Disappointed in the soundtrack for Fallout: New Vegas

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 8:16 am

This makes me laugh, as much as I actually agree with you. I just find it funny how all people did was complain about GNR and ThreeDog before but now NV is out...

I did like how they squeezed music from all the Fallouts in there but' it's nothing new, You can hear bits of Fallout 1 music mixed in quietly on Fallout 3.

The radio svcks though, I don't like Mr. New Vegas he's got an awful voice and a speech problem by the sounds of it and there's only about 5 songs on their of which 2 repeat oen after the other....

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with the songs but' I wouldn't have tired of them so quickly, if at all, if they put a full track listing on.

He use to have a pretty amazing voice but after singing a few (20+?) thousand shows there's pretty much nothing left.

Another complaint about Wayne Newton's charcter: quit trying to make love to me over the radio!

Yeah, it's bit creepy, even for my female character...

Impressions on the soundtrack:

I generally enjoyed the soundtrack, though some of the theme didn't do it for me as it did in Oblivion and Fallout2/3. The battle music is the stuff I had the most issues with, it's very strange and not "energetic" like Battle06 was from Fallout3. Battle06 is my favorite of all Inon's battle music, and F:NV took him in another direction it seems. However aside from the battle music I was much more impressed by the location and exploration tracks, nice variety and different in each town/city that definitely adds character to every place.

In a more personal observation, something about this music is less "from the heart" and more "engineered" than Fallout3. After watching the Making Of FNV disc and listening to Inon talk about the experience makes me think that he was very much under pressure with making this track and very much micro-managed during the process. What he describes as (I'm paraphrasing here) "having to make new pieces every day and submit them all for review on a day-by-day basis and that the pressure was high". This is not the way an artist should create music IMHO, but he seems to think it works for him. Mark Morgan's tracks are so very different and distinct that I can immediately tell he did that on his own OR that he had the right time/conditions to make it from the heart, where the tracks for New Vegas are much more similar to one another with less variance that I heard in Fallout3 (again this is just my artistic impressions from what I hear and saw in the interviews).

What is definitely more Advanced about this soundtrack is that there are 3 versions for just about every background song - a Low, Medium and High version. I recall them mentioning this in the Making Of New Vegas CD in the CE, and definitely notice in-game that often times the music will "build" from the low to medium or medium to high as I approach an area. The idea must have been to build on the mood as a player approach a new area, and for the most part it works pretty good IMHO. So unlike Fallout3 and Oblivion, New Vegas adds additional "delivery" technology to the game to try and control the transition from track to track and make the music more Smoothly flowing. I have not seen this before, its a nice touch.

What's nice for peeps like me that listen to the sound-track out of game (while modding or working), this is nice as I was able to select from the low, medium and high variants of the songs as to which ones I wanted to put into playlist. I can literally get a different mood by combining the low or medium or high songs into single playlists, but I find a mixture of low/medium versions hits the right tones for me. All in all I give this one a 6/7 out of 10, higher without the battle music.

Impressions on the Radio Tracks:

I think they did a good job of picking tracks for the radio overall, really enjoyed some of the signature songs like Blue Moon and also the home-spun songs! Listening to an old song and suddenly realize that he's singing about Brahman and the wasteland really adds to the immersion IMHO - another nice touch.

I do have to agree though that Mr. New Vegas isn't very fun or entertaining to listen to, and his style of commentary seemed to fit a more depressive mood. As was mentioned by another commenter, I have Infinite respect for him and his unique voice, but it's not "light" listening and he does talk at me a whole lot more than a good radio announcer should. Next to Three-Dog's Charisma, I unfortunately didn't find that I enjoyed having the radio on in-game and unfortunately almost never listen to it in-game now. I do listen to the tracks from the radio while modding and working though, so I'm getting the experience, just not as something inside the game.

Once the radio makes it's rounds a couple of times I'm sick of the playlist.. I spent most of F3 listening to the ambient music.. as I'm doing in F:nv.. I love the ambient music.. I'm especially happy that the old ambient tunes from F1/F2 and tactics are in here. Really makes it feel like fallout in my mind. I hear enough of the radio inside explorable areas to hear the "news" and that's all I really care about hearing. The radio adds a nice ambiance when exploring areas and the radio is on in those areas. But as for listening to it through my pip-boy I' just don't.

I don't like most of the music that plays on the radio, but I do love the default music. I don't see why everyone is complaining about the radio music. How about just not listening to them? The ambient music is context-sensitive and suits the game much better.

Just download the RACE Radio mod over on nexus and you can hear up to 250 of your own songs...(or in my case...CONELRAD and the original Fallout 3 sound track)

are you all serious?!? not only did we get like twice as many radio stations, dj dialogue and music but the background music is different for every single area and some of it is from the original games!

not to mention I still have my custom radio station to listen to on my 360 while I explore (which I still havent 'tuned' into...).

you make me sad...

