Delphine, you've ruined the Blades for me

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 6:22 am

I really liked the Greybeards because Arngeir gets all pissed off and gets stubborn and refuses to help you just like Esbern and Delphine, but a few seconds later he apologizes and understands it was wrong of him to act like that. That's one thing they have over the Blades. If Delphine wants to kill Paarthurnax because he helped Alduin a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, then I should kill Delphine and Esbern for being Akaviri invaders, enemies to Reman Cyrodiil.

a thousand times yes....argh i really wish they had stayed true to the lore of the blades, WHY o WHY couldnt we just had a disagreement and a compromise on something EVERY dragonborn thye served under forbade them to do. I was soooooooo looking forward to having my own blade bodyguards/army......."sad panda face"

they dhoulda been all pissed off and then told me that even though they think im an idiot for letting him live, they are there to protect u and if he does become a problem to tell me "i told you so", BUT they would still follow and protect me since they have been waiting for 200 years or so for the dragonborn and even though i may decide to let ONE.....well TWO dragons live because one is such a sweet ride I so see myself riding it and head banging with freaking http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UW7EnixZVNI&feature=BFa&list=FLWOnDZ8VWdK1bB1gbtAfAjw&lf=plpp_video playing in the background. ow wells, hopefully the CK will let us rewrite and correct broken and lore breaking quests.

You don't play a leadership role in the blades. You're a pawn.

You might be, because you failed to kill Pathnx.

Every faction requires you to prove yourself as a leader and this is merely just one of them. Prejudices aside, Pathnx is a dragon & a criminal one at that.

Oh-crap they do. Have you tried killing Pathnx? See what Argneir is like then.

The UESP wiki says this as well, that Alduin is the son of Akatosh and so is Parthurnaxx. The wiki does say, however, that this is often metaphorical and not literal - it might just be saying that Akatosh created Alduin and Parthurnaxx.

In TES, being descended from a god and being an aspect of that god are basically the same thing. When the world was created, Lorkhan and the Aedra were split, and became the mortal races. Lorkhan became men, most of the Aedra became Mer, and Akatosh became Dovah. Since dragons are truly immortal, capable of living forever if not slain, dragons are unique in that the "first generation" still survives. Alduin is the first dragon to appear on Nirn, possessed of the largest part of Akatosh's divine spark, and the closest thing to a living Aedra which exists in Mundus.

The main problem for our PC Dragonborn, seems to be their lack of political capital. Reman was a great emperor-general who originally gained the fealty of the Akaviri invaders (predecessors of the Blades), and Tiber, later on, was a great emperor-general-come Godhead.

Who was also a Dragon-Hugger.

And the Blades said, "Oh, OK. If you insist."

But, our little Player Character enjoys none of that, despite being every bit as Dragonborn and Thu'um-versed as these previous 2...

In an expansion, I'd like to see our PC crowned as Emperor, or High King/Queen of Skyrim, or something. And why not? You're Dragonborn, you defeated Alduin, basically saving everyone and everything... and your participation in the civil war (for one side or the other) was pivotal.

It's time for folks to RECOGNIZE.

I don't think that the PC rising to such heights would really be unprecendented. The CoC is recognized as having mantled divinity as Sheogorath, after all.

I'm not even talking about becoming divine... All I'm talking about is gaining political capital. Like the Dragonborn that came before the PC.

Maybe then, the Blades (the entire fearsome 2 of them!) would step in line.

I doubt it. It was after all the empire that made them what they are now, just a small reminence of what they use to be. They'll probably be forgotten once all the dragons are extinct.

I really don't like Delphine at all. She even had the NERVE to say that if she was an enemy, I'd be dead already. WUT??? You are a rogue Blade, running an Inn.

You're thinking too much like the "player" (i.e. you). In the game's conditions, she's a 55 year old war veteran, who's survived a great war, and a hunting down of her order, probably killed dozens of thalmor mages and warriors, has lost all of her friends, and if it wasn't for her tough attitude, might have lost her mind already. You can't blame a character like this for being abrasive and confident. It gives her.. umm.. "character".

