Dark Souls discussion. Thread #23

Yeah your very right on one thing. Dark Souls NEEDS a controller. The port was very crappy, but was easily fixed. The only thing that wasn't fix was the ability to effectively play without a controller. In my opinion the only way to enjoy the game is to play it with a controller.

I hadn't played Dark Souls so can't say too much but I did heard one thing about the game that I didn't like too much and it is basicly the limited world... Like you gotta do the questline to unlock more areas and such.

Correct me if I've been told wrong please.

For the record, I knew before buying that a controller was highly suggested, but I couldn't let that pretty looking $10 price tag from the Steam Summer Sale get away from me :P

Yeah some areas you have to wait to get to, but I don't think that is any different from Skyrim. A lot of areas you have to wait to get to because you haven't started a quest, or progressed long enough into it.

One of my biggest gripes when I first started playing. A lot of key aspects, like a few Dragon Shouts, are not available unless you join a guild/civil war that has a quest locked dungeon containing that shout. Also, I ran into a lot of dungeons that broke quest lines because apparently I am supposed to know that I am to speak to this person first...

I think this is the only part where I disagree with you. You're judging Skyrim's main plot against Dark Souls lore and world-building, which honestly I don't think comes close to TES lore at all (a lot of which Skyrim has, Morrowind wasn't the only lore intensive TES game). And if we're counting in watching lore videos for DS, then we should be able to count wikis and lore videos for Skyrim, which just makes Skyrim come out even higher in this regard.

Basically, if you're going to judge them both on story, then judge them both on story. If it's lore and world building, then judge them both on lore and world building. It's unfair to compare Skyrim's main questline with Dark Souls' entire lore, which is what you seem to be doing. Everything else I practically agree with, though. I mean, I'm not a fan of Dark Souls combat personally, but anything is better than TES combat lol.

Lets also not forget the ending to Dark Souls was helluva ton more epic, despite the final boss not being treated like a giant epic monster of OMGWTFBBQAWESOMESAUCEPWNKEWL!

The game is quite dark and sad, and any goodness tends to be dashed. I think there is only 1 good ending to come out of this game, but at the same time, it's extremely fitting and makes everything building to the point towards the end game all that more powerful and meaningful.

Tbh. I kinda like TES's simple combat systems at time...

I think Skyrim's combat was a huge improvement for the series IMO

Btw, why was my post deleted? All I did was ask a question...

The threads have been merged.
We don't really need more than one DS thread

Morrowind has infinetly better lore than Dark Souls, and a hell of a lot more of it.

I would say Dark Souls has better gameplay and is much more consistent with its lore.

Keep in mind I will agree all day that Dark Souls is a better game than Skyrim, however Dark Souls truly has nothing on Elder Scrolls lore. As an avid follower of both gameworld's lore, there is no comparison. It isn't even a debate. If you invest the same amount of effort into learning Dark Souls obscure lore, you can do the same with TES to better results. There is so kuch and so much of it is of good quality. The metaphysics, politics, characters and setting are just so much more interesting in TES. Not one character in Dark Souls can compare to a character like Vivec.

I love Dark Souls, but if you know both gameworlds and their lore in and out you will realize they are on entirely different levels, which is entirely understandable considering it is like ten games compared to one. Although only like 6 of the games have a lot of world building in them.

Dark Souls wins for art direction imo, except against Morrowind. Morrowind wins there for me.
