Dragonborn tips from Xbox 360 players to PCPS3 players

Post » Mon Feb 04, 2013 4:10 pm

It is 2013, and hopefully Dragonborn is not too far off! After a month of DB goodness the 360 players basked in, no doubt they know the ins and outs of this potentially amazing DLC. As we approach the release of DB for PC/PS3, it is best to know what is what in terms of preparation and caution before we head into Solstheim. Who better to ask than the people that have played it themsleves?

I made this thread for this reason: 360 players giving a heads up, advice, tips, etc. for the PC/PS3 crowd. What potions should we bring? What gear do I need to wear? What enemy do I have to watch for? That kind of stuff!

Though, obviously, this is the spoiler forum, it would still be best to spoiler something revealing like part of the MQ. Your choice, really!

Anyway, please be civil and do not spam the topic to the point it derails!

Thanks! :tops:

Okay, I'll shoot first.

Anyone know all the possible followers/NPCs who you can gain the favor of by doing menial tasks for them?

You can hire one guy in the Raven Rock Tavern, and Neloths Helper will join you in your adventures, also there is a Skaal to join forces. And the Ricklings or those Goblins can bring some help too.

Well you can live inside but, you can't be the owner.

1. Strong Boxes can be found throughout Solstheim. They have Expert Locks. Among the treasure, you'll find East Empire Pendants. They're worth the effort, because a guy named Fethis Alor in Raven Rock pays 500 gold a piece for them. The Pendants only list as 25 gold, but don't be fooled!

2. Nordic Carved Armor is badass. Its Heavy Armor and rates between Orcish and Ebony. Nordic Weapons rate higher than Elven, but are lighter.

3. Be VERY CAREFUL when clearing Stones. You'll know what that means when you get to it. I think a NPC I wanted for a Side Quest died during a Stone encounter, because he's not showing up anywhere in my game.

There's a glitch with the Telvanni homebase. As far as anyone can tell, the room you get never gets cleared up and you never get ownership of the bed. It remains in disrepair and full of cobwebs. You can't get your own tower regardless, the room is inside the main tower.

Spoiler
Don't go in expecting to have tea with Miraak. He's a d*uche.
Don't sleep until the MQ is over. Really. Don't.
Read the new books. Lots of lore. Whether you do it before or after the MQ is up to you; they're not going anywhere.
Make it a habit to pick up every book you see in Apocrypha, and make sure you look for them as well. Every book in the game can spawn there, as well as the new ones.
If you can, play the Morrowind expansion Bloodmoon first. I didn't, and I'm kinda disappointed I missed out on the nostalgia some others got from this. I feel like it would have made it so much better.
Don't go on very many Dragon Hunting trips while Miraak is still alive, after you meet him.
Take the time to sit on the bench next to the guy with the Silt Strider and look over at Red Mountain the distance. You'll see why. Even I, having not played Morrowind, had my mind blown by how deep and peaceful that was.
Find the guy who does Kolbjorn Barrow early on. It's possibly the longest quest, and it's LONG. Also, make sure you reserve some money for him. You can probably look up how much somewhere. You want to keep the ball rolling on that quest so you can do other stuff while you wait.
Make sure you're aware of the final boss battle glitch and use one of the two possible ways to fix it. (Though, my fix is the easiest imo since the dragons are closest and easiest to hit when you're on Sahrotaar).
Make good use out of the Black Books.
The Ebony Warrior is stronger than his armor would suggest.
Carved Nordic Armor makes you look fat.
Stahlrim is supposedly now the second best armor, behind Daedric. Not sure about weapons, but I know they're weaker than Dragon (which are the best).
Do the blacksmith's misc objective in Raven Rock as one of the first things you do. The reward is something you'll want to have in case you're exploring and stumble on Stahlrim.
Serpentine Dragons might be the new strongest Dragon, not sure though.
Dwarven Ballista's attacks ignore armor, and WILL kill you if you underestimate it. But it reloads slow, so make use of this.
When walking up the path to Miraak's Temple, followers WILL get stuck on the steps. Just be patient, and if they stop moving (because you moved too far away), move close enough that they start running toward you. Obviously the steps having cutting issues and any non-Dragonborn NPC can get stuck on them. I lost Serana for three days that way, because she walked all the way back to Fort Dawnguard. Almost lost my wife and Garmr just yesterday that way. Had to be patient with them. After you get up the stone steps and see the wooden ramp, you're in the clear.
Don't unenchant the Champions Cudgel. It's a unique weapon, but the enchantment is on other things too. I made that mistake on my first playthrough of DB and I regret it. It looks pretty cool, for a two-hand weapon.
Take out the Miraak's Cultists quickly when they first show up in Skyrim, because you have to be in a major hold city to meet them, and they WILL kill other NPCs that get involved.
Attack the Ebony Warrior with your back to the mountain wall, not the air.
Might have gone overboard. There's a fair amount of spoilers in there, sorry. :P

Werewolf. You can buy some rings that improve your werewolf powers.

+ also a lot of enemies that use fire (bad for vamps).

Concerning the Black Books that grant unique powers- are you able to change any ability from any book more than once, or is it a one-time deal with every book? I know you can respec you perks at any given time upon completing the MQ, but was wondering it that was the same deal with the other books.

Anytime. Just solve the Book, and you can open the book at anytime and be transported to the end of the Apocrypha level associated with the book, in front of the powers/perk station. Then you choose it, and leave.

Players that have a high Smithing skill and Enchanting skill can enjoy some awesome weapons and armor once they have learned how to smith Stahlrim. Frost enchantments on Stahlrim weapons and armor realize a 25% increase.

Kinda. You get a set of rings that give you spell powers/perks for being a werewolf. If you're not a werewolf, the pack of hunters won't even talk to you. If you are, you can buy things from one guy, including the rings, and that's.. about it. Him and one girl are nice and friendly, the other guy isn't talkative and is a bit abrupt, and the other girl is a downright, stone cold [censored].

I believe you can switch out. Its like the Standing stones. If you want a different one you read the book you got the perk from and change it. Though to be honest it seems once you get a perk you pretty much don't need to change it since they tend be pretty useful.

Oh and don't touch the big glowy stones. Try to resist touching the glowy Stone, you may want to click on it but don't. You do and well...Nothing bad happens its just annoying.

Neloth is not going to give you his bed, even if he never sleeps in it. The bed we get use of is else where.

Sadly, no you cannot. Also, if you are under 25, be wary at higher difficulties because the baddies are a lot tougher compared to the rest of Skyrim.
