout the game.

This.

I don't think many people are claiming the UI is broken -- it does what its designed to. Unfortunately the design is suboptimal and inefficient for PC use. Other than the fact that PC users sit much closer to the screen than console gamers, we also have higher resolution displays -- the two of these combined make it so that having GIANT text that's seemingly intended for the visually impaired, and inventory systems that must be scrolled through instead of placed on one screen an ineffective design for PC, and it's not making efficient use of available screen real estate.

Functions that I could have performed with one key stroke and some mouse navigation + clicking in Morrowind now require more input to achieve the same thing, and often with finicky results due to the imprecision of the cursor design.

I have generally found it a bit more satisfying to use keyboard shortcuts compared with navigating menus with a mouse. Perhaps it's because I come from a background working with creative suite and video editing apps where keyboard shortcuts save a great deal of time.

Overall I''m actually pretty pleased with it. My only complaint however is that highlighted menu options (bigger text) don't follow the cursor, only the WASD keys can affect that. Doesn't really harm functionality, but kind of annoying aesthetically.

Question: Can you see how much Health / Magicka / Stamina you have without going to the "Skill" menu? I delay leveling, and if I go to the skills page I have to level. (Unless I'm mistaken)

Elder Scrolls is all about "play it your own way". Then let us Bethesda. Give us more UI's to choose from. I don't like the current one. I want Elder Scrolls, not a F*****ing Ipod. Give us Morrowin UI, Oblivion UI and Fallout UI for Skyrim. ( and the Ipod one, for those who like it...)

And fix Keybord and Mouse support. Cuz I can't play this game the way I like right now....

Yes, the bar only appears when you use magicka or stamina or lose some of your health.

also a secondary white bar appears when you use a magic item, to let you know how many charges it has left.

It's terrible. Terrible, terrible, terrible. It's clear that there are no PC gamers (or possibly even PC testers) in Bethesda.

I prefere the UI style of the previous elder scroll games to be honest.
For a PC, they were easier and more intuitive to use.
So I will be waiting in line for the UI mod with joy, to gain it back.

It is a shame that they made the game primarily for the Console with the PC as an after thought.
The series owes it success to the modding community partially afterall, something PC users of the game do.
Anyone who doubts the modders have made the elderscrolls game what they were, has to ask themselves;
Have you used a mod?
If not, do you already know that Modding is a normal part of this game?
It is, and it generates huge communities and buzz, something that very few other games succeed at doing.

While i'm sure many will still like the UI, many might even like it, many don't.
It was designed for the Console and as something that can be easily changed, why wasn't it?
I don't buy it they purposeful left it open for Modders to do.

Not only all of that, but i have a great deal of screen area for basic things like debuff indicators and timers, button bars, item popups and on screen tooltips, movable objects, single page character data, and 1 click deep menus. Even the most basic MMOs have a better UI for PC then this game.
