Disappointing Combat

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 3:35 am

I'm sorry, I don't know you, so don't take this personally, but that statement is pathetic.

Im sorry but your statement is pathetic. It is an RPG where your stats and perks dictate how good you will be in combat.
If you want combos and awesome smooth combat you are in the wrong place...

The guy's comparing it with Two Worlds II? Idiotic game with no shield block? In term of combat?

Haha, TW2 combat was like "click, click, click" as fast as you can. Nice comparison. If the combat does svck then i`ll just have to get my Dragon to burn everything to death :flamethrower:

I just want to throw my two cents in here and say that I'm watching this stuff again and it should be noted that the guy who's playing it is so horrendous, so piss poor of a player that it's very hard to determine how nice the combat is overall. I mean this guy stands in front of one enemy and hits the wrong button, accidentally sheathing his sword instead of swinging it at one point. In an earlier encounter he charges forward to attack an enemy, misses him entirely and finds himself in combat with a second enemy standing off to the left of him. He misses two or three bow shots from relatively close range and overall he seems entirely out of his league. I pity him. Skyrim is going to seriously put the hurt on this idiot.

But a true demonstration of Skyrim combat would be best illustrated by someone who actually knew how to fight in one these games. This guy is like an old lady in her car weaving all over the road. Just pitiful.

To quest you have to combat, to explore your going to need to combat and to level up your going to need to combat. With combat in your face all the time why shouldnt it look and react good... Oh I'm sure 99% of you havnt read this entire thread, I have not once siad
1. I dont like TES because of poor combat
2. Skyrims combat looks bad
3. This game is about nothing but combat
With that being siad more than half of the gameplay deals with or directly tied to combating. Do I love TES? hell yeah! Do I think TES combat svcks? nope. I'm only discussing my point with the peeps who keep chanting "Tes isnt about combat".
Exactly. I'm actually satisfied with the combat. It could be better, but it's already much improved from Oblivion. Pretending that combat is not important to disguise the fact that it's not perfect is just ridiculous. We have to be honest and realistic in our statements.

Now this was a fun read, thank you
It's funny how often video game reviewers either know nothing about the game or it's past history or just svck at video games to begin with, could you imagine if they got people who arnt good at driving cars to be in a commercial about a car with a stick shift? LOL

I thought I made it very clear that combat is one of the pillars that make the TES gameplay. You even removed that part from my message before quoting it!

Again: combat, exploration, guilds/questing and character development, those are the pillars of the TES gameplay. Combat is a part of the gameplay mix and you'll be doing a lot of it. For me it is a means to an end, I dont enjoy combat for the sake of combat. Atleast I've never done so in a TES game. Unlike a rockstar game, where I enjoy the whole gameplay mix including combat.

However the other three pillars (exploration, guilds/quests and character development) I find to be more enjoyable than the entire rockstar gameplay mix combined. So I dont find combat in TES all important, I just go through the motions to get further into a cave and understand the story behind it. or to finish a quest and develop my character('s story).

Just to be clear, I never said TES isnt about combat. The guy that I quoted did, so Im not sure why you quoted me..

Combat in the Trailers and Gameplay is used primarily just to pull in people because lets face it! Seeing a game where you get to fight in epic dragon battles and fight giants and skeletons is awesome! It's a good marketing strategy to get more people to purchase the game. Sure it's also a good way to show the fans the new animations, creatures and weapons but Im pretty sure the more fans the better and we all know gaming companies love thier money! haha COUGH TREYARCH COUGH!!!

I don't care about combat ... Morrowind owns any RPG that has ten times better combat ... RPG is about world, not fighting... Skyrim has a decent combat system

Sorry, not sure what you mean about "nice comparison". I was actually implying what a terrible review/article it was.

But you are right. Discussing this almost make me forgot about how we can summon dragons Final Fantasy-Like in an open world game.

Why does everyone quote this this like some kind of holy mantra? I admit I never played anything prior to morrowind but 90% of my time in morrowind was killing people and creatures. So can you please explain to me what TES is all about if it's not killing everything that moves outside of a city?
I'm sorry, but I disagree. The Elder Scrolls is, in part, about combat, yes. It's not about combat. I realise this is very opinion-based, but to me, TES are RPGs. A RPG is about so much more than just dealing damage. True, it's impossible to complete any of the TES games without killing stuff. But is that really what's most important? The raw, brutal fighting? I find exploring, house decorating and in-game literature to be just as important. To the game as a whole, a half-decent combat system is not a disaster. Of course I'd like to see some improvement over Oblivion (and I know we will), but to be honest I'm most excited about the new, open world. 10 days now. Will be magnificent!

I like how that site compared Dead Island to Skyrim.

Dead Island was mindless, with minimal RPG elemants, the AI was meant to be stupid (zombies), the quests were go find/kill x of y and report to person z, which once in a while switched to escort missions where the AI truly shined, as I've never seen AI so stupid in my life (and damn I sat through Morrowinds escort quests.).

I'll freely admit the combat was satisfying as it feels good to cave in a zombies skull for a 5 minute session Ahh there it is again, the Z word. Good luck ragdollizing a normal guy with your super kick, I'm sure he'll love that. In fact large portions of the gameplay degenerated into exploiting the lame ragdoll mechanic by franticly running around spamming the super kick, to the point where your awesome stomp of doom becomes your main attack, screw the crowbar! As for the larger zombies, the gameplay further degenerated into wack him, backpedal and wait for AI reset, run forward, wack him (stupid ass AI). The ability to throw your weapons was done nicely.

