Can we get an offical apology from Bethesda for the UI?

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 8:40 pm

It's okay just wait for a third party add-on that improves the UI. The PC UI isn't all that bad once you've given in and start using WASD after getting tired of the game always getting your mouse selection wrong :(

UI doesn't respond to mouse clicks = good
UI often thinks you are clicking somewhere where you are not = good
Having to constantly pause the game to swap what is in your hands = good
Lists inside lists inside lists = good

I can't believe you spent so much time typing such a nonsensical post.

Herpderpderp.
I cant believe you spent so little time appreciating my post, since I spent so much effort and time to write it. Regardless it seems that you have little insight in how game development work. Skyrim target audience are console players, that is a fact. It does not excuse or make me forgive them for creating such horrible UI. But at least I can understand why things are the way they are and appreciate the fact that the rest of Skyrim is 1000 times better than oblivion (Weeeeeell, taking aside Perk Levelling system and difficulty scaling).... Still, UI usability is holding me back from purchasing and playing Skyrim.

Again whats done is done and 99% of UI will remain the way it is now. I am very excited to see what kind of action or follow up Bethesda will do with Skyrim. Will they try pull another Bioware atop of broken UI and pump out DLC non stop or address said issues? This will become determinating factor if I will purchase their future product or not. As it stands right now, I will blindly purchase any game CD Project RED or Blizzard (Save for WoW, am not touching that) stand behind, because this companies have superb follow up and support for their released products.

But both CD Project and Blizzard have the luxury to follow-up their games because they have income from other sources. Bethesda have no ultra popular MMO or online store to help their finances and Todd Howard (executive producer of Skyrim) have said himself in an http://www.gamespot.com/events/the-hotspot/video.html?sid=6343995&hd=1&tag=bounce&pid=634491 that they are burning through 1 million dollar a month, they have to have new games all the time.

What UI issues?

I play on the PC and have no problems at all.

Try reading a review, and then try actually playing the game with a PC mouse and keyboard instead of just saying you have. The UI issues aren't some niche thing. They're absolute. The clicking on one option and having another option entirely selected, sometimes it even kicks you out of the menu screen entirely, the input lag with the mouse and countless other issues.

It's not the world's worst UI. However, it does have very real issues. That need fixed. Absolute issues that are now well documented by the professionals, not just random forumites. Pretending that these documented and various issues 'don't exist' doesn't help anyone. So save your, "Works for me, other people's problems don't exist" attitude, it doesn't help anyone. It most especially doesn't help a very good game, with some very real flaws (that do not blemish how great the game is), get those problems solves so everyone can enjoy just how great this game is.

-

Personally I actually like the UI at a base, and once its very real issues are fixed, I'll be perfectly happy to keep using it.

While I agree that the UI is garbage, there's not going to be any apology for it. Short of it somehow causing someone to be injured, I doubt Bethesda will even address it. I'm certainly waiting for the interface mods on this one.

Sadly, I've never even considered interface or HUD mods in TES games.

I agree that they could have use the screen real estate a bit better (squishing the vertical of all the lists), but I strongly disagree with the graphical iconization -- at least, if it removes the text name of the items. I find it rather tedious to go through a graphical inventory to find items, and much prefer the simple list.

Also, I do like half the screen being devoted to the spinning model of the item, tbh.

Those things can all use minor improvement, but it's not like it inherently makes the UI bad. The only thing that makes it bad is the mouse-over desync, which they really need to fix.

I like the "equipped items at the top of the list" though; that would help out a bit, even though I don't find it much of a problem -- I'm not a packrat and I tend not to have my Apparel or Weapons selections scroll off the screen anyways. But, that's incidental -- moving the equipped items to the top is effective in general.

I concur with the idea of moving equipped selections to the top. I also think that they should start short lists high enough on the screen so that they don't run off the bottom. It's silly if the bottom two items in your list run off the screen when there's six inches of empty space at the top.

I'm not saying they should go all the way up, but maybe set the anchor point at the bottom. So... just high enough that we don't have to scroll.

Lastly, I think we really need to split the huge box that is dedicated to looking at a potato into 2 parts, one for looking at the potato, and the other for looking at my character and their equipment. At least for the weapons/apparel sections.

As a thank you to those fans, they slapped them in the face with this god-awful interface that is terribly off-putting to most, and has certainly stopped me from getting into the game.
I agree that the interface is a bit clunky and unintuitive, but seriously, it's not that bad.

Tell you what: all those people wanting an apology should apologise to each other for being so condescending and rude to each other in this thread.
