Skyrim horses are made for running, they are made for climbing mountains. :)

Horses are faster for sure, I use them often. The only thing I hate about them is that they will rush into combat with enemies if anything hits them, it's kinda ridiculous.

One thing Horses are absolutely GREAT for in this game, that nobody has mentioned: Mountain climbing.

Horses can literally scale any mountain in the game that you normally could not on foot. (Some might take a little positioning and patience but it's possible even for the steepest slopes.) Go out and try it. It's come in handy for me SO many times, instead of walking all the way around mountains.

That has helped me out so many times. but still, I was playing Skyrim, then I went to Red Dead Redemption and forgot how fast horse are suppose to be and flew off a cliffside. Joy.

I don't agree with this. Why are horses in Skyrim better than Oblivion?

I used to ride my horse everywhere in Oblivion. I never ride my horse in Skyrim. Based on amount of play, they are opposite.

I have theopposite experience myself. The only reason I used horse in Oblivion was for immersion riding with Vilja. Their walk was slower than mine on foot. In Skyrim I can actually notice how much slower I am without a horse. Both needed some mods to make them useful though.

The only thing horses are good for is climbing mountains that I can't.

They're actually a bit faster but not by much. I have fiddled around the settings with a mod and found out that the base, unaltered stats are the following:

NPC Walk 80.10
NPC Run 370.0
NPC Sprint 500.0
Horse Walk 125.11
Horse Run 450.0
Horse Sprint 600.0

They may be a tiny bit faster than running (but only without the restoration perk Respite i might add), but that doesnt make up for your inability to defend yourself from basically any creature that can chase your horse down easily,
or for picking ingredients.

Nothing in the game can chase down a horse at full sprint. That's what you use sprint for if you're smart. I've never had anything catch me while I was riding.

Vanilla horses were pretty much useless. Im using "better horses" & "whistle" mods, raised horse speed up 60% and now they perfect. Riding across Skyrim only in seddle

Skyrim horses are made for running, they are made for climbing mountains.

The closest thing to backing them up is the "Y" button. It makes them rear up, and in doing so, they back up a little at a time. However, you MUST make sure your horse is standing still or it will jump. Frost has once decided to jump us off a cliff once. :(

Sorry, Quoted the wrong person. :(

Actually, using a horse is faster then running, though it doesn't feel like it.
Spoiler
If you have encountered the ghost of the headless rider you can see this pretty well. When you are running normally hw is faster then you because he is on a horse and you have to sprint to keep up. If you are on a horse yourself you do not have to use the sprint function.

As for horsecombat, I don't know.

Actually, when utilizing light armour, Become Ethereal, Beneficial perks, and Grand Healing coupled with the Stamina Regen perk I garnuntee I can out pace any horse in the game. (I do not garuntee however that I can spell whilst drinking beer...)

While you have Bethesda at your beck and call you couldn't ask them to send me fifty pounds could you?

I was going to call OP ignorant but then I looked at the date of the post, May 18th lol. Mounted combat is already here or is on the way for console players. And I agree horses aren't that fast but they aren't supposed to be because Skyrim's horses are bulkier, slower, but sturdier than horses in other provinces. Mounted combat is kind of a joke so far for me though. It's terrible in it's beta phase.

The horses are great compaired to oblivion, but there reallly no faster than running and why cant I engage in combat while on a horse cmon????????????

Try this. You know that bridge just out side of Whiterun by the waterfall. That is a part of a road that goes north that ends at a intersection. Run (don't stop) by starting at the bridge along the road to the intersection then back to the bridge whilst doing that time yourself. Try that with the horse without sprinting. See what difference there is. The horse will be faster.

They are faster than running especially when you make them gallop.

I have no issue with horse speed at all.

They're a lot faster than running. And don't complain if they're not. The horses in Red Dead Redemption were faster than the trains, even if the train had a 10 minute headstart.
