Buildings and structures in Skyrim. Drab. Ugly. Boring.

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 6:55 pm

The thing I don't understand is how you can walk on floors without falling through. There are no joists at all to support the floor decking, and the floor decking is as thin as plywood subflooring, which requires even smaller floor joist spacing than floor decking.

You type is the truth. If inside of this house where I living in now is built like the insides of house in Skyrim I will not be sitting on this floor. I be sitting on the concrete floor nursing my poor butt and looking at the big hole I just made.

But I still like the house in the game. From the outside though.

Some posts went away. This is not the place to throw around personal insults.

That explains the sent of post death in the room...you pulled out your post smiting weapon  silly Moderator; my only issue with the way the buildings look is inside my house looks awful i felt like I need a Tet shot when i first entered was expecting a cocroach the size of possom to crawl out from under the boxes in the corner and "say oh new tenants good food is running low drop any crumbs in the corner over there."

Whatever happened to old video gaming times huh? Back then, if a game was fun regardless of bugs, It was a FANTASTIC game. Now, people care about Architecture in a video game? Seriously, grow up, there's nothing wrong with the houses

I love the architecture. The Blue Palace in particular is beautiful.

I use to say... "Skyrim is Amazingly Beautyful!... From a safe distance..."

Not too far though or the crappy draw distance and LOD models and textures makes short work of that.

The first clue as to what kind of thread this is:

The OP going on and on about how terrible the architecture looks, without ever once giving any basis for comparison nor giving an example of what is "good" architecture for a game like Skyrim.

Usually, if it's someone who wants to stir up discussion, that person will state his case more clearly and actually provide what is called constructive criticism in his statements.

If it's someone who just wants to stir [censored] up and see how much of a response he can continue to get, he'll make a thread where instead of any kind of real constructive criticism, it's just a repetition of "_______ svcks in Skyrim," with the blank this time being the architecture.

Good job on keeping the bait going, OP.

I find the buildings lack character, look dull and have ugly low-res textures. That was what I wanted to say so I said it. I don't have to justify my opinions to you or anybody else. If you feel I didn't state my case clearly I'm sorry but everyone else seemed to understand it. Maybe you have reading comprehension issues?

I noticed you don't seem to have any opinion on the subject at all so are we to assume your sole reason for coming in here was to stir things up and yell 'troll' for the hell of it? You are what you claim to hate.

I find the buildings lack character, look dull and have ugly low-res textures. That was what I wanted to say so I said it.

And I've read through enough of this thread to notice that whenever you said anything, it tended more towards vagueness, and that at several points you were asked to clarify just what it was that you were really on about in the first place. It seems clear communications is a gradual process with you.

I don't have to justify my opinions to you or anybody else.

Actually, since you're the one who made the thread in the first place in order to air your opinion for everyone else's edification, yes you do. If you want people to accept your opinion and your "constructive" criticism, then you must qualify it or otherwise no one has any real reason to bother even addressing it. Just saying that something "svcks" isn't enough.

If you feel I didn't state my case clearly I'm sorry but everyone else seemed to understand it. Maybe you have reading comprehension issues?

I have also noticed that you seem to be rather delightfully quick in making these kinds of suggestive insults and insinuations throughout your thread, which is usually one of the more obvious hallmarks of someone just looking for getting reactions rather than discussion.

I never claimed to hate anything, so less of your words in my mouth, thank you.

I read through the thread and at first thought that it would be interesting, because I thought the architecture was rather spot-on for fitting the setting, and that the details rendered added further to the overall look and feel of the land of Skyrim. The more I read of it, especially your responses throughout, the more it became pretty clear to me that this thread is more a put-on than an actual discussion, for you. The general tenor of your statements and responses, the manner in which you were still having to be asked to clarify just what you were trying to say in the first place, and the fact that it is yet another thread in which mods had to go through and prune posts because of personal insults all pretty much point to the fact that you succeeded in getting a reaction and further in maintaining that reaction.

I initially wanted to join in on a discussion of what I thought was going to be the merits of various styles and schools of architecture, and how suitable each could have been to the setting (I'm partial to the Gothic style, what with the penchance for tall spires everywhere), but as I read through your thread, I found that it was hardly much of a discussion and more just an ongoing series of reactions back and forth.

Hence, why I said "good job."

Edit: "do," not "are." D'oh.

I think they look great, it suits the area... What were you expecting, castles and mansions and every house being perfect in a rough poor land?

THIS IS SKYRIM!

P.S: Markarth is the best designed town.

I kinda agree. I know they had to stick with the viking architecture, but atleast they could have give a little twists to it. Skyrims architecture could use a little "fantasy" to it. The cities doesnt look that magnificent as all the buildinngs look freaking boring.

For example: LOTR has a traditional fantasy setting, but then we got Minas Tirith and you can clearly see that it has a little "fantasy" feeling over it.

1. I've given an example of what I consider to be a more interesting visual approach to the buildings. You didn't read it, maybe you just skimmed to the end so you could make your attack on what you consider a 'troll'?

2. I don't need to 'qualify' anything beyond my initial statement. I stated clearly what my problem with the visuals were I can't put it any more simply if you still don't understand it, sorry.

