FPS Drop when near NPCs Thread 3

It doesn't matter if you have 4gig or more, since this game cannot use more than 2GB

I know. Why is this? There is no logical reason to restrict memory usage. Weird.

Try using this on FalloutNV.exe: http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php
I used it in Oblivion. Haven't tested it on FNV.

Also, to ATI users, you should probably use the ATI version of the DLL fix: http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34970
Bunch of people reporting it fixes vegetation/transparency multisampling.

have 3 285 with the dll fix. i use EVGA Precision to monitor usage and other things on a small LCD. With and without the dll only 1 gpu has a load while the other 2 are idle. Its always 38%.

I have also see this lagg on my GTX 295, i7 920, WIN 7 X64 and 6 Gig RAM.
Any ideas? Just the .dll fix?

Hey FatePower,

I have the same system then ya, tho my i7 920 is clocked at 3.8.

What I did to solve my low fps / random breaks while looking:

1920x1080 Ultra:

1. Download the DLL and copy it to the game folder: Fixed the low frame rates from 20 or so to 60 always.

2. Water reflections to medium/low: Fixed the random breaks while panning/moving the camera etc.

3. Water multi sampling to low: Fixed the occasional breaks in certain buildings.

4. FFDSHOW add and exclusion in the options to falloutnv.exe to the list: Fixed my random sound breaks.

5. In the falloutnv.exe properties file go to "Compability" and mark the "Disable Desktop Compositions": Fixed some random crashes.

I'm very happy with the final results now. I can actually play the damn game now. Developers, DO YOUR DAMN JOB k k ? thanks.

A clean install of the drivers using Driver Sweeper.
(Special Thanks to iamMark)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The latest NVIDIA drivers (260.89) now include a feature to perform a "clean" install by removing all old drivers and such during the install process, which is pretty much what happens using Driver Sweeper as per the above quote. Has anyone used this new feature when upgrading to 260.89, and does it work as well as using Driver Sweeper?

It kind of sneaks up on you. Unless you catch it in the release notes (I didn't) you don't notice the new option until after you have already done the Driver Sweeper thing.

Anyway, it would be nice to not have to go through all the safe mode reboots and all that like you do with Driver Sweeper if it really does the job.

Had to register - great community, thanks for the dll - it made the game playable,

BUT, it hasn't fixed the GPU utilization. I have a quad sli GTX 295s and while playing the game, GPU 0, GPU 2 and GPU 3 reach a max load of 15% and that's "tops"! Only GPU 1 appears to be working at around 90% load. Also, memory controller load and video engine load on the three GPUs mentioned is always at 0%, while GPU 1 does all the work!

Anyone came with a work-around on this issue yet? I mean from the community; obviously the developers don't give 2 $hits about the junk they published...

Thank you, that did the trick for me also.
It's bad that the dev's not have released any fix for this, or release the game without any stutter problems.

my 2 machines just built in the last year or so..

machine 1:
Intel DP43TF
Core 2 Duo E8400
4 Gb DDR2 ram
evga 8400GS
Audigy SE

Machine 2:
Intel DP55WG
i5 2.66 GHz
8 Gb DDR3 ram
evga 9400GT
Audigy SE

I'm using a dual boot on both
machines -
XP pro SP3 32 bit and 7 ultimate 64 bit..

Tried to install an evga 9800 GTX+ on machine 1 before I built
the second machine and had nothing but problems and eventually
realized that the board was faulty...
so grabbed the 9400 GT and no problems since...
can't crank the settings up like the 9800 but the board runs
on medium settings like a dream... eventually put an
8400 in machine 1 cuz that's all it really needs and then
stuck the 9400 in machine 2..

machine 1 is being used for graphics projects
and other work related stuff so no games there..

but the i5 has FO3 GOTY on it and it runs smooth as
silk with 20+ mods... that's on XP...
I want to try and get FONV to run on
7 ultimate but don't know the OS nearly as well as XP..

I'm watching this thread closely...
hoping I can avoid a bunch of
problems trying to install the game...

Thanks for this thread you guys..
I think pretty soon I can install it
and it won't take too long to get
it to work right... thanks to all
your knowledge and hard work..

those having issues even with the dll and having hdr disabled this is due to the dx file having an older vershion setup for your gpu. Like nvidia cards even 400 series get labeled as 7900's some features are disabled by this visually. Also those with 400 series cards need to uninstall and perma disable the gpus onboard sound card this can be done via the device manager in windows, if you go to the evga forums go to the 400 series gpus there is a sticky guide on how to do this also gets rid of strange black screens. drunkenkid I think posted it....

