I found the driver update for AMD:

I will test it when I get off work and see if it works.

I was getting the same "bex" error and CTD on startup. After installing the AMD hotfix linked above I was able to play the game.

I have the exact same error and am also running a Nvidia. Mine is a GTS 250. Have you tried the http://www.geforce.com/News/articles/nvidia-geforce-280-26-whql-drivers-released?cid=driverrelease_nv_dd? It is hit and miss, for me it wouldnt even load the new drivers. Im still looking for a fix for this...

EDIT: I fixed it. If anyone else is getting the error: wglCreateContextAttribsARB failed when trying to play RAGE from steam and has a Nvidia card here is what I did. Roll back or remove your nvidia drivers for your video card and run the updated drivers 280.26 is what mine was for my GeForce GTS 250 on XP 64bit. You can manually find it on GeForces homepage threw the link I provided above if you have a different card. I have been playing for about 1hr and I havent had any problems or lagging. I do however notice some lines run across the screen every now in then when alot of action is going on but still very playable.

I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 5730 and have the same problem with what I assume to be the newest drivers (Although it seems to be impossible to find an actual driver download page for this video card.)

I can understand your frustration @goninzo, as I also had the CTD on launch problem yesterday.

Day 1 problems on PC games almost always happen. Can't say for an eta for a fix (a LOT of people are already having all kinds of issues with the game) since I don't know what caused any of the issues we're all seeing, but I'd imagine that it'll be in a few days at the longest (hopefully, I've seen games that are still not fixed years afterwards, but I doubt ID and Bethesda would let it go that far).

As far as a refund, you'll have to take that up with Steam support. Good luck with that though.


Well I can honestly say this is the first game AI purchased from Steam that did not start right away. And like others, I installed the ATI Rage drivers and it still CTDs at startup.

I get this every time I try to start the game. I've tried enabling/disabling triple buffering in the CCC but that's not working. Can't believe they released a game this broken at launch.

I have the game on steam as well.

So at first the game wasn't even starting at all. Now I get about 3 seconds into the Bethesda logo screen and Windows tells me that an error has occurred.

I have an i5 with 6 GB o ram and Intel HD Graphics. And before you ask, yes, i have already updated my video card driver.

Any Suggestions?

I had this same error. What worked for me to resolve was a driver update to my vid card. I know you said you've already done that, but was that before or after downloading and attempting to launch the game? I updated afterwards, and am launching now with no errors. Maybe updating after attempting to launch and getting this error helped in the game recognizing the proper Video Memory settings. I was receiving the: "GL_ARB_draw_elements_base_vertex not available" error when attempting to launch though Steam or directly from the .exe in the steamapps folder, but now I can launch from either with no issues. I'm running dual nVidia GTX 260's in SLI and updated to version 280.26 of the firmware. Not sure if my experiance is just a fluke or will help, but thought I'd mention it. Good luck!
I used the new drivers and while they eliminated that specific error, I still can't get to the startup screen without the game freezing.

Had the exact same issue. Turned off OPENGL Triple buffering in AMD CCC and it fixed it.

I cant get driver updates because everytime I try I get this:

This is absolutely unacceptable, i can't believe the amount of broken games that get released these days for the PC. RAGE is just a prime example of this, the game doesn't work worth snot and there is NO way they didn't see this crap in testing, if they even did any testing. Any ways, my game wont even start now, I've done every thing, I've reinstalled drivers, Installed the fix (Both the old one and the new one), ran it with out any fix drivers, reinstalled the game; low and behold it just black screens after the "Bethesda, ID, Zinimax" Intro crap. Then i have to do a ctrl+alt+delete to shut down this broken P.O.S. I really hope they get it fixed, man i really do. Because this is, as my title says, absolutely unacceptable. If any one has any fixes for my problem then by all means tell me, i will be in your debt!

By the way i'm an AMD user, two raided 4870's so i guess maybe this is why the drivers didn't work for me?

I haven't experienced any issues. What kind of systems are you guys running? Given mine is state-of-the-art, it's been nothing but smooth sailing for me. Unbelievable visuals and great gameplay.

Then i have to do a ctrl+alt+delete to shut down this broken P.O.S. I really hope they get it fixed, man i really do. Because this is, as my title says, absolutely unacceptable. If any one has any fixes for my problem then by all means tell me, i will be in your debt!

By the way i'm an AMD user, two raided 4870's so i guess maybe this is why the drivers didn't work for me?

From what I remember Rage isn't supposed to run at Crossfire/SLI at all.

Yeah i tried disabling my second video card and still nothing, i also tried the config that's been posted on the forums and such. This is just frustrating to the core, and no i don't have a horrible computer. It's not the best, but it runs every other game like Crysis 2 and such pretty smoothly.

AMD Phenom II X4 940 3.00GHz
8.00 GB of RAM
Windows 7 64-bit
Two HD 4870's 1024 MB GDDR5.

I hear people running 9800 Gt's running this game just fine
yet on my 9800 GTX+ I have yet to ever get past the intro movies
I've removed the movies still crashes
Installed new 285.35 drivers still crashes
went into safe mode removed all drivers and reinstalled
still crashes
I"m using 2.4gz duo core
9800gtx+ 768mb
4gb ram
I've tried running this in mp, loaded up the legendary mode fine. Though it has the texture slow popping
I"m getting tired of trying to get this game to work and have found no solutions in any
thread with people who have the same problem

Was having a good day, 1 hour till Rage finished downloading, went out and got my hair cut and had a nice breakfast and then i got home...

Rage was installed, unlocked and ready to go.

But it won't even load the game, no intro's, no music. Just a 1 to 2 second black screen and windows says it crashed, doesn't even provide an error report.

So i check the forums, and find the ATI fix, follow all the instructions, remove all my ATI drivers, restart, Install Rage drivers, restart, CRASH. (even got a blue screen during this :wink_smile: )

so here i am, and because i downloaded from steam i can't even say i got an expensive coaster...

Any ideas?? really want to play this game (looks like FO3 on major steroids)

When you said you uninstalled your drivers, you DID reinstall your AMD drivers, right? I believe the RAGE drivers depend on Catalyst.

Beyond that, try the fixes in the stickied thread at the top of the forum. A lot of people are getting crashes like this.

of course i reinstalled my Drivers, and i always keep my drivers fully up to date.
