All I'm seeing in that article is someone complaining about enemies not reacting to getting hit. But lets anolyze the games that dude mentions.
Dead Island: yes, the zombies react to getting hit, but not always. Dead Island's location combat mechanic is certainly fun though.
Dark Souls: I haven't played it. Combat looks fun and challenging. Winner: Dark S... ah screw it...
Two Worlds 2: very boring melee combat. You have these different attacks that you can learn but it feels lame and some of these moves are just plain useless.
Witcher 2: at this point I was having a hard time taking the guy seriously... TW2 combat is head and toes above Dead Island 2W2 and he makes it sound like it's worse.
Batman Arkham City: the issue here (and with all the above except Dead Island) is that the combat is built with a 3rd person view in mind. Meaning it works as intended only in 3rd person. Try forcing 3rd person views on some of the long time fans here... not a pretty picture
