"Bethesda's latest potential masterpiece."

Post » Fri Oct 09, 2009 3:15 pm

I'm an active member of the GI Online community, and based on what I'm reading there, as well as a conversation I just has with one of their head editors, Andrew Reiner, I'm starting to get really excited. Well I was already really excited. Now I'm REALLY excited. So first off is this article: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/12/13/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-coming-next-issue.aspx

Check out this quote: "Now that we've seen the game up close and personal at Bethesda Game Studios, we're even more stoked to share what we've learned. Check back here on January 6th to see the cover reveal, which is the beginning of an entire month of coverage devoted to Bethesda's latest potential masterpiece."

GI doesn't usually throw around words like "masterpiece."

And that's not all. I was just talking with Andrew Reiner on twitter and he told me some pretty interesting things...

First off is this little nugget about Skyrim: "And wait until you see what this game is all about! Mind...blown..." I'm not sure if he's talking about the plot or the game in general, but either way it's great news.

Then there's this: "You deserve the teasing for the amount of times you asked about this game. I wanted to tell you for about a year." I've been bothering him and the other guys at GI about Elder Scrolls V for a long time. That's what he's talking about here. The important thing to take away is the "about a year." According to Reiner, GI has known about Skyrim for about a year. If they started talking to Beth about a year ago, wouldn't you think that Beth's been all but done with Skyrim for about a year? Or at least pretty far along with Skyrim for about a year... That'll give them another additional year to really polish up the game and make it perfect. Maybe I'm way off, but thats what I'm thinking...

In conclusion: GI's calling Skyrim a masterpiece, Reiner's saying the game blows his mind, and I'm dying a little inside with each passing day that brings no new info on Skyrim...

Oh, and here's a link to Reiner's Twitter for all you doubters: http://twitter.com/Andrew_Reiner

The year thing is pretty interesting, to be in touch with GI a year ago about a game who's release will be 11/11/11, is that normal?

Optimists will focus on "masterpiece".

Pessimists will focus on "potential".

I can't wait...

Spoiler
to read about complaints on how it was disappointing.

I'm just kidding. I'm very optimistic about this game.

Personally, I find that getting excited is absolutely the worst thing one can do between the announcement to the release. I know it's inevitable, but the dangers of overhyping and letting imaginations run wild are very real. I know I'll be making it a rule to observe only at a distance, and to judge every publication or video or trailer or preview with a small dose of skepticism. Then I don't have to deal with unrealistic expectations when the game actually comes out, regardless of how it turns out.

Well, it takes incredibly tight corporate security (and a fun, loyal work atmosphere) to prevent leaks pouring out from within. My bet is that the game is SO dang good that the people involved in its creation were just too proud to leak any news about Skyrim. I am completely blown away by the fact that they'd been working on this for over two years and no one in this community had gotten wind of it. Like the OP, that tells me something. It tells me that the game is surreal - surreal enough that even the most hardened reviewers are in awe.

I'm stoking up by preparing to buy a new PC come summer 2011 - just for Skyrim.

Where do you think I should get my "Skyrim 11-11-11" tattoo? What's most stylish -- across my chest, or on my forehead?

I'm more impressed by "mind = blown" than by "potential masterpiece." It gives me hope for some really bat[censored], mythological beast of a storyline :D

Me as well. I don't think a generic storyline with dragons would blow someone's mind. I mean, Dragon Age was good and all, but it wasn't mind blowing. :D

Pessimists will focus on "potential".

:D

And realists are going to focus on the fact that of course the people developing a game are going to call it mind blowing, and video game "journalism" more often than not amounts to an advertisemant for the game in article form.

OH GOD. MASTERPIECE IS ALSO AN 11 LETTER WORD! AUUUUGH

On a lesser and more sane note, I'm glad we were right about the February issue, and I can't wait to buy a copy and read it over countless times, rocking back and forth in the corner for the next 11 months with my tome of knowledge.

2010 had the most GOTY contenders, but I'm feeling that 2011 is going to have the tightest run for GOTY.
But I feel and hope that Skyrim is going to take it!

I certainly hope that I get my mind blown by Skyrim. :shocking: I'm even playing a bit of Oblivion (on the X360) just in anticipation of it.