Not to say you couldn't kill her, but it's just crappy writing if everyone kissed your butt and had no sense of confidence in themselves. You never read novels or see movies where the protagonist is treated instantly like a god and recognized for everything they're capable of. Every good protagonist has a foil or someone who doesn't have that much faith in them. Sometimes they become friends later. For example, I just watched that latest Captain America movie. It wasn't until the end that Tommy Lee Jones (the old military commander) saw that the Captain wasn't a joke. Before that point, he makes fun of him throughout the movie. It's just supposed to make things interesting. I don't know why gamers can't handle it though.

It's the difference between obnoxiously threatening someone who could very well destroy you, and actually being able to follow through with the boast. I don't mind that there are confident NPCs around for example, but if they are going to be all uppity in my character's face, I expect them to be able to follow through in some form, otherwise their claims and threats remain empty and transparent...bordering on pretentious and suicidal.

She's not pretentious and suicidal, if the writers don't want her to be. We don't know if she's really pretentious or not. They could make her into a tough boss battle, for all we know.

Besides, she apologizes in Kynesgrove after seeing you in action. She's not afraid to say she's sorry either. But you guys want to forget this, and make that other encounter some unforgiveable offense or something. The same people who go on and on about forgiveness when it comes to Paarthurnax. I don't even know how to make sense of that. lol

I'm not talking of her specifically, I meant NPCs in general who behave that way.

Lot of people sound like they can't take a rejection from a lady. Condition is set, do it or leave it. Seriously, most you're just complaining about how you can't join the coolest faction in the history of TES, because you let your morals get in the way.

Which is odd - since the previous TES games should have made it very clear the Blades are anything BUT paladin types.

To continue on this thread's theme of ad hominems: I understand that some people think the Blades are the bestest thing evah and correct about everything since they're carrying katanas, but just consider this for a moment:

Paarthurnax is the reason why humans have freedom in the first place. He taught them the use of thu'um, so they could fight the dragons. Every single dragon was a servant of Alduin at first, until Paarthurnax grew ethics. He just helped save the Mundus for the 2nd time, and the Blades want to kill him?

I thought it was Kyne who took pity on the Nords and gave them the gift of the Thu'um.

Like with much ingame lore, there seems to be two versions of how the Nords got Thu'um. However, if it was a gift by Kynareth, why are all the shouts in the dragon tongue?

Here's http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Paarthurnax, which mentions him teaching Thu'um to humans.

Kynareth also has no connection to the dragons in the lore, which makes me suspect that the story about Kynareth and the Voice was a later rationalization by the Nords who wanted to forget that such an useful power originated from the hated dragons.

He's basing his conclusion on what's written on those stone tablets on the path up to High Hrothgar - which you can either accept as gospel truth, or dismiss as blatent propaganda.

Edit:

There is a logical explanation in the lore: The dragons had cults devoted to them, some of which followers were taught the Thu'um (dragon priests). One book even speculates that the Dragon Wars were started by the dragon priests themselves. There is also another book that hints that Paarthanaax's motives for turning against Alduin were far from altruistic.

You're willing to dismiss the stone tablets, but trust the books, even though the Devs themselves have said that the ingame books have been touched by the dreaded "Unreliable Narrator"? I'm not saying that the stone tablets are any more trustworthy, but there seems to be some picking and choosing going on here.

And despite what you might think of Paarthurnax's past actions, the guy just helped save millions of people. Might be appropriate to give him a break.

And there's a problem with that? Either way, you have to choose what you believe. Bethesda leaves it entirely up to the player, and to their credit, imposes actual consequences (weak as they are) for choosing where you stand. I really don't see a problem with the Blades turning their backs on you once you reveal you're not in their court, and vice versa for the Greybeards.

I choose to believe what I saw myself. Alduin makes it very clear in the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gysg554w5Vk, that he considers getting hit by Dragonrend as Paarthurnax's doing.

if you really think about it they did stay true to the lore, just the lore of their predicessors. delphine brobably do sent much know how the blades were 200 years ago and although esbeern is obsessed with their history it seems he really only cared about their dragonguard origins. so delphine is just trying to rebuild the blades the way she thinks they were because that's all she knows.

as I have said it is a running theme for people to to be forgetting their traditions like the DB and the night mother so it kinda fits with the overall theme of alot of the guilds.
