I'm at the halfway mark in SoS, it's my favorite of the series so far. I hope I enjoy FfC. I particularly enjoyed Catelyn's chapters in SoS compared to the previous two books. The Red Wedding is very close. :(

Just watched this week's episode.
Spoiler
Wow they are really making out Joffrey to be super evil and sadistic. The beating of Sansa in the throne room was pretty spot on. Maybe it's my memory being bad but I don't remember that prostitue beating scene ever being talked about or mentioned, the writers must want everyone to hate Joffrey much more than any other character. As for the birthing scene, it was much more graphic than I imagined it. I mean the creators of the show really did not hold back at all.

Yea the [censored] scene with Joffrey wasn't in the books. But it was a good addition.

Didn't watch episode four yet, but I did like the pace of episode three and the focus on political intrigue. Also the fact that they didn't put in a two-minute scene of (for example) Dany just to have her in an episode was refreshing, hopefully the rest of the season sticks to this. :)

Nice OP there, OP.

Episode 4:

Spoiler

The shadow baby was well done in my opinion. I wondered if they would do a camera cutaway to avoid showing it - but what they came up with was really creepy. Harrenhall looked badass too.

A bit disappointed at Quarth. The dialogue at the gates was great but the city was just one CGI image. And I thought it would look more Asian inspired - not Mediterranean. Hopefully, they show more of it next episode. My memory is foggy but they seem to have shuffled around some of the characters there. The unnamed spice dealer was supposed to be Dany's suitor, not the Summer Isles Prince who is supposed to be in King's Landing

Very good episode though. The guy playing Bolton is ice cold and Stannis is very true to his character as well.

Just finished the Red Wedding chapter. The Starks are an unlucky bunch.

Mr. Martin stands by his claim that he "doesn't hate the Starks" but...

... I don't believe him. Not for one second do I believe him.

At this point, I'm just waiting for the hammer to fall on the remaining members, because I suspect that's what's going to happen by the time the series ends. I will honestly be surprised if the rest of Ned's kids stay alive by the end.

On the other hand, it's nice to see the Lannister's getting their fair share of death, torment, misery, and general unhappiness.

What I really, really want to see though? I want to see the Freys suffer for that [censored] Red Wedding.

I like how everything is just building up.

Khalissi (however you spell it) has [censored] dragons. That one girl just gave birth to a... demon thing. And it appears everyone has forgotten about the white-walkers. Meanwhile, everyone else is fighting over the throne.

I liked how they did the shadow baby in the show much more than the book. That was spine tingling how bizarre that scene was.

In the book, it's just described as a shadow and I kept picturing a little shadow on the wall and the floor which always struck me as wildly stupid and Peter Pan like. This disgusting demon shadow baby thing was AWESOME.

Trying to explain it to my dad, a non-reader, not so much. :D

Yea, I explained it to my mom. I told her how in the books it's implied that Melissandre and Stannis slept together. But in the show they actually show it, and I knew the shadow baby was going to be great. They showed it all, her squeezing it out. They did a great job showing it pry itself from her lady part.

The shadow baby thing was weird. After watching the episode, I looked it up on wikipedia out of curiosity to try and find a bit more about what it's supposed to be and accidently read a pretty big spoiler.... (I haven't read the books yet) :(

Yea, if you wanna read the books without spoiling future events or deaths, avoid wikis and book reviews.

Have you finished that book?
Spoiler
At the end of book 3 you should see Catelyn resurrected and began hunting the Freys. Although there are simply too many of them :P

I'm loving Carice van Houten's portrayal of Melisandre so far. One of the best casting choices, for sure.

Really liked how the fingerbones bit was introduced. It didn't feel forced like some of the other expository dialogue were (I'm thinking of how they introduced the Cleganes).

Not sure what to make of the Dany scene. I understand that they had to not show the dragons to save budget, but Dany really came across like she was bluffing. Even having a head poke out of the basket would have been fine for me. I also wish the Unsullied had their spiked helms.

Been awhile since I read the first book, but I'm pretty sure the Cleganes were introduced the same way, with Petyr Baelish telling Sansa how The Hound got his scars.

I don't think those are Unsullied, just city guard.

They couldn't be Unsullied, that'd be a disappointment. :P Qarth felt very fake-exotic, a mess of old cultures and silly accents. Hopefully they'll improve on that.

Yeah they are just city guards. The unsullied are from the city of Astapor.I thought Quarth looked pretty good from the glimpse they gave us.

I doubt they were unsullied too. I think there were unsullied at Illyo's mansion in season 1 and they had spiked hats.

***

I reread the Quarth entrance scene last night for anyone who's interested in how it played out in the books:

Spoiler

Dany and her followers found a deserted town in the desert and were recovering from their grueling walk through the red wastes. Dany sent out her three blood riders to scout the way ahead. All of them returned (in the show one is killed). The last one to return brings three people with him - Xaro of the 13 of Quarth, Prat Prye the warlock, and Quaithe of the Shadow who all ask to see her dragons. It's implied they're allowed to do so, as in the next scene Dany enters Quarth as part of a Roman-style triumphal march with the Quartheens throwing flower petals at her feet.

Also Xaro is described as a bald, languid, bejeweled Quartheen with milk white skin - so he got a bit of a makeover for HBO )

I'm wondering if they're dropping Quaithe and the Warlocks completely (I hope not) or inserting them later. Shall see next week.

I find it extremely unlikely they will.
Spoiler
Pyat Pree and the warlocks are the reason why she goes into the house of the undying. until the very end when she meets the agents sent by Illyrio all of her chapters were very dull talk with Xaro Xhoan Daxos and her trying to decide if she should marry him or not. The house of the undying chapter will be the highlight of the season for her basically so there is no way they can cut it.
