Crash on Startup Issues

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 4:10 am

I use an ATI Radeon graphics card, and RAGE used to crash on startup.

If you go into device manager, and uninstall your graphics driver. Go to the AMD website and download Catalyst 11.9 and restart you computer, it may or may not help.

I was stuck on 11.2, after I updated it worked like a charm. (Until RAGE was too much for my computer and took up all the cpu and lagged like crazy.)

Its a Vsync issue, i had the same problem and posted about it earlier. you have to Enable Vsync to On Unless specified by Application. The Game will run fine after that. Just enable VSync in the game options. you will have a 50/50 chance of crashing the game if you enable SMART Vsync.

I used the same CCC settings as Brokenninja but the game would crash after the intro unless I turned vsync off in the game settings.

Crash on start up here as well, before the patch i could get into the game and have squares, right after the patch same thing, then i tried to fix settings and it wouldn't get passed the part when project eden comes up on the screen, so i reinstalled, and now it won't load at all, immediate crash.

I was getting an immediate crash on start up. I uninstalled Catalyst Control Center, restarted, and reinstalled, along with the Rage performance drivers. I was able to get to the main menu. I start a new game and it crashes after the intro asteroid video.

I really hope they do something about this soon, this is what happens when you "could of" made a better product, but decided to do it the way that would make it easier, instead of taking the time to perfect it, then do the proper transposing of systems. But it is 2011 after, being pathetic and lazy is the norm. Anyway, theres my little mini rant, has there been any developments with this crashing issue, I've tried everything set to where it was including config files and all that jazz before I reinstalled it, after the patch, and nothing works, at all, total crash on start up, nothing fixes it.

Ok, so I got the game to go as far as the opening video again, then as soon as the words "project eden" start to come up it freezes for a couple seconds, then runs for half the time. That being said, I got passed the crash on start up by disabling catalyst again, and putting in this config file.

After searching the web I have found a lot of people complaining about the same crash info.:
GL_ARB_draw_elements_base_vertex not available

My laptop is using a nVidia GeForce 330M video card not an ATI, and the drivers installed do not use this Catalyst Control Center like ATI cards... Driver manipulation like disabling Triple Buffering is available with the nVidia Control Panel under Manage 3D Settings which is already turned off. Antialasing Mode and Anisotropic Filtering: Were both set to Application-controlled so I turned them both off. I turned basically everything off and set it to single display mode but NOTHING WORKS.
With all the other new release type games that I've played on this Laptop which by the way are quite a few; I've never ever once had to make changes in this NVIDIA Control Panel, Manage 3D Settings section. If changes were needed by the application/game then the application/game would provide a VIDEO Configuration sections where these changes would be applied. Hence Application-Controlled. This game is B.S. in my opinion.

NVIDIA Control Panel, Manage 3D Settings (Default Settings) are:
Ambient Occlusion: Off
Anisotropic filtering: Application-controlled
Antialasing - Gamma correction: On
Antialasing - Mode: Application-controlled
Antialasing - Settings: Application-controlled (greyed out.. not changeable)
Antialasing - Transparency: Off
Conformant texture clamp: Use hardware
Error reporting: Off
Extension limit: Off
Force mipmaps: None
Max pre-rendered frames: 3
Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration: Multiple display performance mode
Texture filtering - Anisotropic sample opti...: Off
Texture filtering - Negative LOD bias: Allow
Texture filtering - Quality: Quality
Texture filtering - Trilnear optimization: On
Threaded optimization: Auto
Triple buffering: Off
Vertical sync: Use the 3D application setting

Anyone else with this same issue.... Crash at startup.

I installed the Rage Update, but the Problem Still is the Same.

Someone on this site said to disable "Switchable" graphics.
If I go into the BIOS and change Graphics Mode from Switchable to Discrete, When I log back into Win7 x64 Pre. my graphics display adapter also changes from:
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M
and Adapter Info. of:
Chip Type: GeForce GT 330M, DAC Type: Integrated RAMDAC, Adapter String: GeForce GT 330M... Total Available Graphics Memory: 2171MB, Dedicated Video Memory: 1024MB

to:
Standard VGA Graphics Adapter
and Adapter Info. becomes this; Chip Type: NVIDIA, DAC Type: 8 bit, Adapter String: VGA... Total Available Graphics Memory: 14MB.... Also display resolution changes from 1366x768 to 800x600 with max. adj. to 1024x768.