3. Insults and insinuations? You are the one who came in here and attacked me. You keep mentioning 'constructive' yet your only contribution to this thread is a personal attack on another poster is that what you consider constructive?

4. The mod had to remove posts because someone came in here and just like you, rather than discuss the subject matter simply suggested I need a reverse lobotomy. It was completely unprovoked hence posts were removed.

Lifeless low-res buildings with no character are something I expect to see in Daggerfall not in an RPG released in 2012. I get the impression you are taking my comments against the game personally. Think about that for a minute, I'm talking about the game, you are talking about me. I don't think we need to look any further to see who exactly is the troll here. I've been attacked several times on this thread for no reason other than I don't like the buildings in the game or their choice of colours and horrible low res textures it's just an opinion yet it seems to be open house to attack me personally just for that and I'm getting tired of it. If you don't have anything to add seriously there must be another thread more to your liking you could spend your time in.

They look like real [censored] houses that might actually exist and pretty much did at one point in history exist. I'm not sure what you're looking for.

Amen to that. I think there is enough variation between cities. The little towns do look a bit same, but whit what should they build their houses with if not wood and stone? For example I think Windhelm is freaking amazing starting with the awesome gate. Best part is that I can imagine those houses in medieval Scandinavia.

@ the OP

"4. The mod had to remove posts because someone came in here and just like you, rather than discuss the subject matter simply suggested I need a reverse lobotomy. It was completely unprovoked hence posts were removed."

You are the one who suggested you needed a lobotomy....you said it in your first post.

"I'm off to get a lobotomy then..."

I merely took you up on your own suggestion and recommended a reversal.

You however insulted Irish people in general in you reply to me....which is racist.

I really love the number of unique buildings in Skyrim. Like in each of the major towns you have a unique jarl's palace and temple.

Oblivion and Morrowind just replicated the same temple in each and every town but in Skyrim Whiterun has a unique one dedicated to Kynareth, Solitude an imperial one to the Eight, Riften one to Mara, Markarth to Dibella, and and Windhelm to Talos.

The palaces are also very nice like the Blue Palace, Dragonreach, and the Hall of Kings in Windhelm.

My favorite city architecture is Riften with the old wood and ivyed stone built around the lake and canol.

Yes this is how I felt about Morrowind. The alien hostile landscape looked and felt like an enemy. I liked that. I disliked Oblivion's prettiness.
I like Skyrim because of its rugged alpine beauty.
I think the OP is just trolling personally. I guess he's gotten a good deal of mileage out of it.

I disagree with the OP completely, but I do hope we're going to some place more exotic with the next game. Valenwood, Summerset Isles, or Elsweyr. This is the second game in a row now where we've had human-influenced history and human-influenced architecture and while I do love the look of Skyrim, I just feel like your creativity as a designer is severely stunted when using our own real-world influences and history as a basis for your design.

I really would like to see something completely unique and foreign and alien. Wild jungles or exotic islands or civilizations built in the tree-tops of a mystical forest or huge desert empires with feuding pashas and sultans.

I would like to see the next Elder Scrolls game take on a James Cameron-esque vision of world building and to make something truly unique and exotic.

From Todd Howard interviews e.g. http://www.gameswelt.tv/19748/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/video-interview-mit-todd-howard.html?mode=1, probably the next one will be quite far out. Though apparently they are counting Shivering Isles as a "far out" one, so I guess it is not totally decided. But most likely would be Khajiit, Argonians or Bosmer, which are all quite weird. If I were them I would wait for the next generation for Valenwood. Seems quite processor-intensive as you might say.

I'm just trying to appease the peasants. They won't have their king 'Skyrim' dissed by someone who points out the woeful inadequacies nay blindness of the art team from someone who sees much that is hidden 'me'. I am in fact doomed to be correct in all instances. It is a lonely life but I shall bear this burden in the name of, er, He Who Hates Boring Buildings With Stupid Grey Wood Bits. Yes, that's it.
Oh, get off your high horse and quit acting like your bad opinion of the buildings is a cold hard fact like you seem to think it is. It'ss your taste thaat's all, the developers did absolutely nothing wrong her except in your mind.

I hate to break it to you, but it isn't just the saturation. It's also the artwork itself that looks cartoony. The vanilla version looks like a real thatched roof, particularly one which has been in place for a while and is worn in. That is realistic detail.

Now if you don't particularly like it, that is fine. Since you are already using a mod to correct what you feel Bethesda got wrong, then you are doing exactly what the mod-ability of Skyrim was designed to allow you to do: experience skyrim as you prefer.

So really, there is nothing more to say in this thread, from my perspective. That mod renders the argument moot...

Google Images "thatched roof," you will find that there are a variety of different styles. From a quick glance, Skyrim's thatch appears similar to that of the African sort. However, there are many different styles, some of which look neat and manicured (as in the mod), and others that look like loose hay simply strung together and layered in mats (as in Skyrim.)

Personally, I think thatch will always be drab. *shrug*

Today's thatch-roof cottages in Europe are pretty tidy but the older ones in painters and early photos look like Skyrim's.

Just a hundred years ago some European peasants lived in housing like this-

That makes Skyrim houses look rich!
