Black Reach - Unrealized potential

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 3:55 am

Just wondering if anyone else found this cavernous space a little on the empty side? So many beautiful visuals, anchored by the intriguing Silent City, which seemed more like a city than anything above ground. But only a few remnants of Falmer, a few spiders and frost trolls, one lonely giant, inhabiiting it. A few more wisp mother enemies spawned randomly wouldn't have hurt either, they fit in better here than other enemies.

One elderscroll, 30 crimson nirnroots, and thats all the questlines? Would like to know what the Falmer followers in rags were all about at least... A place this mysterious needs a good mystery questline within it. Something Dwemerian obviously

Tragic, just one of many places purpose built for one quest and thats all.

I suppose with a project as massive as Skyrim all the "love" a dev wants to put into an area gets time managed away!

I felt it was a little barren as well, would have been a great place to put a Falmer super strong hold/city.
Spoiler
There's also a dragon down there, and a unique one at that as well. It's a steep or two above a ancient dragon.

There are a couple of buildings that look odd when you walk into them, they just finish with a weird looking wall. - i was hoping they would be part of a future DLC. Not likely though.

Really??!!

I loved Blackreach because it's so different to the world above. But I also hate it because it's so eerily empty. Sure there's a few falmer to bully but that's about it.

Yep, you need to
Spoiler
Hit the globe looking chandelier with unrelenting force shout and it calls him. But like I said, I'm pretty sure he's a little harder then a normal ancient dragon.

Agreed. I was really surprised the first time I stuck my nose into the Silent City Catacombs and found actual people inside. Then it turned straight to nightmare fuel when they turned on me as soon as I attacked one of their Falmer "masters."

Besides that, I think the thing that disappointed me most about Blackreach (aside from a glitch that kept causing it to suddenly be daytime on occasion; talk about ruining the atmosphere) was...well, I read http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:The_Falmer:_A_Study just before delving down into it. Which contains this tidbit:

Generations after they first sought solace among the dwarves, and experienced bitter betrayal, the Falmer rose up against their oppressors. They overthrew the dwarves, and fled even further down, into Blackreach's deepest, most hidden reaches.
...
Finally free from the threat of their Dwemer overlords, the Falmer were able to spread freely throughout Blackreach.

I was expecting hordes of Falmer swarming up from the impenetrable deep--that I'd basically be walking into a proper hive. Instead, I got...a giant, a dragon, some spiders, and a good handful of Falmer. No impenetrable deep. No swarming hive. MEH. :P I wanted a proper challenge, dang it!

On your spoiler part, I dunno about that.

I killed that dragon in a couple of hits if I remember, no challenge at all, but ancient dragons will usually destroy me in a matter seconds if I'm not careful.

I agree with this... to an extent. While I was pondering this very thing, my thoughts were overcome with the joy of kiling them all (and getting the beautiful beheading killcams in the process). Once they were all dead, a quest to find out why they were there in the first place seemed like such a fruitless endeavor... they're dead now, who cares?! LOL.

Some of these are actually links to upper world dwemer ruins, which haven't been activated with your orb yet. Once activated these walls drop down forming a stairwell up.... Discovered this with Mynzchaleft recently...

Agree though, DLC for BlackReach would be nice! Think most would want something entirely new for a location tho

I've said a number of times that this could have been the greatest dungeon of all time (or words to that effect lol).

There should have been many areas overrun with enemies - just think of fighting in a dungeon for a week or more.

Could have/should have been, but wasn't.

Still an interesting place, but really a loss overall.

I would love DLC to include something with Blackreach... and a part of me wants to delve so deep in one of the Dwemer ruins there that I hit some lava beds (like Morrowind). Falmer are fun and exciting to fight because when they attack in packs, it can get quite challenging. So, they are my attraction to the Dwemer ruins.

Elder dragon sorry, but he did kick my ass the first time I called him, but after that he was pretty predictable, he really doesn't have anywhere to go

I think it's mainly for exploration - there are tons of separate dungeons in Blackreach to explore. Also it's not just for one quest. Your character could LIVE in Blackreach, or just return to Blackreach for a visit.

Next to the Forsworn, the Falmer are probably the most vicious b*stards in the game. There's a few places I've been swarmed over by them, and had to go stealth mode and take them out one at a time to get past.

I was really asking/ inquiring more about storyline and mystery than just "more baddies to behead/" though.... Lavabeds is a cool thought, but it's easy to imagine a spinoff of a "Jungle type world" ala "Journey to the Center of the Earth" or some ER Burroughs type fantasy locales....

Twas a beautiful place indeed, it could have been used to ultimately expand both the Dwemer and Falmer Lore but alas we got 1 very annoying quest for it

Ha that would be nice, find out that the dwemer delved tooOOOooo deep and woke a massive evil from it's slumber that the Falmer are now worshiping :bonk: :ahhh: :dead:

I feel like this isn't the last visit to Blackreach devs have insotre for us...If you heard about the Snow Elf coding thing in the latest patch then perhaps Blackreach is the start of the next DLC or maybe future DLC if not this one.

I don't know about tons, but yes, it's possible to spend some hours in Black Reach just "chilling" from the game dynamic aboveworld in Skyrim. Last time down, I remembered to take a pick axe and do the geode mining. Gets boring though...

Black Reach does have some great photo-op setups for screen captures though! A particular favorite would be the throne platform you can access at the top of the Hall of Rumination. Illia and Rexx have several savepoints with various poses and different gear there. Put a Centurion heart on each pedestal aside the throne to make it all the more classic looking.

I hope there will be more quests related to Blackreach in the future because it's just a waste to leave it empty.
Pretty much like that enormous landmass to the south east of Skyrim that's supposed to be morrowwind. Why put it there if it's useless? It's like half the size of Skyrim anyhow and the talk of it being there simply for scenery purposes is ridiculous as you have to spend a good 20 minutes climbing up mountains just to get a peak of Red Mountain!

I was DUMBFOUNDED when I first discovered this place. Whoever developed this for the game is an impressive person - WOW.

The area is ripe for lots of storylines, to be sure. I completed the red nirnroot quest, massacred the reviled falmer and their slaves and minions, and even liberated and (regretfully) slew the dragon Volyndyrol (or whatever his name was.) But the 'slave city' of teh falmer and the presence of the dragon, giant and frost trolls were all bizarre.

There is a LOT that could be done with this 7th skyrim province. I just might build a mod with this in mind, if I can get around to it.

Note: the fact that the falmer have slaves is highly significant to me.

Most of this stuff is explained in books... basically do the thieves guild line, and read as much on the falmer as you can find during those quests.

East of Riften, head towards black briar lodge or their manor I think it is. Anyway f ollow the main road, you need to look on the map carefully for a gap in the mountains that make up Skyrims border. The road runs down between either side of this gap in the mountain until it stops in front of an archway that you're not allowed to pass. If you climb up on the surrounding mountains you can see Red Mountain in the distance. It's as if that archway is a gate to MorrowWind that we're not allowed to pass!