When I launch the game. It shows as a running task in task manager, but then closes automatically (of course) without presenting any errors.

Under Rage Support I found this:
NVIDIA Graphics Cards

Download R285 drivers here:
Win7-64b: http://www.nvidia.co...eta-driver.html
BUT THIS IS FOR DESKTOP NVIDIA GRAPIC CARDS ONLY.

About insalling the NVIDIA Graphics Driver v285.38:
This is a Laptop NOT a Desktop; The Graphics Card is a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M with 1GB of ram.
When I try to install 285.38-desktop-win7-winvista-64bit-english-beta.exe I get this:
NVIDIA Installer cannot Continue
This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware.

All my drivers are up to date and work fine. I've played a whole wack of other newer release type games on this computer without any such problems; If I had any problems with other games it would most probably have something to do with the games default resolution not being compatible with my monitor, where I would end up having to somehow change this resolution in some sort of configuration files for the game.

This game is a nightmare for those who wish to play it on a LAPTOP with a NVIDIA Graphics Card.

Any other suggestions are most welcome.

finally got the game running by updating again to the latest nvidia driver

after installing the patch:
1. do a clean driver install http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=169555
2.http://www.geforce.com/News/articles/how-to-unlock-rages-high-resolution-textures-with-a-few-simple-tweaks
3.don't set AA over 4x or u will get screen tearing
4.make sure that all settings in nvidia control panel are set to default

now i get almost no screen tearing and good fps but game freezes sometimes for 5 secs +some low textures...

The problem with this game is that it should have a Launcher.exe that someone like I should be able to run if after Rage.exe is launched and the game errors out on them.
This Launcher.exe will first enable the person to select a language to be used and then it should open into an options configuration format for game play, where the person can then select what video/audio/controller options are to be applied. When the Launcher is closed the game should automatically start and a configuration file for game setttings should also be saved and later access for manual manipulation or any further game play where Rage.exe could now be used to start the game.

As for the person who just posted prior to this. I'm not going to mess with my Video Drivers... They are upto date... They Work fine as I previously posted I've played many of games on this Laptop without any issues..... The problem here is not my Drivers but this game and the fact that it simply doesn't open.... At least to the point of being able to get to the Settings Screen of this game.... Where I should be able to make my Video Configurations changes....

Having the same problem here.....I am also using a laptop but an ATI card (Radeon 6490m 1gb) and I have tried all possible solutions....Many other new released games such as witcher 2 work fine on my laptop so it cant be my laptop's fault.

I have played PC games for more than 10 years and I have never experience such ridiculous situation before....cant even launch the game!!! If there are so many bugs they shouldnt have launched the game in the first place, This is such a joke for a big game like this.

Game is working now and it is GORGEOUS!

My original system was running Windows Vista with a Geforce 9800 GT Card.

Upgraded OS to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, bought a new video card (GTX460) and installed the Nvidia beta drivers.

I was amazed after watching the crashing asteroid for 30 or 40 times to finally see it get past that and could start to play. I have anti-aliasing at 16x and running at 1600x1280 resolution and it looks AMAZING! Best graphics I've ever seen in a game.. I am still seeing occasional screen tears... but other than that game is AWESOME.

It really pisses me off that the game wouldn't even load with the 9800 GT card in Vista.. especially since that card is listed on the box as the minimum requirement.. AND it should run in Vista, but I needed to upgrade anyway.. nothing like a video game to push hardware and OS upgrades, right? Maybe ID has a deal with Microsoft??? (any conspiracy theorists out there?)

Anyway, hope this helps..

Good Luck!

Yup, it worked the first time I loaded it after creating the folder. It looked terrible though. Then on restarting, it failed. :( The patch seems to have done the trick - I can run it now. Textures are still a little ropey mind you.

I created this folder. It didn't fix anything for me. Are you sure that all you did was create the folder?

I got myself a copy of RAGE, and I'm having a problem with Rage.. Whenever I start up RAGE, I instantly get a message on a black screen that says "Rage has stopped working." and searches for a solution (obviously, it does nothing). I have uninstalled and re-installed the game two times and it still gave me the same error. I also looked around forums and tried different things, but nothing was working. Does anyone know a solution to my problem??

