Horses are no faster than running!

Nothing in the game can chase down a horse at full sprint. That's what you use sprint for if you're smart. I've never had anything catch me while I was riding.
Yes, but you can sprint for a very limited time only. It happened to me too many times that I used sprint to ride away from a pack of wolves, only to run out of stamina and have a sabre cat make short work of my horse.

Here's the Respite perk trick however:With the Respite perk your healing spells also restore your stamina, so you can use close wounds/grand healing to fully restore your stamina in a few seconds, which in turn makes you able to sprint almost constantly.(~15 seconds of sprinting depending on your maximum stamina, then 2 seconds of charging up your healing spell).
It's about as fast as riding on horseback, but a lot more fun.

I'm very excited about this mounted combat business though, so I think only my arcane warrior character will remain a marathon running champion.