... But the shooting mechanics were terrible, the weapons broke in 15 hits and I do question why my foot seems unaffected when I've been Jackie Chan-ing the [censored] out of millions of zombies with it. But oh, my crowbar broke, thats realistic isn't it, must be made out of tin foil! That's GOOD combat for you? Another case of an audience of people with a 5 minute attention span looking for cheap thrills and not really thinking the whole process through.

Winner: Dead Island.

Combat looks stiff and not really enjoyable on its own. Then again, Elder Scrolls has never been about combat. The many new combat moves/perks already increase the depth of the combat tenfold.

Skyrim isn't a real action-RPG like Diablo III and such, those games require great combat because it is all about combat. The way I see it, combat is a means to an end. The goal being: completing quests and developing your character. By my definition Skyrim is a real RPG so I'm not buying it for the combat alone.

So I'm okay with disappointing combat, had this game not offered a detailed world, multiple factions, etc then I certainly would not have bought it for the graphics and combat alone.

What ,wait , you actually like Diablo style combat and think its good compared to Oblivion's? I'm mindboggled.

No, no, no, definatly not. Just want to make that clear

Diablo's hack 'n slash kind of combat is an ..eh.. acquired taste. What I mean is that those kind of RPG have combat as their main attraction. You develop your character only with the intent to be better at the combat and get more fun out of it. It isnt about story, questing or exploration.

Action-RPG are about the combat, so with games like Diablo the combat has to be good (whether it is or not, is an opinion). Games like Elder Scrolls still have combat as an important element but it isnt the only element that makes the gameplay. So a game can have poor combat but be great because of the openworld exploration, questing and character development. Morrowind and Oblivion are examples of such a game.

Poor to mediocre combat but still massively popular for other reasons.

I agree that it is not about combat, but there is no denying that combat has a very important role for almost all players, even roleplayers. I am satisfied with the combat, for I wasn't expecting anything too fancy, but of course I'd be happy if we had some advanced combat features such as locational damage and the polemic staggering. And I roleplay myself! By no means this will ruin the game for me, I am okay with the combat system, but claiming that an incomplete combat system is "awesome because TES is not about combat" is just absurd.

I liked the combat in Dead Island, infact, its the first zombie game Ive ever enjoyed playing for more than 13 minutes. Sure, the combat CAN degrade into what youve described, but I have little pity for those who let it come to that. People actually seem to be doing it on purpose just so they can rag on it.

The tools are there to have some really intuitive and fun gameplay. If you want to simply exploit holes (of which there are many, I might add..) then expect to have a [censored] time. But if you play it as you go, and get into it, its a memorable experience. A game is only as fun as you make it (mostly)

So many people bashing Oblivion and I simply cannot understand it. I enjoyed Oblivion's melee combat immensely, it certainly wasn't visually stunning, but it helped my immersion by feeling relatively realistic.

For the most part you couldn't simply swing your weapon wildly at the enemy to kill them, because they'd block and you'd stagger backwards, leaving you open to attacks. You had to watch your enemy, react to their movements, block when they attacked to stagger them or else take that opportunity to do some damage of your own, that sort of thing. To me each individual combat in Oblivion felt like I was dueling my opponent and that's exactly what I want.

Now yes, it wasn't perfect. There were points at which you could make it so that you could simply swing wildly and win; a goblin, for instance, isn't exactly much of a threat and can be taken down with minimal effort, but then that's fine because it's just a goblin, and even if you do simply swing wildly you're taking unnecessary damage that you ought not to be. You could also achieve the swinging wildly problem if you purposely overpowered your character, a massive bonus damage enchant on your weapons could potentially put you in that situation; but there are so many ways of overpowering yourself in TES anyway, such as poisons which can kill any enemy in a few seconds, or spells that can wipe out a room, that it's your own fault if you take that path. By the latter levels in something like Morrowind you were a walking god, Oblivion was a little more humble if you didn't force every advantage you could get.

If Skyrim's combat system is Oblivion 2.0 with the various upgrades that they've announced and the more weighty feel that the reviewers have commented on then I will be having a heck of a lot of fun with it, and I imagine that a lot of people on these forums probably will too, because if combat is SO important to them and they HATE Oblivion's combat then they wouldn't be anticipating its sequel so highly to begin with.

That!

I first realised it in Sancre Tor when battling the fallen Blades. Each battle was a duel against an opponent that could kill me in a few strokes if I was not careful. Since then I have enjoyed melee combat a lot more in Oblivion.

I hope to get the same feeling in Skyrim, where battling a foe feels epic, not because of the combat animation, but because of the ever changing tactical situation and ability to see my opponent in the eyes while attacking.

http://www.hookedgamers.com/blogs/chrispriestman/2011/10/31/skyrims_combat_may_not_be_good_enough_for_todays_standard.html

It is more like Oblivion and Fallout's Gamebryo Engine! :( MEH!! Damnnn.... what do u guys have to say?

How is that statement pathetic? Get out of here bro. Your pathetic for even calling someone pathetic over a video game.
Not trying to be nitpicky here, but he clearly said his STATEMENT is pathetic, not he himself.
And to some extent, i tend to agree.