My CPU specs: i5-2540M CPU @ 2.60GHz. 8GB RAM. AMD FirePro M5950 Mobility Professional Graphics Card.

If you need any other specs, I can provide you with that information.

Not sure if its similar or related but I too have a Mobility model card from AMD and had trouble launching although my symptoms were different, I posted problem & solution here: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1238809-error-on-launch-gl-arb-draw-elements-base-vertex-not-available/page__p__18783567__fromsearch__1#entry18783567

So like almost everyone i have problems since day 1 with rage.
The first time game runs fine, no breaks , no crashes... aside the texture pop-up and the flickering and some stuff that i don't even know what call that, like random triangles appearing out of nowhere, it was good, if you can call that. But like everyone else who likes to play games that's annoying and takes all the fun away.

In an attempt to fix i installed patch 1 and AMD Catalyst? 11.10 Version 2 Preview Driver. Now it's even worst because i can't even start it. Just get a black screen and have to alt+tab to get a "rage.exe stooped working" thing.
Then read somewhere were to add this lines "+set com_skipIntroVideo 1 +cvaradd jobs_numThreads 0 +vt_maxPPF 8" , tested it and the game starts but crashes if i try to change anything in video options and cant load or start a new game as i get the same black screen. :swear:

Any idea how to fix this is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

System:

MS windows 7 ultimate 64-bit sp1
Intel core i5-2500 cpu @ 3,30GHz
4,0 GB Ram
AMD Radeon HD 6870 DirectCU 1GB DDR5

Agreed... It doesn't even seem as though they tested it. So many problems just to get it started and this not for just one type of card, its both... ATI and NVIDIA.
Now most ATI cards work to get the game started but some still have problems. And they have major problems with NVIDIA cards.

This game shouldn't have even been put on the market as far as I'm concerned..... The company didn't even test it as far as I can see.... Their trying to figuring this all out now... It should have been done prior to the games release.... Updating and/or degrating Video Drivers is B.S....

bsuifc are you running WinXP or Win7?
Did you try lates amd_catalyst_11.10_preview2_winxp.exe (I think there's also another one for Win7)?

Game crashes at launch, windows saying Data Execution Prevention shutdown game.

I have AMD Radeon HD 6770 with the newest catalyst 11.10 drivers; windows vista 64

The gamne cannot be added to the exception list for DEP.

Is there a fix for this?

Yes, there is. You can turn off DEP in Windows XP/ win 7 by doing the following:

1. Click Start
2. Select Control Panel
3. Select System
4. Click the Advanced tab
5. In the Performance region select Settings
6. Click the Data Execute tab in the dialog box that opens
7. Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except for those I select and set it to not allow for that program.

If that does not work, you can completely shut off the DEP service from boot by editing your boot.ini (win xp only) and setting the "noexecute" string to ALWAYSOFF, see below for description of each switch.

/NOEXECUTE=OPTIN
Optin enables Data Execution Prevention for core system images and those specified in the DEP configuration dialog. Optin enables DEP only for operating system components, including the Windows kernel and drivers. Administrators can enable DEP on selected executable files. This is the Windows default setting.

/NOEXECUTE=OPTOUT
Optout enables Data Execution Prevention for all images, operating system and all processes except those specified in the DEP configuration dialog (System in Control Panel).

/NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSON
Alwayson enables DEP on all images. This option enables DEP for the operating system and all processes. This includes the Windows kernel and drivers. All attempts to disable DEP will be ignored.

/NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF
Alwaysoff disables Data Execution Prevention (DEP) completely. Attempts to enable DEP selectively will be ignored. On Windows XP with SP2, this subparameter also disables Physical Address Extension (PAE). This switch does not disable PAE on Windows Server 2003 with SP1

My NEW retail copy of RAGE will not run. Nothing. Just a spinning cursor. I verified the game cache integrity and it said 1 file failed to validate and would be reacquired. But nothing happened. I reinstalled it and verified the game cache before I started to play and the same thing. This time when it starts, I get a brief 1 second sound from the game and then nothing.

I have no idea how to find out which file is the problem and if I can even install it.

Any ideas? This game will be going back to the store for a refund this weekend if it won't run.

Thanks.

This does not work, as I stated in my post, rage.exe cannot be added to the exception list. And thanks for the winXP tips, but again, as I stated I am running Vista.