Also when your save games reach about 5-7megs plus is when you start running into issues with the database causing strange things to happen in game, things like playing cards on you or your companions, large amounts of ammo and so on is the issue of this, best thing to do is go to nexus and get one of the houses or use a safe house to store all your items.

Also as for the fps each character pretty much has different ver positions, shader positions clothing and so on. The drop on top of a huge game information save it has to go and get the information for the npcs as well has to load them, configure them clothing, type, level vs your level, what they are wearing how to size them up to your current level. The fps drops because this is going on. If obsidian didnt make npcs so different it would be dull... every npc you ran into would pretty much look the same. But what its doing is checking your character and going into a data base sizing up the npcs in accordance to your level esp if its the first time you saw those npcs and you didnt kill them. They lvl up over time as you do. but the first time you run into a randomly generated genaric npc well you will get a little lag depending on your system.

Click one of the links in my sig. Personally it doesn't matter which one I use. (ATI vs Nvidia on an ATI card.) Even if it does degrade graphics, it's such a minor degradation I couldn't care less. (Frankly, I have not seen it. Meaning it doesn't effect me, or it's that minor.)

Then extract the file (May need http://www.7-zip.org/ to decompress it.) into the Fallout NV directory. "wherever"\Steam\SteamApps\common\fallout new vegas

The launcher will re-detect your settings when you start the game. Don't mind it says you have a 7900GS or 8800GS for a GPU, that is normal. Just set it up to whatever feels right for your system. (I'd start with medium and go from there.)

Good luck.

P.S.

Ok, I double checked. They are .rar files. If you use 7-zip you need to right click the .rar file>Open with>Navigate to where you installed 7-zip and select the 7zFM.exe (Or similar. The important part is FM, for File Manager.) Then highlight the dll, hit extract above it then navigate to the FalloutNV directory.

I tried the dll fix but it really didn't change anything...

My system is an i5 2.66ghz with 8gb DDR3 so should be fine to run the game..

I'm using an older video card - geforce 9400GT 1gb and I really didn't see a noticeable difference with the dll.
This is on Win7 64-bit.

However, I just updated the drivers to 260.99 and now see a big difference, the game runs much smoother,
I'm still getting a little lag around a lot of NPCs, the tiny stutters, as well as slight flickering of some textures,
but I think that's just the older video card... but the game is running much smoother than before and seems
to be more stable..

I haven't progressed very far in the game yet so don't know if things will get worse later,
but for now it seems quite a bit better than it was.. before I updated the drivers I was getting massive slow
down when around NPCs, when using VATS, around fires and smoke, and I was also getting the random CTD
which seems to be gone after the driver update... haven't tested it enough yet to be sure though..

I might upgrade the video card at some point, but for now at least it's playable...

The amount of retardation posted in this thread is absolutely staggering, In fact I could not find a feasible way to adress it in a single post without multiquoting virtually everyone in this thread(including the moderators who really should know better). Before I go off on everyone (which I apologize for but seeing so much dis-information is absolutely dissapointing). Allow me to link you to thread I made a few days ago that explains the fix and as a result the most likely cause for this issue. http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1134379-d3d9dll-and-why-it-works/ <- which btw should get added to the O.P as this is the fix most likely to work for any npc related slowdown. (busefacegenheads 0 is a good test to see if it will work for you)but playing with heads disabled is barely a solution.

My replies will be coloured red and in cursive for easier reading.

We are expecting this issue to be patched, in the meantime, the community has found some success by swapping a file. See this thread
I really hope so.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the console, type the following:

(Special Thanks to Headless Chickens Inc)

Doesn't do much, might improve framerate however does not actually adress the framerate issue fully.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the console, type the following:

In the .ini file change the following
"iFPSClamp=0" to "iFPSClamp=40"
(Special Thanks to Neversleeps)

This command locks the engine's calculations to the framerate specified, it's a fix for the stuttering issue that is unrelated to npc's and is caused by the 64hz issue. google it. It is also fairly bad set at 40 because if you exceed that framerate the game speeds up and if you go below it the game slows down. The only way this is usable is if your system is pulling a constant vsynced 60 fps and you set iFPSClamp to 60.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the .ini file change the following:
"bUseFaceGenHeads=1" to "bUseFaceGenHeads=0"
This Solution will cut off everyone's head.
(Special Thanks to Diari)

This works but is not a real solution(it is however a good test to check if you're plagued by the npc issues), disabling the heads however, makes the camera spaz out while talking to people.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A more risky (and involved) solution can be found in this thread
(Special Thanks to Seth9964)
This is crazy and should only be done if your computer has issues more far reaching that framerate issues near npc's.

