Disappointing Combat

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 5:31 am

Hi long time fan here. I've been lurkin here since skyrim was announced.. I to have seen that which cannot be spoke of lol...(rhymes wit bid, starts wit a v) Anyway i see alot of comparing to other games being done but the most obvious one (fallout) has not been mentioned??.. Now let me get this out the way cause i feel as many hours that i've sunk in these games it needs to be said... Bethesda makes great games and as of right now are my favorite company to look to for rpgs... Jrpg's fell off for me.

Pretty much after ffx a good jrpg has not been made.. Elder scrolls give me my rpg fix and then sum!!! But if bethesda were to ask me wat are the weak points?
I would say ANIMATIONS and COMBAT...
I can't help but frown when i know that our weapon selection is [SWORD] [BOW] [AXE] and [DAGGER] :(
oh and we get a great version of sword&axe..
Yet fallout has swords, meat, cleavers, axe's, baseball, bats, chainsaws, brass knuckles, gauntles, crossbows, golfclubs, poles wit a cement chunk at the end of it..

Various hands-on impressions:

"Without a doubt, combat’s more visceral this time around"

"The hit-detection, sound and weight of melee combat feel great. As someone who never loved Oblivion due to its combat, this is somewhat of a revelation"

"Combat works very well in Skyrim, but it doesn’t feel as sluggish as Oblivion."

"Skyrim’s combat is visceral and brutal. Swordplay is vastly improved; You now feel like you’re actually hitting your enemies."

"Though only a small area, replete with six brigands packing various melee and ranged weaponry, the mine gave a good taste of how combat feels in Skyrim – and it’s reassuringly chunky and brutal. "

This. I think I have seen a LOT more positive than negative reactions to combat in all the previews I've read.

razors pretty much any thing u can think of...
As well as optional hardcoe mode :( (I sooooo expected skyrim would have it but it doesnt even when u can cook now n not have to worry about radiation :facepalm
However the [archery] and [magic] (mostly magic has recieved a great overhaul) thank u bethesda!! Like i always do i will create zelda bosmer focus on archery n magic! :)
u nords and fellow melee lovers calm down! U say they don't feel yo blows? Well lvl up n when they head rolls they'll feel dat!

From what I've seen, the locking on keeps missing and your swings are really random. I'm just gonna be an archer :)

All I'm seeing in that article is someone complaining about enemies not reacting to getting hit. But lets anolyze the games that dude mentions.

Dead Island: yes, the zombies react to getting hit, but not always. Dead Island's location combat mechanic is certainly fun though.

Dark Souls: I haven't played it. Combat looks fun and challenging. Winner: Dark S... ah screw it...

Two Worlds 2: very boring melee combat. You have these different attacks that you can learn but it feels lame and some of these moves are just plain useless.

Witcher 2: at this point I was having a hard time taking the guy seriously... TW2 combat is head and toes above Dead Island 2W2 and he makes it sound like it's worse.

Batman Arkham City: the issue here (and with all the above except Dead Island) is that the combat is built with a 3rd person view in mind. Meaning it works as intended only in 3rd person. Try forcing 3rd person views on some of the long time fans here... not a pretty picture :P

My opinion: dude has no idea what he's talking about.

The guy is an idiot. If you hit an enemy with a powerful 2h weapon or a fus roh dah, they will stagger. I hate noob journalist that jerk off to skiboard magazines. They need to go get a life.

Dark Souls is mundane, ugly, repetitive. Don't try to convince me otherwise.
Your wrong.

Not trying to convince, just telling you how it is.

Thing i was scared about is actually true. Skyrim's combat is fairly disappointing guys. Read this:

http://www.hookedgamers.com/blogs/chrispriestman/2011/10/31/skyrims_combat_may_not_be_good_enough_for_todays_standard.html

It is more like Oblivion and Fallout's Gamebryo Engine! :( MEH!! Damnnn.... what do u guys have to say?
You don't have too watch the leaked video you can watch the 3 part Demo, it shows the combat. Why would you think the combat would be any good in Skyrim when it hasn't been in all of there past Elderscrolls games? Not too mention how bad the old games were in third person. Skyrim is more about exploring a huge world, but I here what your saying, but I would rather have a bug free game I'm hoping they get that part right this time.

Thats quite the fan-boy you have there. Oh dear, he just vomited all over the thread... Are you feeding him right? He looks like a malnourished sickly eel. Maybe you should put him away for the day, hm?
I guess you can't put up an argument besides atracking me and calling me a really devoted fan. Dark Souls is an ugly repetitive game. It has horid combat. You just dodge and attack. And the bosses always use cheap shots. Its graphics svck. Skyrim on the other hand looks badass.

Yes, we know you hate Dark Souls. You've never played the game, but you know It is evil, it is the worst game ever, and it can never compare to Skyrim, god's gift to games.

Combos and button hacking are 3 of 5 of the stuffs they show there. Skyrim's combat has a lot freedom and isn't based upon a two hits and one heavy hit to make a cool move. (dragon ball Z on PS2 anyone).

I completely disagree with the article.

Look up LoTR for PS2. There's a combat the writer of the article wants.

I'm going to ignore that you even typed that. Some of you "true fans" seriously make me feel ashamed to even be on the same forum as you.

That is your opinion, but it seems tinged with bias. Trying to pass it off as absolute truth only makes you appear disingenuous. It is http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=he7AS_h5QlA#t=21s by any means, though its style may not be to everyone's liking.

Needs moar Japanese animation.

Put up an argument for what you posted? Thats funny. I salute your masterful use of articulation by typing up all those words without ever actually saying anything beyond how ignorant you are

What have you said that's worth anything more than my scornful ridicule and general disdain? Nothing.

You are a fan-boy of the worst kind, and nothing more.
Congratulations on your fantastic life

A slightest hint of similarity with other game's combat would damage a developer's integrity. Let alone copying... (no offence... want cookie? )

I've said this here that the problem is not of something being lack of this or that, but wanting a game to be like other games. And that other games also often nitpicking about combat no matter how "seemingly perfect" their combat was.

No offence taken.
I don't think so. Developers do watch and learn from what other devs do. And there are similiarities already - the whole basis of the combat (melee hacking, parrying, archery, magic). I'm not asking TES to be Risen or to copy combat mechanics from it, I'm asking for the devs to take heed of what it did right and see if there are any ideas on how, based on what is learned, to improve what they are doing -- namely, in this case, the responsiviness and dynamicy of melee combat, because, as someone said, the combat now looks like painting, the wall doesn't react to the brush in other ways than getting color.

The "wall" reacted just fine from what I saw on some tiny, low resolution screen. Even if Skyrim is a half step above Oblivion (and it looks far more than that), I'll be just fine.

I'm not trying to be mean, but I can't take anyone who's bemoaning about the combat seriously here. I think people need to play for themselves instead of basing opinions on hearsay, or leaked footage. Wait till you get the real thing, then gripe and complain. A solid base for an argument would lead to better credibility.

Of you look at all those vids, every game has their own Combat system. Dark souls looks horrible imo. You should not brag about skyrim while other games even look worse. I think skyrim looks great in its own way.

Post limit. Now, let's wait until the game is officially released before another thread, then everyone can talk with some authority.
