That's basically exactly what my results have been since I posted that. I was excited to have found *anything* that improved the issue without, say, removing the heads of the NPCs (see post at the top of the page -- though obviously no one wants to play it that way it's still a good test), so I went ahead and posted it without testing every scenario. If I had I would have found that it improves the issue, but doesn't actually solve it.

Now that "emotions" are disabled, I can see much more clearly which things cause slowdowns, and it seems to me to be anytime the facial animations kick in (ie, when I engage a conversation with an NPC I can watch the FPS drop each time the NPC starts speaking, and rise back to 60 when they stop). I think it's fair to assume at this point that the problem is likely connected to the facial animation system, though I can't seem to find any other useful variables connected to it that actually have any impact.

I need to watch more closely, but I think NPCs often use various facial expressions in combat (ie, scowling while swinging weapons, etc), so in theory this could explain why it would impact combat so severely.

Well I shut down Microsoft security essentials to see if that would help with the micro stutter and it did. There is still a slight stutter there but the game is now playable for me.

Tried it and it didn't work

On the other hand, I turned off the head generation and the game ran at a constant 60 fps without no stutter at all! But i'm not gonna play the game with no heads...that's crazy!

Add me to the issue is well I don't know how you play with this issue it hurts my eyes sooooooo bad.

I am not much of a computer hardware guy my friend does it all for me but all I know is I can run Fallout 3 at 1080p ultra high settings with 4aa at a constent 60 fps practicly. It will drop down to 50 fps sometimes but rarely.

I am not even out of freaking good springs and I am running on the same settings I run Fallout 3 on and I am lucky to see 50 frames for a fraction of a second, its like choppy through & through. When I drop the resolution down it doesnt even really help if at all. I mean I was prepared & ready to get a new card anyway so was thinking about doing that and seeing if it will help. My friend told me if I got more ram I would not see any kind of change or difference, that 4 gigs is enough but I dunno for sure on that.

yup the issues i see are even starting in Goodsprings as well for me. Annoying.

Same problem as everyone else.

Running latest official drivers on everything. Anytime I interact with an NPC framerates take a nose dive. Problem seems to exist regardless of settings (high,med,low). Thought at first it might be an audio issue as framerates seemed to take a hit only when an NPC spoke. Followed the Doc around for a bit with FRAPs on, however, and found that any time he did anything other than just idle framerates would plummet.

If you are using a 360 controller you gotta turn it off in the Control settings before you can use Tilde to access the console.

i am not, its not pluged in.

I have a GTX 460 along with a six core cpu and 6gb of ram and the max fps I get on this (outdoors) is 30 fps and (oddly enough) it gets worse inside.

It seems not only do I have the 'npc on screen kicks my pc in the unmentionables' problem but talking to any npc that
does not initiate a branched conversation (just the generic npcs that roam the towns and what not) literally send my fps into
a nosedive while they speak.

Fallout 3 was not an issue for me. I was able to run it in my native res (1680 X 1050) on high settings with little to no fps
hits at all. I'm dreading getting anywhere near New Vegas at this rate...

Yeah, I tried that too, as the post at the top of page 9 suggests, and it completely solves the issue. There's no way the faces themselves are actually eating that much GPU time, which is why no one is seeing their GPUs go over ~30% use (whatever's wrong with the face animation system is hitting the CPU hard, not the GPU).

It's unfortunate because the game plays so smoothly without the NPC heads, literally never dropping under 60FPS on ultra high, but this "fix" really isn't a viable way to play the game. I honestly wish there were a variable to just disable facial animation entirely so I could at least play the game, albeit without any lip sync.

Just felt the need to reinforce this since there's still a lot of "try this, disable water, turn off AA" going around while I think we've clearly pinpointed the issue (how did this get past QA?!)

For the record, my "toggleEmotion" suggestion only helps until the NPCs start talking or go into combat, at which point they use specific face animations not covered by the "emotions" system and the slowdown returns in full force.

Hopefully this gets fixed soon, I was really hyped for this game and so far it's been a major disappointment. My FPS stays around 20-30 whenever I'm outside, even away from NPCS. Then when I go inside its a solid 60 without a hitch. And for the record, I have an ATI card so these problems aren't unique to Nvidia.

I get terrible lag whenever I run into a group of human npcs. I used the water settings tweak and that fixed many of my other frame-rate issues, but not the npc one. I really hope they patch this soon, the game is really unplayable in this state. I never had any problem running fallout 3.

Unfortunately, I have to say the same here as well. I can stand on top of the broken rollercoaster in Primm and overlook the wasteland on high/ultra settings at 50+ FPS. I run into the Bison Steve Hotel (Also in Primm) and encountered the bandits. When I did this, the framerate dropped to what felt under 10. It was all slow motion like - for want of a better phrase.

bump. game is extremely choppy when viewing wasteland / looking around / opening pip boy. Was able to max out fallout 3 and run smooth, launcher recommend same for NV. I've tried everything to fix it, lower settings, water fix, even updated my gtx 260's drivers which made the situation 10X worse!

When it comes to preordering games, you can always count on s**t like this to happen whether it be steam games where the 3 servers are all backed up so you get 5kb/sec for a 3 GB update or something as ridiculous as an engine error (that already has 13,0000+ views within 20 hours of the games launch) that shouldn't have made it out of the beta when they announced the pre-order back in June.

Considering it is the same engine / graphics as fo3 u would wonder why so many ppl are having this problem (and for me at least) fo3 is 100% not choppy at all when viewing wasteland / moving cursor / npc's etc...

I'm fine save for one bug - a random white flash (outdoors only) every 30 seconds or so. Its a very small patch on the screen - not too obtrusive. Other than that, no NPC lag or stuttering. I did a FRAPS run and it averaged 59 FPS and feels pretty much like Fallout 3 did as far as smoothness goes.
