Why would you say it's not an RPG?
I believe Capcom officially calls it an action game, but if Lionhead can call Fable 2 and 3 RPG's, then Dragon's Dogma is most certainly an RPG.

Everywhere I look it's classified as RPG or Action-RPG. I don't see why it would be anything else. Yes there is no menu page where you micro-manage your skills through a bunch of arbitrary numbers but there is boat load of other ways that you customize your characterless and their classes.

Got beaten pretty bad last night.

I was fighting a bunch, actually quite a few, bandits and was doing alright except then a pack of wolves joined into the fray. Killed off the wolves but by the time all was said and done all my pawns were dead and several of the bandits were still around.

I successfully escaped the battle but then decided to go back (big mistake) and try to revive them and fight my way out of the group of bandits.

Unfortunately as I revived two of my three pawns (they died at the exact same spot) a bandit shot me with an arrow (or something that took a big chunk of health out of me) and right behind him, before I could heal myself, a bandit stabbed me and I died.

It was a good death :)

Let me guess....the road just outside the Encampment? yeah I had problems there too. Been a while since we had an RPG where combat is challenging. Go for the mages and archers first when it comes to bandits.

Yea there was a particular group of Bandits giving me trouble on one of the paths. I leveled up a decent amount since than and was able to wipe them out with relative ease. The same can't be said about Griffins. I've encountered two and each time I've put about two dozen arrows into them with zero health damaged, so I took off running.

Yep

Spoiler
Had to go find Quina for a quest.

Apparently all the women in this world are airheads who like to wander off into danger (then again when does that not ever happen in games like these?)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon

Well. Wikipedia lists it as Action RPG. and uh Survival Horror  http://www.gamestop.com/xbox-360/games/dragons-dogma/90839 Gamestop lists it as action. http://www.gamespot.com/dragons-dogma/ GameSpot says it defines the action genre. And it think it is action as well. To me an RPG is where you can go and do whatever you want like Skyrim. I can't be a Farmer or a Thief in DD. I personally don't think it's an RPG.

Be well prepared when you travel at night. I just faced a horde of Saurians and a Chimera.

So according to your theory none of the following games would be RPGs;
The Witcher series
Mass Effect series
Dragon Age series
Fable series
Kingdom's of Amalur Reckoning
Final Fantasy series or any JRPG for that matter

I could go on but you get the point.

yeah fighting at night is a rush to say the least. Although i just took out an army of bandits (about 12) outside a broken down fortress during the day. that was a war.

thank goodness for the top ranked pawn I hired

Is there a lot of dungeons you can play in that aren't quest related? Is the loot level scaled, or can you find unique hand placed loot throughout the world?

No. Mass Effect is a game in what you say and do effect the world therefore it's a Shooter RPG. I never played the Witcher. Final Fantasy is an RPG with a set goal in mind and what you say and do effect the world. Never played KoAR. Fable is an RPG because it has RPG elements such as Children and Wives etc. [while DD has RPG elements I still would not classify it as an RPG. It's more like Dead Island, A vast open world where you can do a whole bunch of things. But it's not fully an RPG] Dragon Age is just a terrible game IMO so i won't go there.
I personally don't think DD is an RPG. It is an Open World Action game with RPG elements.

Since always. You can be a woodcutter and a fishermen too. There are plenty of non violent characters you can make.

It doesn't have to be as grand as TES, but can you go "off the beaten path" and dungeon dive if you want, or are the dungeons tied to quests?

So far I have been able to. There aren't many caves/dungeons, but there are so many enemies that it takes a lot longer to explore than TES. Especially at night

Its worth a rent at least to see if you like it. The combat is by far the best part. Seeing a gigantic cyclops suddenly have a wall of flame erupt under it at night was quite a sight

Took a while for me to realize, but you can throw vials of oil/water at enemies to douse them. I went into a mine to clear it out, and it ended up having THREE ogres in it. The first one was easy for some reason, but the second and third kept drop kicking me into oblivion. Eventually I just started chucking oil at them, setting them on fire, and running. I even hauled an entire jar of oil up there and threw it in one of the ogre's faces before casting firewall. :hehe:

Ogres do not like women, so from now on I'm having all four members of the team be women. That way it doesn't just target ME the entire time.

Also had a random encounter with some assassin wielding two strange looking blades and spaming some spin attack. That was not a pleasant welcoming party after the mines.

More like lecherous giant apes. They go all ape like, grunt and howl a little bit, "ooh oooh eeeh oh oh oh", and then go into frenzy mode and target only the women.

Maybe it's not that they don't like women. Make it's that they like them too much. :ermm:
