Google my bing, you yahoo.

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 12:43 pm

I know this is a bit random. Today, for the first time in years, I ended up on Yahoo! I even used its search function. I didn't really like it. Does anyone use search engines besides Google? What are they and why?

I use some deep net search engines for academic articles, but otherwise it's always Google.

Nah I only use Google. I think it must have been like 7-8 years ago I used any other search engines (norwegian ones etc). Google serves me well.

I use Bing all the time. I like the pictures on the Bing homepage and it looks a lot better to me.

Spoiler
Google seems pretty shady to me but that's something else entirely.

My only problem with Google is that it's highly dangerous to search for My Little Pony pictures.. :( And I suppose that's the case for most stuff when searching for images, even on nun-mode.

Only use Google these days. Bing seems like it's Microsoft trying to weaken Google. Google Groups, Google Code, Google Docs, Google Mail, and their flavor of the month services just give the company so much depth. I'll be damned if Microsoft takes that away from me.

I used Yahoo when Google didn't even exist.
Then I used Google almost exclusively for a long time.
The past year or two I've started using Bing about 50% of the time, because I dislike the direction Google is going in.

I prefer my search engines to feel more like search engines, not multi-media social web portals that aggressively push/market their other services on me. Bing isn't great either, but they (so far) annoy me a bit less, at the moment, than Google. At some point I figure I'm going to hate all the "search engines" and using them will become an occasionally necessary evil.

Ah yes. I still remember being forced by my Elementary School teachers to use Ask Jeeves instead of Google. They also demanded that we typed in all our inquiries in the form of a question, because the people on the other side wouldn't know what you were searching for if you didn't.

They tried to give me a detention for explaining how a search engine actually worked, with web spiders and whatnot.

I loved Jeeves. He was a brilliant mascot. Stupid, stupid!

I agree, to a degree. That's part of the reason for my asking.

I just googled MLP pictures to see what would happen. All the girly pink horselike stuff was somewhat disturbing, but I saw nothing that should dishearten a brony.

There are stuff out there alright! I usually don't search for just "My Little Pony" or anything, it's usually more concrete. Strange/sick/bad images are a very common sight on Google, trust me.

I remember those days...

MOAR ON TOPIC: there is an xkcd picture that i believes represents where google stands to the internet, but I cannot find it to save my life. somebody help me out?
I use google. Their algorithms are far more complex and produce more accurate results than any other search engine I have seen.

Yeah, I use a combo of https://duckduckgo.com/ and Google. I'd like to use DDG more than I currently tend to, but habits die hard . And sometimes I switch engines when I'm having trouble finding what I'm after.

Google, all day long. I'm not fussed if they want to rule the world. I just dislike Bing, and none of the others are really on par with Google.

Not to mention my email account is with Google, as are a lot of other things that they provide features for.
