My constant reference to the incredibly over-used horrible drab grey low-texture wood wasn't a dead giveaway then?

Well, when you started saying that you hated buildings since Morrowind and that every structure and architecture work made by Bethesda was U.G.L.Y instead of just saying: "The Textures used in the houses are ugly, I would like something like this: ~le link~" things got a little complicated to understand. :P

Realistic? If that's what you want stop playing computer games tear the curtains down off your windows and take that brave tentative first step outside your front door.
Skyrim is supposed to be gritty and rugged, that mod makes everything look WAY too cartoony.

It's actually a mixture of both for me. I liked the mushroomy houses in Morrowind, there were some places I liked in Oblivion but largely they made terrible houses and villages though they made some incredible locations like Vive Vec (spelling?) in Morrowind and some great places in Oblivion it's all scaled down now in Skyrim but I still love the game I just wished the buildings didn't svck but it's okay because they actually don't as everyone keeps telling me :)

Actually I don't. That particular mod author is working on a version that tones down the saturation he got a bit carried away but it's still a zillion times better than what Bethesda gave us in the opinion of little old eternally incorrect me.

I'm just trying to appease the peasants. They won't have their king 'Skyrim' dissed by someone who points out the woeful inadequacies nay blindness of the art team from someone who sees much that is hidden 'me'. I am in fact doomed to be correct in all instances. It is a lonely life but I shall bear this burden in the name of, er, He Who Hates Boring Buildings With Stupid Grey Wood Bits. Yes, that's it.

I have my own problems with the architecture in Skyrim, but I don't think they quite match up to the OP's. And a lot of people will probably think I'm just nitpicky.

The thing I don't understand is how you can walk on floors without falling through. There are no joists at all to support the floor decking, and the floor decking is as thin as plywood subflooring, which requires even smaller floor joist spacing than floor decking.

Skyrim is soooooo beautiful, I absolutely [censored] everytime I see a house. Don't even get me started on the water, I was so totally like OMFG is that really water? Oh and the variety, half the time I got confused as to where I was. Truly BREATHTAKING!!!
oh and the variety of enemies, sooo many things to kill. Dragons were just the icing on the cake.
Skyrim is totally THE BEST GAME EVAAAA!!!

Pssshhh.... NOT!!!
this game blows.... HARD!
Did anyone really loose their breath when playing this game?? To say that it had the best design you've ever seen tells me you havnt played many VG lately, did you even think of RAGE??

Go ahead and bash, this game blows.
It's either kill person A or kill person B.
I could care less how the freakn buildings look, as I was too distracted by the endless fetch quests, and stupid ass "go kill those bandits for me" quests.

Skyrim is made for teenagers who can't stand dialoge and just want to shoot everything they see, screaming "GET SOME NEWB, YOU JUST GOT PWNED"
Skyrim=joke...

(can't wait to hear all the reasons I'm wrong)

Your sour graqes do not make, or detract from, anything in this game. There's always a hater, a wet blanket, a killjoy, pick your fasionable monniker. You're a type of community member that finds purpose in telling people how much you dislike things and how bad things are. The game disappointed you, so you vent your negativity online. A veritiable harbinger of gloom. It's very dramatic, and I hope it makes you feel better about yourself but...your meanspiritied opinions are no more or less than just run of the mill opinions, and your confrontational manner really isn't impressive.

You don't like the game. OK, we get it, the fact is noted by all. You have also taken the fact that you don't like it very personally, and that too is noted by everyone

I hate to break it to you, but it isn't just the saturation. It's also the artwork itself that looks cartoony. The vanilla version looks like a real thatched roof, particularly one which has been in place for a while and is worn in. That is realistic detail.

Now if you don't particularly like it, that is fine. Since you are already using a mod to correct what you feel Bethesda got wrong, then you are doing exactly what the mod-ability of Skyrim was designed to allow you to do: experience skyrim as you prefer.

So really, there is nothing more to say in this thread, from my perspective. That mod renders the argument moot...

Your example merely differs by the texture, of which the original vanilla one is superior. If Bethesda had shipped with the same texture as the one presented in that mod, I have no doubt there will be a dozen mods to correct the "ugly-cartoon-playdoo-WOW" texture.

And you would be complaining about that.

the "sixy" Skyrim Mods are horrible, I'm so glad Beth made the houses like they did and not like some caartoonish, over-saturized, unrealistic garbage...

Just my Opinion :)

Indeed that some of Beth textures are low res but the general idea is just right. In other words, the link of the before/after thatch roof is a great example. The vanilla texture resolution isn't that great but it fits perfectly with the environment. The high res texture mod looks out of place almost completely. It looks too clean, neat and not very organic. The color doesn't fit the environment as well.

They look like real [censored] houses that might actually exist and pretty much did at one point in history exist. I'm not sure what you're looking for.
this /\ i was glad to see medieval style buildings/towns, if a little squashed here and there, what is the point of weird for the sake of it, the walled towns have destinct feels that i enjoy. I know in the lore theres alot more 'crazy' but personnely i like my fantasy with a slice of reality. glad the op gave so many examples of what was bad and what would be better it really defined his arguement...

I'm talking about the lazy art design.

I hate to infringe on the valuable time of the building designers (did I just call them designers? ffs....)

Yeah , terrible, no improvements over DOOM , really.... the lack of artistic direction in Skyrim is so bad, isn't it???

Wow, so looks like the OP's actual problem is nothing to do with the design of the buildings, but rather that the thatched roofs have a realistic texture, and therefore EVERY BUILDING IN SKYRIM IS PIG UGLY. It's interesting hearing him compare every building in Skyrim to his garden shed, which is weird because I've never seen a garden shed that looks like http://images.uesp.net/7/79/SR-img-Markarth01.jpg or http://images.uesp.net/5/5e/SR-Place-ProudspireManor_Exterior.jpg or http://images.uesp.net/b/b7/SR-place-Windhelm.jpg . I mean I have a few problems with Skyrim's architecture, namely the fact that there are 11 towns/cities that use the basic "village" template out of a total of 17 towns/cities, but the OPs argument, if it could be called that, just seems ridiculous.

It's all down to choice, if you want to live in a stone coffin then go buy a house in Markarth. If you like living in squallor then Riftens your poison. Personally, I love big sky Whiterun with it's wooden houses.

If it's a castle you want, wait for the mods.
