Combat, To WoW or not WoW, maybe to Morrowind

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 6:15 am

So, DO you think the combat will be like WoW's or do you think we may get Morrowinds (since it's dice based, and is easier to adapt to an online structure)?

I hope we get Morrowinds (best scenario, Skyrims), but I have a nagging feeling we'll see a WoW system, and if so, count me out.

It has to be somewhat like a typical TES game, maybe morrowind mixed with tes4/5. It is TES online afterall.

They can't be THAT stupid to make TES a hotkey/auto-attack system.....i hope.

I realy hope that they resist the temptation to copy WOW both in art style and gameplay.

I realy hope combat remains first person like it's always been. If they do, they will do well as there are no other MMO's that work that way. We don't need stupid auto-attack and ability slots!
Keep true to TES.

I also hope they keep the skills based leveling too. I hate xp based.... it's not very TES like.

Skyrim-esque combat wouldn't work in an MMO. I think we're likely looking at WoW-style combat, since that's the most popular and, let's face it, it works quite well to accommodate people of varying skill levels. Personally, I'd like to see a TERA-esque combat system, designed to be as Elder Scrolls-themed as possible.

TESO should actually have combat like Jade Empire.

It, hopefully (should be), will be action oriented but not as clunky as Morrowind - Skyrim and not dice roll based.

WoW: Hotkey/auto-attack.

Well, they coudln't just keep it with rts combat, that wouldn't even make sense.

I agree, keep it clean and fluid.

Personally I don't mind the autoattack + hotkeys combination, as long as there aren't just 500 hotkeys most of which are useless, and the useful ones are all the same.

It does work and has worked. Darkfall and Mortal Online are both good indicators of that, although they are flawed games in so many other ways.

If it's anything less than full real-time combat a la Skyrim, I'm out.

I think it would work with some tweaks. I think making it like WoW would be a big mistake, the market is flooded with that tired system.

I'm willing to settle for Morrowind as the minimum. Skyrim would be Icing on the cake :D

Dragon Age did a WoW style combat system. I really loved that series, but not for the gameplay. In fact, I absolutely hate that way of combat, it was the story and character development whih made DA one of my favourite series.
If they can do the lore and gameworld well enough, the combat will bother me less.

I agree, the MMO standard combat system is something everyone does, and it gets boring, especially when all the attacks follow you (arrows etc.)

I'm very curious about this myself, especially considering they've been developing the game for a few years now.

"It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years," said game director and MMO veteran Matt Firor

Although I highly doubt they'll aim for a Morrowind combat-style, not only because it's an MMO but also possibly because it's a different studio developing the game (Yes, I know Bethesda and Zenimax Online Studios are both tied to Zenimax Media, itself).

Saying that, do we even know if it'll be a theme park or sandbox MMORPG?

People need to get it out of their heads that this is going to play like a single player game. It's an mmo, and mmo's need to play..like mmo's. If that's not your style, then maybe this *gasp* mmo isn't for you? Deal with it.

The ToR guys said the same thing. And look how that turned out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68VfgesWmcI

Combat is very important.

No, you Play WoW and World of Star Wars :P. You've never played Planet Side then, if you think Hotkey combat is the only way for MMO's to play.

Hotkey combat is the most logical way to play MMO's, and it's the most fluid for PvP. You apparently don't know what you're talking about if you don't play MMO's, but it is the only logical choice for an MMO with multiple spells and abilities. Planet Side is not remotely the same type of MMO as ToR and WoW.

Hot works due to the dice based combat system. And Morrowind used a Dice based combat system. Remember, WoW style combat is from an age when internet connections were not that great. We're past that era. And if Planet Side can do PVP combat forma First Person view back in 2003, with thousands of players on the server, then why couldn't an TES mmo do it?

Also saying:
"You apparently don't know what you're talking about if you don't play MMO's, but it is the only logical choice for an MMO with multiple spells and abilities."

Just makes you seem like a 14 year old who thinks they know everything without providing a logical argument. WoW, and ToR combat is NOT the future, it's stuf that's dated form the 90's.
