FPS Drop when near NPCs Thread 3

Post » Mon Mar 21, 2011 6:43 am

We are expecting this issue to be patched, in the meantime, the community has found some success by swapping a file. See this thread

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1123460-potential-fix-for-npc-slowdown/

Here is the OP from the second thread with more information in it, however the above fix seems to hold much promise.

Thread I: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1122285-game-runs-very-choppy/

Thread II http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1123107-fps-drop-when-near-npcs/

Petition: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1122958-sign-here-if-you-have-the-npc-lag-issue/

General Slowdowns Thread: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1123115-general-fps-slowdowns/

Possible Solutions:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the console, type the following:
ToggleEmotions

(Special Thanks to Headless Chickens Inc)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the console, type the following:
ToggleEmotions

In the .ini file change the following
"iFPSClamp=0" to "iFPSClamp=40"
(Special Thanks to Neversleeps)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A clean install of the drivers using Driver Sweeper.
(Special Thanks to iamMark)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the .ini file change the following:
"bUseFaceGenHeads=1" to "bUseFaceGenHeads=0"
This Solution will cut off everyone's head.

For the sound issue, I just need to set cpu priority to high for the fallout.exe

I'm getting the same NPC lag as mentioned in this post. I did try all of the fixes mentioned, and the .dll did work for me. I'll post my dxdiag just for future reference for the Devs.

Someone needs to update the first post with the DX9/D3D9.dll fixes. Maybe we could get a better file host than megaupload.... since it tends to be shady.

Once I see enough posts with success, then I will change the OP. However there is no need to download the file, it already exists on your machine, just in another directory. There are instructions on how to find the file locally and not download it.

I added it to multiupload. Follow the link and you'll get 6 different filehosts to download from. Note that some of them contain ads, banners and popups.

Note that this is at your own risk. Your computer probably won't blow up, but don't blame me if something weird happens.

As for the fixes. First I tried setting everything to low, but still got choppiness. Then I tried the "toggleemotions", no noticeably difference. I tried the fpsclamp in the ini file and again, nothing noticeable. Then I tried the DLL file and it worked. I had to set the fpsclamp to 0 again or animations would be slow, but once I did, everything was as smooth as Fallout 3.

Can anyone monitor GPU use and say whetehr or not the file swap .dll fix allows the game to use more than 30% of thje GPU, or does it just fix the FPS drop issue?

Even if there is a fix for the FPS drop issue, (which would be awesome, I'm at work and can't confirm it works for me yet), does it solve the 30% GPU utilization problem?

If it does, great. If it doesn't the dev still need to get on that and utilize more than 1/3 of our hardware.

Since I dropped it in, both my 5870s now run at 30-40% were before only one did. The other was always at 0% even though it was using the 3D setting clocks. So it didn't increase the usage max, but it did start using 2 cards.

Better than nothing, but still not an adequate fix. Hopefully sometime soon then we will get a patch that fixes this and we will all get our wonderful FPS we deserve.

Hey Wolfpup,

What kind of frames you getting with that setup before and after the hotfix?

oh, and kudos to the epic power to the guy who figured the fix out, even if was on accident while trying to fix the intro movie crash. Grats, bro. I really hope it works for me when I get home. Even my wife is hoping, because yeah she'll lose me for the night, but its better than medical bills when I smash my face through the monitor in frustration ^_^

Before: 20-40
After: 45-65 with the very occasional drop to low 20s on transitions.

1920x1200
High settings
No AA or AF
V-Sync off

Oh yeah, I forgot to re-enable my 1Ghz OC on my CPU. Gonna do that now and see if it nets a few extra FPS.

edit: Correction. was 1920x1200 not 1680x1050.

Ok I messed up, let me try again.

Before I was running everything the same as above at 1680x1050 and was getting the 20-40 FPS in Goodsprings. With the the dll file I am now running at 1920x1200 instead, and I applied my OC to the CPU. I know get 57-80FPS running around Goodsprings. :)

Replacing d3d9.dll worked great for me! You can try using the .dll's from your own computer, they worked a little. However the link to d3d9.dll worked best. Everything runs much better!

Hi everyone... just registered in order to contribute to this particular topic.
I too have an M11x R2, with the GT335M and Optimus.
(i5, 8 gb RAM)

I can confirm the stubborn launcher loop. Have not been able to get past that with the dll in the proper folder... have to delete it to run the game... which is barely playable with the serious FPS problem.

If someone does come up with a fix for Optimus/GT335/M11x R2 please let me know.

BTW, I am running driver version 258.96 (with the proper fixes and whatnot)
Has anyone upgraded to the new drivers (alleged to work with the M11x) released just a few days ago?

That would be... let me see...

Someone is reporting using that .dll disabled HDR. Anyone else running into this?

Works fine for me still, and it was still ticked after the dll 'reset' the ini.

Ok more weird stuff going on now.

I get home, I put the quick fix .dll file into the folder, and now my on-screen display will not work for this game no matter what.

Anyone have this problem? I am using MSI afterburner software, which is what i was monitoring the game with before switching the file. Now I replace it and can't get the onscreen display to work at all... this is the only game it does not come up on. So frustrating. I want to measure the difference while playing and cannot. Am I missing something obvious here?

HDR still works perfectly for me after using the .dll fix. The launcher seems to think I am using a 7900 GS card instead of a GTX 260, but that doesn't matter, since the game is using my actual card and I am running everything maxed out with great framerates.

Does this DLL cause any other changes? Different shaders, etc?

I am getting white boxes (looks like artifacts) while using this dll fix. That is pretty troublesome. Anyone else?

Using a GTX 460 at stock gets the white box flickers using the dll fix. Using my GTX 460 stock or OC'ed to 875mhz no artifacts in any other game. This is making me worry that this dll fix is actually dangerous. I'm no guru, but its concerning.

I just tried the .dll and it worked. Strangly enough it listed my video card as a 7900GS when I have an ATI 5850!!!! Regardless it's running better.

That is why it worked, and why it's being used. It's been tweaked to trick the system and bypass the issue with newer dx10/11 compliant cards.
