Actually, using a horse is faster then running, though it doesn't feel like it.
Spoiler
If you have encountered the ghost of the headless rider you can see this pretty well. When you are running normally hw is faster then you because he is on a horse and you have to sprint to keep up. If you are on a horse yourself you do not have to use the sprint function.

As for horsecombat, I don't know.

Yeah, Horses are basically useless in this game, although I do like riding them around still.
I hope the DLC will create some more use for them, like adding mounted combat shown in the Game Jam.

You can gallop at sprinting speed, and then make the horse run just a smidge faster. But they're not really meant for speed, they're study and good for riding from town to town while over cumbered if a player chooses not to have a follower.

They're definitely faster especially when sprinting. I can outrun the fastest animals in the game on a horse. Can't do that on foot.

Not really sure why some of you hate horses in this game so much. Only thing I don't like about them is how they want to fight. But for quick trips between towns or hauling junk when I'm overencumbered they are great. They also do a good job climbing up steep surfaces. They could certainly be better but they aren't as bad as some of you make them out to be.

Horses are about as fast as sprinting, and galloping on the horse (horse sprinting) is far faster than you could ever run...

As for combat, I'm sure Beth will add it when they can do it well. They took out severing (Limbs from Fallout) becuase they hated it and couldn't do it well. All these things will eventually make it in. They're just picking what to focus on sooner than later. Horse combat wasn't on that list.

Horses are faster for sure, I use them often. The only thing I hate about them is that they will rush into combat with enemies if anything hits them, it's kinda ridiculous.

One thing Horses are absolutely GREAT for in this game, that nobody has mentioned: Mountain climbing.

Horses can literally scale any mountain in the game that you normally could not on foot. (Some might take a little positioning and patience but it's possible even for the steepest slopes.) Go out and try it. It's come in handy for me SO many times, instead of walking all the way around mountains.

They need to be faster and stay out of the way while I'm fighting.

All I want is a stable feature. Not even a stable feature. Just let us tell them to wait somewhere like regular followers. Maybe go back to where you bought them?

I also wouldn't mind a whistle function.

But what's the use, the odds of Beth actually implementing something new for horses is slim.

I don't agree with this. Why are horses in Skyrim better than Oblivion?

I used to ride my horse everywhere in Oblivion. I never ride my horse in Skyrim. Based on amount of play, they are opposite.

Agreed. Also Oblivion had a bit of variety from the cheap paint horse to the expensive black horse. I enjoyed first person view while riding also. It still had flaws such as no combat on the horse. However, Skyrim does not really improve things much.

Yeah, they are slight faster but have bad stamina for the sprints.

Hmm, i felt that oblivion's horses were faster than skyrim's horses though. Maybe thats the problem. Anyway i've only used horses a few times, and it just feels incredibly slow.

Honestly, in Oblivion all my characters ran so fast it was ridiculous, horses actually SLOWED me down in that game. In Skyrim, they're actually faster at least.

This is pretty much what I was going to say. There's no better way to climb those crazy slopes than on horseback. I hate horses rushing into combat too. That's simply ridiculous.

Any PC user knows that horses are made obsolete simply because they have ridiculous control handling.

I really don't like the horses. Without mounted combat they seem pointless and the way they attack on their own is daft.

And does anyone know how to get rid of the bloody things? When I got Shadowmere, I left him there. But when I fast travel, he magically turns up. I don't want him. I want him to stay put somewhere. Otherwise he's getting fus roh dahd off a cliff.

^This First time I got on a horse and tried to back up (by pressing the s key) the horse decided what I meant was to turn around (I want it to back up not pull a 180). I know horses can back up in real life but aparently horse in skyrim are incapable of it. Also the fact that my horse attacks on sight is so freaking annoying.
