FPS Drop when near NPCs Thread 3

Post » Mon Mar 21, 2011 8:48 am

I am getting white boxes (looks like artifacts) while using this dll fix. That is pretty troublesome. Anyone else?

Using a GTX 460 at stock gets the white box flickers using the dll fix. Using my GTX 460 stock or OC'ed to 875mhz no artifacts in any other game. This is making me worry that this dll fix is actually dangerous. I'm no guru, but its concerning.

Try turning AA down to 4x... and then try off. I have the same problem in a few other games at extreme levels of AA. I have a GTX 460 stock-overlock. This happens even when cool. One of the games i've seen it in, the devs have already found and fixed it (in the beta release) so it is NOT a problem with your card that you should be worried about.

It's white boxes like this. As seen here, once one appears if i stop moving they actually stay on the screen. If i don't walk, but I just move my cursor it disappears and reappears in the exact same spot. It happens frequently enough that its ruining the game experience. I guess I'll try dropping the AA more. It was already at only 4x.

Oh jeez...

That's what I see, but they are only instant flashes. They never stick.

I also get black ones rarely, during the day.

Hmm. Still sounds like an AA issue. Basically there's a tiny seam, and the AA is sampling in the white 'background' from that seam when it shouldn't?

Definitely have not seen any of those. (Yet?) Will keep my eye out for it though. Gonna restart a character and actually play the game shortly. Been on here all day trying to help. :cookie: I've ran around quite a bit today testing but have abandon all questing.

Hi everyone... just registered in order to contribute to this particular topic.
I too have an M11x R2, with the GT335M and Optimus.
(i5, 8 gb RAM)

I can confirm the stubborn launcher loop. Have not been able to get past that with the dll in the proper folder... have to delete it to run the game... which is barely playable with the serious FPS problem.

If someone does come up with a fix for Optimus/GT335/M11x R2 please let me know.

BTW, I am running driver version 258.96 (with the proper fixes and whatnot)
Has anyone upgraded to the new drivers (alleged to work with the M11x) released just a few days ago?

That would be... let me see...
http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-260.89-whql-driver.html
version 260.89

yeah i am with this guy, the .dll fix isn't working because of launcher loop. lemme know if there in anyway to fix this plz

They go away completely with AA turned off. Bummer. I happen to like AA.

Well I just patched the game. Being one of the many that was struggling with the NPC issues last night I figured I'd report on how it worked/didn;t work for me.
I was experiencing the whole combo last night of slowdowns when npcs are on screen and when they speak.

The patch has resolved the issue of fps hit when I'm around them but it has not resolved the issue
of speech. Just like before, anytime an npc speak my frame rate plummets down below 20.
Can anyone else can confirm this result as well that had the full blown npc lag before
the patch?

I will wait for a patch before I go messing with things. I don't want to ruin my experience further so I'm going to play gothica 4 and wait for a meaty patch to fix the NPC lag.

If I were you, I'd download it, it works really well and there are no downsides. All you have to do is delete the dll once you don't want it anymore. :foodndrink:

I was playing with x8 AA and I see those every time I shoot my gun but they disappear right after that like its part of a flash or something. I thought it was some new vegas thing to make combat seem different. If its a bug then I'm getting it too I guess lol.

totally appalling

it looks like this issue was definitely apparent during the beta phase, but nevertheless instead of releasing a quality product you release this.
but hey nobody is going to die from this, it is not like releasing a car that has defective brakes, oh wait that has been done before.

it is also nice to have a strong community here as you can see there are no developers giving two "shi*s" about this issue, you guys seriously need some PR skills.

quite amazing how the reviews of the game are very high on almost all PC review sites, but hey not everybody can own a supercomputer capable of predicting climate trends .... :brokencomputer:

I read somebody say the dll disables HDR (it doesn't) and somebody else saying how the framerate improvement is the result of reduced visual quality pertaining to again HDR. Not true, took screenshots with and without of HDR signs and also specular highlights on the road. Identical in both instances. And the white spots are because AA is implemented incorrectly in the game, nvidia's next driver will have a workaround in case the devs do not fix it. Just turn it off for now and turn off transparency multisampling to increase the amount of blood

I can only confirm the opposite. The patch has helped smoothness a bit, but where there are many NPCs around, (especially unfriendly ones) the FPS plummets to I'd say, 5 or less.
I have a GTX460 1GB.

If during one of these lag encrusted fights I speak with an NPC, the frame rate is resurrected back to normal.

Having the kind of same problem as the poster above me, not going as low as 5 FPS, but still not silky smooth around NPC's. Especially not when NPC's show their face to me

Usually walking around with 60FPS after the lag fix, then those 5/6 legion guys in nipton took me down to 40, when I started attacking them they even took me down to high 20 to 30

That sounds like my problem.

I had the settings on medium. I think I also did the toggleemotions.

What GPU you have?

They were saying that because the "lens glare effect" was missing when staring at the sun. I noticed this as well. When I first load the game and stare at the sun, I get the blinding glare and a type of "lens flare" effect with it. If you enter a building and then exit back out, the effect on the sun is gone.

This happened with or without the patched DLL file, so I have to conclude that it is a general game bug.

Well, kind of good to hear that I'm not the only one then! I wonder why we still have this problem though. If you find anything, could you update this post?

On Tuesday, I noticed I had the same problem. Whenever I was with human NPCs (allied or hostile), the game would drop in framerates. It was damn near unplayable when inside the Vikki and Vance casino when everyone was piled inside unless I was looking away from the center of it. But the strange thing was, this only happened with human NPCs. Monstrous NPCs, like Geckos, Scorpions, Bloatflies and such did nothing to my performance. It was really weird.

So, I looked and many people praised a d3d9.dll file that they put in their base NV folder, fixing the problem. So, I decided to download it and try it out myself. And wouldn't you know it? The problem went away, no more slowdowns around other humans. I can now play the game at maxed out settings on my laptop at proper framerate speeds just like I can with Fallout 3. If you have problems around human NPCs like I did, I don't care how you end up doing it, just get a d3d9.dll file into the base NV folder and the problems will go away, I can vouch for that.

Beyond this slowdown problem, I haven't had any other problems myself (not even the intro bug with the doctor's spinning head). Let's just hope it stays clean from here on...

Installing and playing the game on XP is the solution I used, as it happens my new pc is out of action due to a dud RAM stick so in the meantime I rebuilt my old pc and New Vegas runs rather well on it, not quite but almost perfect.

That's not really a solution, is it?
