Blackreach did it for me

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 6:26 am

I'm probably one of the very few people around who has sunk about 200+ hours into this game without ever having even seen Blackreach. Well, I finally decided to start doing the MQ, and the moment I set foot into Blackreach, that sense of wonder and amazement hit me in the face like a brick. That one underground city is worth buying the game for.

Reminded me of a cross between Pandora and Menzoberranzan. I must have spent an hour and half just walking around that city killing Falmer and Dwemer machines and even a giant. I didn't even know the trick with the giant orange orb until I read the wiki page for Blackreach. Needless to say, I went back to Blackreach just for that.

Is there ANYTHING else like that in this game that I have yet to discover? Maybe not in look and style, but is there another place with that large of a scale and equally as mesmerizing?

I hate it down there. I can imagine the moist soil smell in the air that I breath and make me feel claustrophobic.

A lot of places in the wilderness. I can't list them all, I see them whilst hunting. I'll get a rough idea of where they are and get back to you.

(edit: off the top of my head, Bard's Leap Summit has a fantastic view, as does the north face of Mount Anthor - there's a ledge about halfway down. There's also a small lake high in the mountains near Riften that may be worth your while. There's Frostmere Crypt - be warned, heavily defended - and Shadowgreen Cavern, and a place that you access on the quest for Meridia)

I didn't get down there until late-game as well and am equally awed. Calls out for a Dwemer rave :)

Blackreach creeps me out, I hate going there. But Ill admit design wise its probably the best "zone" in the game.

Let me tell you this... complete the Main Quest and once you return to the Throat of the World, hop all the way up to the top of the Throat of the World, to where the Notched Pickaxe is... it is truly mesmerizing up there after the satisfying conclusion to the main quest.

Oddly, I went in there and wanted to get out as fast as possible. But it does look awesome.

I have yet to be there in the MQ. However, I did venture into the sighless pit(I believe that's the name) and after a bit in the cave you venture into a dwemer ruin and I happened to walk into an area which I thought was a whole new town(it wasn't but still) the ceiling of the place looked like 10 thousand stars in the sky... It was just a beautiful sight and to know the falmer live there Is just a waste.

I know the place is southwest of winter hold near azura's star. Anyone been?

Hmmm... no, I can't say that I have. Do you have a possible location in the UESP wiki that I could refer to? I'm suddenly interested in looking at it now.

Agreed. I had to immediately call my friend to tell him about it. He just got there and felt the same thing.

I saw the mushrooms and the otherworldly colors and was immediately thinking of Menzoberranazan. It's a great area, wonderfully designed.

It's an interesting area. I'm unthrilled with the cyan lighting - I have a really hard time "seeing" with that type of light/glow (same thing in places like Shimmermist Cave). And because it's so ill-lit and hard to see, I had a VERY difficult time figuring out where I was, where I had been, and where I needed to go.

The place would have been amazing had the lighting been better.

Sorry I couldn't help you out with the UESP wiki but I will look on my game in just a moment. I know I just recently went to azura's star and followed a dirt path to where I saw a falmer hut, then a giant hole. Give me about 5-10 minutes.

That's what make it so amazing to me. The poor lighting, giant mushrooms, and genuinely creepy soundtrack played in that area was a truly incredible atmosphere. Made me very uneasy and even a little nervous.

It just made me annoyed that I couldn't thoroughly enjoy it because I couldn't see well. [And I was about 300 hours in before I did the MQ on one toon - just to get it over with.... that was before I knew you didn't have to do the MQ to talk to Septimus etc.]

@ icerunner. Sightless pit is probably 1 1/2 inches to the left from shrine of azura if your zoomed out of map all the way. Probably the 8:30 clock position from shrine of azura. (sorry about the bad direction giving...there's no y-x coordinates or anything to help with)

The place is so loaded with atmosphere and they really did a great job on it. I had gone there first as part of the MQ and left but I went back for the other quest and really went over almost every inch of the place. It's one of the most memorable places in Skyrim...loved it. :tes:

don't have to complete the main quest. you just need to get to the part where you first talk to Paarthurnax.