Once I see enough posts with success, then I will change the OP. However there is no need to download the file, it already exists on your machine, just in another directory. There are instructions on how to find the file locally and not download it.
Read the thread I linked above thank you. It is not the d3d9.dll in on your machine that does not improve performance in the slightest.
I added it to multiupload. Follow the link and you'll get 6 different filehosts to download from. Note that some of them contain ads, banners and popups.

Note that this is at your own risk. Your computer probably won't blow up, but don't blame me if something weird happens.

Link to the nexus if you're going to link anywhere thank you. It's still not safe but better I guess. In fact a general internet courtesy tip is to not link to sites you think might contain malware. Thank you.

I am getting white boxes (looks like artifacts) while using this dll fix. That is pretty troublesome. Anyone else?

Using a GTX 460 at stock gets the white box flickers using the dll fix. Using my GTX 460 stock or OC'ed to 875mhz no artifacts in any other game. This is making me worry that this dll fix is actually dangerous. I'm no guru, but its concerning.
Driver issue dude. Get the latest nvidia drivers to fix this, it is related to aa and hdr being enabled at the same time. It is absolutely unrelated to the .dll fix
totally appalling

it looks like this issue was definitely apparent during the beta phase, but nevertheless instead of releasing a quality product you release this.
but hey nobody is going to die from this, it is not like releasing a car that has defective brakes, oh wait that has been done before.

it is also nice to have a strong community here as you can see there are no developers giving two "shi*s" about this issue, you guys seriously need some PR skills.

quite amazing how the reviews of the game are very high on almost all PC review sites, but hey not everybody can own a supercomputer capable of predicting climate trends .... :brokencomputer:
Dont worry the people with supercomputers are suffering too. This has to be noticed during Q&A end of discussion. Every day the patch does not have is another very embarassing day for this company
I prefer these tweaks, because for me transparency multisampling doesn't work with the "fixed" dll, meaning bushes, trees, wires etc are all aliased.
I deleted this entire post because it is full [censored], transparancy multisampling doesn't work because you have an Ati card and used the nvidia version or vica versa. All of these fixes do little to nothing to adress the issue at the root and are more general performance fixes that might improve your framerate to the point that is balances out the npc issue
I swear I wasn't having this problem when I first started the game. I haven't been able to play since Tuesday, but now that I've reached Primm I'm seeing it. Maybe I just didn't notice it until I saw these posts.

I discovered that the toggleemotions command works, it just does not take effect immediately. If you save your game, open the console and type "toggleemotions" then load the game it takes effect and I see a huge improvement. However, the NPC emotions do not stay disabled between games, so when you quit the game, you have to do it over again when you come back. Is there any way to make the emotions stay off?
Thats where everyone first notices it, it's also the first spot besides the first big battle with that many npc's which is why you don't notice it untill you get there. Also toggle emotions improves but does not completely fix the issue.

This makes little to no sense, all of this data is loaded when you first enter a cell and should simply be noted as hard drive thrasing lag, defragging will help, there might be some .ini settings that improve it and it has nothing to do with the NPC framedrops.

The D3d file trick dosnt work for me at all. Causes my game to crash apon loading. it seems its only working for nvidia users. I run a ATI 5870. Im 100% its lagging cuz of npcs b/c when i was in prim and went into the casino while everyone was in there it was a nightmare when i faced them. After i completed the quest for there and everyone walked out the building i went back in and didn't have a problem with no one in it. Walk back outside near everyone and it was just crap till i turned around. I havnt seen much of a reply about this being fixed soon. Seems like "file corruption" is the thing they are working on atm. Even tho there are some "tricks" that ppl come up with to fix this, it dosnt work for everyone. So that shouldn't be a reason to let it slide for now. Hoping to see this fixed soon. Getting into fights with more then 4 npc is just a lag fest. I mean, i can play GTA 4 90% maxed out with a single card. This game should be a joke.
