How to play Caravan

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:52 pm

Yes, you make a fixed bet at the beginning of the game. Because Caravan is played outside of casinos, bets are made with caps, NCR money, and Legion coins. There is no raising once the game begins.

Sounds great, just wish you had regular poker though. Did you guys think of including it or was there a problem?

Poker is a sweet game but all in all it's just too complicated for video games like this in my opinion. Like in RDR I've known how to play poker for a while and even that game confused me.

Poker (especially Texas Hold 'Em) is both ubiquitous and surprisingly tricky to implement from an AI perspective. For the one mini-game we have where AI is important, I wanted to make a game that was specific to the Fallout world.

Thanks, it's cool to know Caravan. Kinda like laughing to yourself when you hear an inside joke you understand. I'm sure the post apocalypse world would have thought of something other then poker after a while. Wasn't Hold Em not even that popular in the the 50's anyway? Thanks for making even the card games undoubtedly Fallout. Must have been a fun game to work on.

Thx for the answer, hopefully I'll get a hold of this game. And creating a specific game for a fallout does make it feel all that more immersive :)

From Wikipedia:
Although little is known about the invention of Texas hold 'em, the Texas State Legislature officially recognizes Robstown, Texas, United States as the game's birthplace, dating the game to the early 1900s.[2]

After its invention and spread throughout Texas, hold 'em was introduced to Las Vegas in 1967 by a group of Texan gamblers and card players, including Crandell Addington, Roscoe Weiser, Doyle Brunson, and Amarillo Slim.[3] Addington said the first time he saw the game was in 1959. "They didn't call it Texas hold 'em at the time, they just called it hold 'em.… I thought then that if it were to catch on, it would become the game. Draw poker, you bet only twice; hold 'em, you bet four times. That meant you could play strategically. This was more of a thinking man's game."[4]

See I thought I remembered it more so kicking off in the 60's. :grad:

I wonder if each person you meet will have an individual max bet limit, or if it will be a standard limit with everyone? Or if it may be effected by a skill, attribute or perk? If I recall correctly, at least some of the casinos will have different table limits for blackjack and roulette? How would one find a "high stakes" Caravan game?

I think he actually looks like Howard Hughes, which makes sense since Mr. House IS inspired by HH.

The official rules says to grab a couple decks of cards. So everyone just uses their own deck, and builds a deck sort of like Magic? lol that sounds kind of funny...

I'm still disappointed that it isn't more like Magic(Tragic). I was hoping for a collector game instead of a poker variant. Oh well...

It isn't based on poker and you do need to collect cards and build your deck.

So I guess it's a bit like playing 3 hands of BlackJack at the same time, with 21 as the lower limit and 26 as the upper limit and a suit aspect.

We'll need some time to get used to the "special effects" of faces. ^_^
I guess Joker will be a rare card within the Mojave Wasteland...

Some questions remains:
- when a card is discarded, does it return to the deck ?
- when a caravan is disbanded, does it return to the deck and should we play another card the next turn (to have 3 caravans at any time) ?
- when a caravan is overburdened, is it still possible to play faces card ?
- is the first one to have 2 sold caravans the winner ?

1) No, the cards are out of play.
2) No, all cards in the caravan are out of play when the caravan is disbanded. On the next turn you may re-establish a caravan, though it is possible to win with only two caravans on your side of the table (though the third "track" would have to be between 21 and 26 for your opponent).
3) Yes, and it's very important because often you can bring a caravan back into range by playing a jack on one of your own cards.
4) All three "tracks" must have a winning caravan in them. This means that the caravan is a) between 21 and 26 (inclusive) b.) higher than the opposing caravan. If two caravans on the same track are tied, the game continues.

N.B.: It is entirely possible for you to lose a game of caravan by bringing one of your caravans into range on a track while your opponent has claim to the two other tracks. E.g.:

A/B/C
22 21 12 <-- your caravans
22 22 26 <-- your opponent's caravans

Let's say you play an 3 on your A caravan (current total 22), taking it to 25. A track has 25 (yours), B track has 22 (opponent) and C track has 26 (opponent). Congrats, you lose.

No problem, i'm a fair player

Thanks for the example, it's clear now.

One more for the road: is caravan cards the replacement for F3's bobbleheads ?

Well, noobs can't edit it seems ...
Edit: yes they can, but i'm just a noob ... :brokencomputer:

Another one: what happens in this case if there is no card left in the deck :
A / B / C
24 23 21 Player 1
22 23 25 Player 2

Does dead cards come back into play ?