I find the Radio ingame alright. The Radio host is practically indifferent when announcing the event in game as to compare to Three Dog's announcement saying Lyons' Pride is good and Enclave bad. The selection of music fit the theme of the game overall. I have my radio on 24/7, so I did not hear the wilderness soundtrack, yet.

I like most of the tracks, though some are severely underplayed where as Johnny Guitar and Big Iron or w/e are played all the time. And everytime I hear Mr.Vega's voice I think: throat cancer. I hate him.

It has grown on me, but when compared to Fallout 3, it is unable to hold its own. Good thing they made up for it in some other small areas, like character dialog, which is far superior to FO3.

We didn't get twice as many radio stations... what gave you that impression?

If we're just counting 'music' radio stations:

Fallout 3:
Enclave Radio - 8 unique songs, unique DJ
Galaxy News Radio (GNR) - 20 unique songs, unique DJ, audio drama, level based news/reports (Daring Dashwood)
Agatha's Station (minor station) - 5 unique songs and unique DJ

Fallout: New Vegas:
Black mountain radio - unique DJ, same music as New Vegas radio as far as I can tell
Mojave radio - No DJ, same music as New Vegas radio
New Vegas radio - Unique DJ, 26 songs? (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Fallout:_New_Vegas_songs)

All three stations seem to play the same music.

Maybe they'll add some more crusty songs in a patch? At least there's no Three Dog in this game.

p.s. Fallout 1 and 2 ambient music - hell yeah

The songs are great, but the stations themselves are meh.

There's even less songs per station than there were in FO3, it seems, and the DJs have WAY less to say. Three Dog got repetitive, but because he would comment on everything throughout the course of the game he would end up with quite a few more lines than Mr. New Vegas has at the moment.

Also, Three Dog is excellent. :D

In short:
Radio needs more songs, and less repetitive DJs.

The music in New Vegas isn't horrible for the most part. I'm not a huge fan of country, old or new, with the exception of J. Cash. I love the ratpack style of music, but I find it ridiculously funny when people say 'The music fits the Era.' The Era...is 2081(ish), not the 1950's. By that sort of logic, mankind should probably be listening to techno that is broadcast only in Morse Code.

Well.. I DO admit there aren't many songs. But there are three stations I listen to.. two of which play different typs of songs. One, plays the country stuff.. ya'know.. and then there's another which plays the 'blues' and Vegas tunes. While, Black Mountain radio play both. I AM dissapointed with the amount of songs, but the ones they chose are spectacular (To me).
Another reason there may seem like less is because the different genres set into different chanels. If they were mixed together, and the deck was shuffled a bit, It would probably sound better then all of Fallout 3's selection.

EDIT: Maybe it's just my game.. but only Radio New Vegas plays the Rat-pack stuff. And Mojave station only plays Country..

In terms of DJs I didn't like three dog.

However I absolutely hate Mr New Vegas. His voice is grating and his writing is the worst offender in the otherwise brilliant writing in this game. Also he is creeeepy, hopefully I will be able to kill him like I did three dog . . .

I'm sick of listening to big iron every time I listen to the radio. I can't believe they let something as bad as repeating songs into the game. It's like theres only 3 radio songs in the whole entire game.

Saw Wayne in (Real) Vegas a few years ago, no real reason other than he's a Vegas legend and that's one of the things you do in that town. His voice is completely shot, and he doesn't sing so much as croak and half speak to his songs in short snippets. None of the blue hairs seem to care one bit; they loved every second.

I don't have a problem with the F:NV play list, its that the selection is a bit anemic. I'd been playing F03 with the extended song list mod for so long that I've forgotten how repetitive a small play list can get.

You people do know that the radio new vegas playlist is bugged im looking in the data for new vegas right now and theres 50 songs for NVR alone the fact that only about 6 of them play over and over is a confirmed bug its not that they dont have more music its just that that music doesnt play.

There arnt anywhere near 50 songs for NVR. There are 12 set to play with about 7 others for certain events and scenarios within the game that are not intended to be used with NVR. NVR is poor compared to GNR. It has less songs, they are weighted poorly, even the news broadcasts are more repetitive and there is no show like Dashwood. GNR had a lot more content.

Thank you, I definitely agree with this. Having radio content is fantastic. More songs and more news/updates/diversity makes the game world feel more "alive" and persistent. Like the radio can be semi-fresh, even 30 hours into the game.

Fallout 4 should spend some of the voice acting budget to get Morgan Freeman on the radio. :P That's better than any ambient/radio music. He could just read the instruction manual.
