Thing i was scared about is actually true. Skyrim's combat is fairly disappointing guys. Read this:

http://www.hookedgamers.com/blogs/chrispriestman/2011/10/31/skyrims_combat_may_not_be_good_enough_for_todays_standard.html

Oh my god. :tes: has NEVER been about combat!

The fact that it's half-decent is awesome!

EDIT: Not to mention that the whole article is fence-sitting saying, now if this is true, and the title is 'Skyrim's Combat May Not Be Good Enough For Today's Standards'

The fact that the article talks about the leaked footage makes this topic against the rules.

Well what about if you want to be an aggressive, stylish warrior with good looking combat like myself here... I love to be face to face melee combat man!

I'm sorry, I don't know you, so don't take this personally, but that statement is pathetic.

Lovin' the flamebait, but really - care to explain, or just prod?

Edit: Ragnarok, read the previous edit. It's unlikely that the combat system is that bad. They've got one complaint, that the hits don't register in the video snippet that was taken down. And in the combat of TES, hits don't always register, but they frequently do.

Why does everyone quote this this like some kind of holy mantra? I admit I never played anything prior to morrowind but 90% of my time in morrowind was killing people and creatures. So can you please explain to me what TES is all about if it's not killing everything that moves outside of a city?

We, as far as Ive understood it, have expected a similar comabt system to the previous games so I don't see the problem. I'm not going to let the fact that ACTION-RPGs have more realistic combat ruin my experience with Skyrim. Also most of us do not know how the combat feels yet. It might feel really good for all we know.

Various hands-on impressions:

"Without a doubt, combat’s more visceral this time around"

"The hit-detection, sound and weight of melee combat feel great. As someone who never loved Oblivion due to its combat, this is somewhat of a revelation"

"Combat works very well in Skyrim, but it doesn’t feel as sluggish as Oblivion."

"Skyrim’s combat is visceral and brutal. Swordplay is vastly improved; You now feel like you’re actually hitting your enemies."

"Though only a small area, replete with six brigands packing various melee and ranged weaponry, the mine gave a good taste of how combat feels in Skyrim – and it’s reassuringly chunky and brutal. "

Why are people acting like this is news? We saw the exact same combat in E3 videos. It looks like Oblivion's combat but slightly less crappy.

What's really dumb is that if they just added some basic recoil animations via their fancy new animation blending system then people wouldn't be complaining.

I think this is our answer, my fellow forum lurkers.

There is no bait, I assure you. My only thought here is not to settle for something substandard.

No it's not. TES is not about combat.

well to be fair the guy/gal playing in that footage wsa an utter tool when it came to playing the game!
he just seemed to be button mashing or simply incapable of thinking about the combat or how to enter it for the best results. what im trying to say is that he wasnt playing it like any of us probably will...which will be methodical and thought through...we will block, we will dodge, we will sneak attack and flank etc etc
wait until you see that type of thing in action and then draw your judgements! as it stands youve only seen the game in the hands of a very unskilled muppet who quite frankly could make even the best combat systems look like something out of the zx spectrum days! :toughninja:

I can see how you'd take it like that, but I doubt the combat is substandard, at least from what we've seen. Not to mention that combat, though prevalent throughout the game, is only one aspect of it.

So reiterating my original point, TES has never been solely about combat. So the fact that there is a decent system implemented makes me excited.

If it's anything like Oblivion, then it'll be nothing more than an dumbed down adventure game centered around combat, and if the combat svcks, then this game will flop.

I think what people actually want is not just better recoil animations, but better hit detection and connection of attacks. Too many time would I do a heavy charge in Oblivion, connect with the NPC, and watch confused as nothing happened; no recoil, no damage dealt, no hit detected. I was excited by hearing the 3 hour destructiod preview when it was said these issues were fixed, but when I saw that video which is not to be spoken of, what I saw was the EXACT same issues Oblivion suffered from.

Meh. After playing enough dbz games like I have, one comes to love TES style combat. It's less should I use my special power to break the enemies rythem combo of death now or try to break it myself to save the special power for later in order to charge enough energy for my super death beam, and more that mage just took how much of my health with his little finger? The attacks do hold weight behind them, just not that much...but more than some games I've come to play and love. I think it does what it sets out to do. Creates an interactive fighting system that demands stratagy and player skill while ballancing that with character skills. It's not perfect, what with sometimes lacking hit detection and no location damage, but it's a possitive step.

I do think finishing moves will help...some. Not all, not by a long shot. But I do think they will help.

Of course Syrim's combat will be disappointing,

If you are playing a Bethesda game for combat, you're doing it wrong! :P

The guy's comparing it with Two Worlds II? Idiotic game with no shield block? In term of combat?

Edit: Besides, enemies in OB do disrupted by hits. What a rubbish article to begin with.

What? I don't see Super Mario in combat videos! Why is that?

Witcher is great, Batman is pure arcade.. and they don't have even a half of Skyrim features. Each game lacks of something, either poisons, stealth, magic w sword, dualwielding. DS hero is just stumbling on any barrel he finds.. :)

Dead Island is great but you can kick almost anything to death. The only problem you might have is bunch of fast zombies.

Absolutely stupid article.
