Dragon's Dogma Thread #3

Post » Sat May 26, 2012 10:06 am

2nd thread http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1372516-dragons-dogma/

Continuing from the last thread.

Dragon's Dogma is a game made by Capcom. The world is a dangerous one where one hero isn't always enough. Take up arms with Pawns and fight Griffin's and Chimera's. Slay hordes of Goblins and Wolves. Set forth your journey into the world of Gransys

The game is out now so buy it if you can find a copy.

Reviews
Gameinformer: 8.5

Combat feels like a necessary part of the game's design, rather than something that was begrudgingly added to provide interaction between cutscenes. I left the game feeling that I made my mark on Gransys the way I chose to, instead of being escorted from plot point to plot point. When you're talking about an open-world game, I can't think of higher praise.

Just recruited the top ranked pawn. Maybe this one won't be so dumb

Still can't decide if I want to go up to ranger class. Feels like I am starting over from scratch

IGN gave it a 7.5. Metacritic rating is sitting at a 7.5 based on 27 critic reviews and the user score is a 7.8. All signs point to average. Usually scores are all over the place and rarely do you see both critic and user scores being virtually the same. Pretty good sample from both parties. Official Xbox Magazine (OXM) gave it a 6 and said it's "shallow and has no heart".

I actually prefer games that are in the 7.5-9 range. 7.4 and below are usually bad with many exceptions and 9.1 and above usually appeal to so many people that they don't have what I really want in a game with several exceptions.

True, but what separates a 7.5 from a 7.4? I'm still going to get the game for sure. What can I say? I'm a svcker for RPG's

I love that screen! The first thing I thought was...can you jump in that water lol. Is there a swimming mechanic?

Thanks

Unfortunately there kind of isn't a swimming mechanic. It's explained in game that there's a monster called "brine" that essentially eats away at you if you go into the water. So it's best not to try to go swimming.

Lol nothing really separates them. It is mostly just some pseudo science on my part. It is more a general rule of thumb for me if I don't know much about the game. If I do then nothing usually stops me from getting a game. I have played 4/10 rated games and loved them to pieces before.

From the last thread

How are you not?

You claimed everyone agreed with you when you do not know the opinions of half the people who posted in this thread? Out ofnall those that did like 6(not gonna count as I am on a mobile) people commented on the weather and bounty thing. So that makes about 7 people including myself. 2/7 people think it is an issue. The others think it is not that big of an issue and made non specific posts about it in anycase. How do you not see the overgeneralizations?

~Albino Dunmer.

The people that did comment except for you and Bauer agreed that The lack of the systems did not matter. And that's all we have so we kinda have to generalize. Capcom never does anything like that. Dragon's Dogma is an Open World action game with RPG elements like leveling and skills. But it's not an RPG.

It's not just IGN. It's sitting at a 7.5 with 27 other reviews and a 7.8 user score. Pretty good sample with critics and users both unanimously reviewing it as "average". I'm still going to get it though. I'll pretty much play any open world RPG.

So what party set-up is everyone running with? My character is a level 18 Strider while my main pawn is a level 18 Fighter. Than as my support I have a level 18 Mage and a level 28 Fighter.

I play a Fighter with my Pawns being Mage for healing, Sorcerer for deadly Magic attacks and Ranger for ranged. I'm level 23 as of last night and so are all my pawns.

I really don't ever pay much attention to reviews unless they are below 6

A word of caution: When you encounter eldritch horror tentacles sprouting from the ground, and you will, don't fight them.

Just run. :ahhh:

Capcom is advertising it as an "open world RPG", not a "open world action game with RPG elements". That's why I refer to it as an RPG.

How's the magic system? Do spells scale with you, or are they separated by tiers like in Skyrim? I saw a video with someone using this tornado spell and it looked awesome.

I remember when people called Oblivion an action game with RPG elements.

It's really good. If your a magic user they are classified as skills and you can learn more powerful ones as you level up.

My god. I just saw a Griffin swoop down and kill a delivery convoy. I guess it was a random encounter. It got away with the Ox before i could kill it. Utterly amazing.

Yea I made the mistake of trying to fight it at first. THis lead to it devouring one of my pawns.
