Haven't got past character creator! They are so ugly!

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 10:56 pm

i don't have the game yet but i saw a char creation vid on youtube and it is possible to make a handsome male. you just need to spend some time adjusting and playing with the right sliders.

i think most atractive races are imperial and bretons. followed closely by nord
Sorry to disappoint you but it is not as detailed as the video would lead us to believe, atleast on the XB360 version. No skin tan darkening, No muscle tone setting like it was supposed to be. Just the basics which kinda pisses me off. I love the game but if your going to show us these great features and then BOOM they aren't there.....WTF!?!?!

This is very disappointing, honestly I prefered the Oblivion character creator! At least you didn't have to look like your 50 and homeless!!! Anyone having these worries or maybe some tips, I got this game at 11, been stuck for an hour, no hope in sight and I really don't want to be a female or a beast!

Yeah I havent been past the first town yet and Ive been playing since yesterday. I could quote the entire starting script though.

Where was it said that we could adjust muscle tone settings? Aside from being able to adjust the physique.

Dark blue is perfectly possible, have seen some red Argonians so I imagine orange-y flavors are in.

The Elves look like something out of Star Trek. Way over the top weird.

Bethesda needs to get new character design artists. Maybe CDPR will lend a few.

thank you, orange-y will work for my mage (did not expect even that  ) and dark blue is perfect for my bandit :turned:

as for the OP's problem, you cant make your characetr look clean/not rugged seems to be the general response (which they seem to think is just fine), my response to that is: why cant you make your character look anyway you want? that is one of the points of the game, and just because you live someplace "rugged" does not mean you have to fit in, you could take a bath every once and awhile.

Except there's nothing wrong with the way they look. Everybody always wants elves to look just like humans with pointed ears. I personally love the diversity between the races. As an artist, it's much more interesting to push things to the edge and exaggerate features and proportions. It tends to keep things from looking too generic.

*shocked*

That was the last thing I would have thought i'd see complained about...

...Which just goes to show we've just entered the Realm of Taste. It's one thing to claim XBOX 360 footage looks like maxed out PC footage and quite another to , let's say, express one's disatisfaction for the way the UI has been designed or say one doesn't like how Nords look. Having said that, from what I've seen (my pre-order has not been dispatched), I love the new character gen.

I find it humuorous whenever I spot someone - myself included - wanting others to like the things they like, dislike the things they themselves dislike, to the exact extent they like or dislike them.

I've made a few young characters, even 16-17 looking, you're just doing it wrong/thread.

Having the option to look rugged/unwashed/aged/ugly is fine. Having it forced is just poor design.

Elves look bad now. Too prune-y and too many rough edges (which, once more, would be fine if they were an option, but it's all they have available).

What are you seeing as "50-year old homeless person"? Have you tried toning down the dirt slider and playing with the complexions?

Show me another game that has this much freedom with regards to character generation without character models looking completely generic. It's not poor design as such things are purely subjective. As with all things, you can't please everyone all of the time, and in the case of these forums you can't please everyone most of the time.

Yes. Even with those sliders all the way down, many of the races still look post middle age. There just aren't enough actual options in the creator.

The first example to spring to mind is APB Reloaded. Originally released over a year ago, this mmo has a character creator in the same vein as Skyrim in that you pick a feature from a list then modify that feature with sliders. The difference is that the modifications offered are comprehensive and the base options are a great deal more varied. You can make old, rough looking characters as well as youthful, pretty characters and anywhere in between. There are plenty of other games out there with similarly all-encompassing models of character creation--given the current state of the industry, Skyrim's is most certainly poorly designed.

I don't understand all the face gen complaints. If you take your time and tweak settings a small bit at a time, come back and tweak some more ... rinse repeat ... You'll get a very satisfying result. Don't expect handsome and beautiful from coarse changes.

I come from experience in Second Life where I am an accomplished artist on adjustments to make great looking faces. Beauty never snaps into place — you have to develop your concept and fine tune it. Sure it does take time. But if you're impatient and can't wait to play Skyrim you are almost guaranteed to make an "ugly" or old looking character.

Sure I'll admit Second Life has many more sliders to style a face than Skyrim provides. Even so, I took my time to create a Nord girl. She does not look 40 or more years old. She is 20ish. Use scar and warpaint to your advantage and do not overdo it. Even with a dirty face my Nord is very attractive — I did apply dirt but only a little.

For the first time with a gamesas game, I am completely satisfied with the face gen provided and unlike all previous, I don't plan to mod for better faces/better bodies.

I don't understand why some folk feel compelled to make their character good-looking. What's wrong with ugly and brutish? Alot of cultures during history believed ugly and weathered and scarred was a better ''pull'' than flawless! :P

Oblivion was far from cartoony. Just because it was prettier and less sinister doesn't make it cartoony.

Haha, you're right. Oblivion was just crazy ugly.

Skyrim looks really good though. I actually like how everyone looks in the game. Better than the powdered models of other games.

Again, it's about having the option. No one is saying all characters should be young and pretty, just that without the option, the game is lacking something. Your ugly and brutish character looks just like all the other ugly, brutish characters out there. It's not a choice you made to play that kind of character, it's simply how the game is designed.
